It’s really true what they say isn’t it, that time and tide stops for no man…
Despite the fact that the queen really wanted to walk and not swim or sail far out to sea, King Oscar could do nothing to satisfy her request, but it wasn’t for want of trying.
First he had tried the simple things, like ordering the sea to stop - he stood at the bottom of the cliffs near the palace wearing his finest royal robes, his biggest summer crown (he had 3 for every season of course - the summer versions had a built in sun visor) - and waved his arms about very majestically and commanded in his booming voice By order of the King of this great land, I royally order you to stop rolling in forthwith and immediately go back from whence you came!!
There was a round of applause from the faithful servants around him with those nearest to him saying things like, Oh splendidly done your Royal Highness!
,Magnificent!
,Only a king of such brilliance could say it so well!
and on and on like all people who were frightened to lose their heads if they upset the king.
They waited for a few minutes, but very soon it was clear nothing had happened and the king was stood ankle deep in splishy, splashy water..
Nobody wanted to admit the king’s orders hadn’t worked, so everyone stood around frightened to move, but it soon became clear when the king’s robe started to float off with the waves…
He stormed off in a great big mood - stamping his very soggy royal feet as he dripped his way back to the palace, surrounded by the loyal servants shouting, how dare it!
Then there was the time when he ordered his servants to go out to sea and dig a very deep and big hole in the sea bed - just like a plug hole in the bath
he had said, that’s bound to work
- off the people went in a huge ship, 50 men with shovels and a big drill.
Do you know what happened? Nothing, that’s what. They stayed there for 20 days digging, drilling, banging, swimming, taking turns to dive down and coming back up raising their thumbs like all
