David Wright's interest in the TT goes back over fifty years to the era when the Italian machines of Gilera and MV Agusta dominated the races in the hands of riders like Geoff Duke, John Surtees and Carlo Ubbiali. A constant follower of Island racing ever since, he greatly admires the performances of today's TT-winning machines from Japan and the riders who have the courage and talent to race over the famous Mountain Course. David is the author of several books including Vincent - The Complete Story and 100 Years of the Isle of Man TT, both published by Crowood.

Preface
This book is mostly factual, but I have not done tedious historical research. I am a history teacher not a historian, and the one room school house needed to be described by someone who actually attended one. Events are not chronological, but roughly seasonal. The first chapters have a late summer setting. The last chapter happens in the spring. The years are from September 1947 through May 1951.
I have taken liberties in this book; a memoir fictionalized in many parts. It is a little allegorical and you will see the parallel to Adam and Eve in my last chapter Confligration. I hope that I have kept characterizations intact. This is a story of two contrasting families who were good neighbors in a rural setting near Fort Dodge, Iowa between 1947 and 1951. Coalville is a real town. Holliday Creek School was a real school. Jack Gorelle and Oren Gray were real people as were all the others I mention. Oren Gray is omniscient. He could see you from far away.
He is as old as the hills, or eternal.
Jack Gorelle does not have these qualities.
During the final phases of my writing, my brother-in law Max Koeper got a phone call from Catherine Ozment, whom he had known as Cathy (Catherine) Jones. In the book she is referred to as Kate. Incredibly, Catherine was trying to contact Fort Dodge people for a get-together. She asked Max if he knew anything of my whereabouts. Max said, As a matter of fact he is sitting about two feet away from me.
He handed me the phone. It was an astounding coincidence.
I met with Catherine, along with Ray Sharf, the husband of another Jones sister
named Joan. I was saddened to hear that Joan passed away in 2005 after battling cancer for many years. The Jones brothers, Jimmy and Dick, are both gone. Janette passed away in 2005. Catherine made many invaluable contributions to this book. Her memory is sharp and she helped me recall their father, Jim Jones, who was one of the most colorful, genuine people I ever met. Also, I recall the archetypal earth mother Maudie Jones. This book does not intend to judge, but to portray.
You will notice my habit of flipping from the first person in one chapter to the third person in the next. You will also notice that I have been deeply influenced by the poetry of Robert Frost. The chapter Drawing Water
is like his poem The Pasture
; Riding Willows
remembers Birches,
and I quote from his poem The Line Gang.
I was also inspired by Laura Ingalls Wilder, whose novels were read aloud at Holliday Creek School. I would read them to my daughters at bedtime. The title of one of those books, On the Banks of Plum Creek, gives rise to the title of this book, On the Banks of Holliday Creek. Also, I quote from two poems of Steven Vincent Benét: The Ballad of William Sycamore
and The Mountain Whippoorwill.
Also, I recall East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
My friend, fellow teacher, and football coach, David Archibald, wrote and published an account of his life with his family in Arizona. He challenged me to write of my own boyhood. I took him seriously and I began writing about a year ago. I thank Dave very much.

The Class of 1947
The bell rang and I said, Today is September 5, 2007. This is a new 11th Grade American History class and you all know I’m Dave Wright. Most of you know I have taught here at Academy With Community Partners since I retired from Coronado High in Scottsdale in 2001. I do not need the money but I need to teach. Michael Jordan needed to play basketball long after he had enough money. He still had something big to contribute to the game. I feel the same way, so I pledge to you that I will give you my best game every day. I hope you give me your own best game. I have had many of you in other classes and it is good to see you back. If this is your first trip with me, I say welcome. I am a teacher you will like and trust. Just ask around.
I glanced over in the corner at Kirk, age 18, who I had named ACP’s Student of the Block in the spring. He was an ex-gang banger who was back in school studying to become a police officer. He thrived on encouragement and ultra sweet coffee. He waved two fingers at me from behind his Styrofoam cup. He was my Enforcer. Next to him was Kelsie, who was set up for a drug deal and now was on probation. She was back. I had her in class last block. Kelsie would respond to a kind word, and she would confide in me. Next to them was Kevin, a Native American who belonged to a group of hoop dancers and musicians. They had toured Europe, but the trip was over, and he had nowhere to go, so he had come back to finish school. He was passionate about hoop dancing and we would talk about Europe. Over there was Ryan, who had a case pending for his role in a drive-by shooting. He was slick. Next to him Nick was sleeping, but soon he would be flying around the room because he was A.D.H.D. There were new students, and I had already memorized their names. I would get to know them soon. These were my lambs, and I smiled inwardly, remembering the lambs on my family’s farm long ago.
I continued. Right now, over at Sandra Day O’Connor School nearby, we have a kindergarten class getting started. How many kids are in that class?
I asked.
Nick sat up and rubbed his eyes. He had been listening all along. He sometimes would try to get off on a good start at the beginning of a Block. He answered. They probably have about twenty-five kids in that class, Mr. Wright.
He yawned and stretched.
Right, Nick.
I said. Take your hat off in class, please. How many of them will graduate from high school?
The kids looked at one another. Nick took his hat off, but he put his head back down.
Out of a beginning class of twenty-five kindergarteners starting school on September 5, 2007, how many will graduate from high school?
I asked, probing a little deeper, insisting on an answer.
Kirk smiled his half-smirk smile. Probably two or three of them won’t live that long.
He took a drink of coffee. I provide coffee and creamer in my class. Kirk gets to class early to get the coffee. He uses too much creamer and sugar. Today there was no jerky, but only apple slices.
What do you mean by that?" I asked.
