Preface
Many times I’d wondered why other people, who weren’t any more clever or attractive than me—although to be honest some were—seemed to have all the luck. It just didn’t seem fair. I tried so hard and yet they didn’t seem to try at all. I consoled myself that my tough life experiences were—as I’d been told many times— ‘character building’, but I’d had enough of the struggles and wipe-outs…I wanted some of that so-called ‘luck’ for myself too.
There are only so may short ladders and long snakes that we can take in life and no matter how carefully I threw the dice the pattern of the game never changed; well, that’s not strictly true—the ladders sometimes looked different but they still didn’t actually lead me anywhere, and whenever I repeatedly slid down those snakes there was never a soft landing near the bottom of the board-game of my life.
Have you also ever wondered why some people seem to have a charmed life? Do they have better relationships than you? Earn much more money than you do? Do they have lots of genuine friends? Do you feel envious and wish you had the same? Well, if you stopped blocking yourself from attracting and receiving these things you would have them too!
I know that sounds harsh, and easy for me to say; and I’m certainly not blaming you for the life you have—although in some ways you are to blame, for allowing it to continue. There is no reason known to the Universe why you shouldn’t be equally as ‘fortunate’—the Universe has no vested interest in your success or failure—that’s up to you to create for yourself.
Of course we all start with a certain deal of the cards—maybe you were born into a family of toxic dysfunctional people; maybe illness and disease have been your regular burden. Maybe, just maybe, you were born into a family whose beliefs you have internalised ‘as if’ they were your own. Actually that last one is more than a ‘maybe’; it’s a certainty! You cannot help but be influenced by the people who brought you up, and the way in which they handled you, soothed you, tried their best to meet your needs, and guided you through infancy and childhood into young adulthood to become who you are now. They dealt the cards—most probably without even realising what they were doing, or that they had dealt you a poor hand. They would, no doubt, have been dealt a bum hand from an incomplete set of cards themselves in the past and so they thought you had it good by comparison, and that you had a much better deal than they had, and so you should ‘think yourself lucky’ for what you had. Whatever the reasons, you will have been trying to play the game of life with the wrong cards, without knowing why they were the wrong cards and wondering why, oh why, did other people win again and again when you were struggling to even keep playing.
Well the dealing of the cards wasn’t your fault—unless you believe in Karma and you having designed the circumstances of your current life to atone for past lives, and to create different experiences in your earthly form as a way of graduating through life-college and somehow enriching your ‘spirit’ with earthly struggles and delights. No-one alive has the absolute answer to that perplexing conundrum; but we do have a way of changing the hand of cards, or to use another analogy, the Script, from which you have been reading and rehearsing the performance that you repeat daily, called ‘Your Life’. That part of the equation is your responsibility—when you become aware that it exists of course. Then you can examine what exactly is in this Script and how you have come to believe it and play it out so convincingly—but always out of your own awareness—so that it has become ‘you’, and other people relate to you as if this ‘performance’ reflected who you really are.
If the way your life is going isn’t the way you want it to be going, then you must change your direction, by changing the Script that has been sneakily taking you down the wrong path so far.
I like acronyms—and I’ve devised one for SCRIPT—Sub-Conscious-Rules-Influencing-Present-Time…because that is what happens.
You must first become aware of your Script—your Sub-conscious core-belief system—which is running your life from the dark and shadowy wings of the stage, and expose what is contained within it. This also unveils and reveals the stage directions, costumes, lines and encores you have been diligently playing out to your audience every day. Sometimes different characters from your inner cast come onto the stage and take over for a while. Sometimes the curtain falls and you cannot perform at all until you find a way to stuff down your emerging authenticity and emotions—perhaps by using alcohol, drugs, sex, gossiping, shopping, excessively controlling your food intake, or any one of the many other ways to anaesthetise yourself enough for you to carry on with the only performance you know how to play out convincingly. Practice has indeed made imperfection perfect.
What you now need to know is that this Script can be changed. You can now ‘re-programme’ your sub-conscious core-belief system, and you too can have a better life—one of your own creation—and not be stuck with playing out the one handed to you by your parents, family, teachers, and other significant influences from your childhood who were too stupid and ignorant to know how they were shaping your beliefs about yourself and your future life. They shaped and moulded who you became at a time when your young brain was passively receptive to whatever the ‘big people’ said and did to you. That was back then…but this is now, and you have the power to finally break free from their influences and to start again with a fresh deal of the cards and a new Script—that you have dealt and written for yourself.
To be fair, there are some things you cannot ever change—so you might as well not even consider trying. These are such things as the natural disasters, gravity, ageing, endings, death, taxes, other people’s behaviours, and the general uncertainty of life itself. That’s the big stuff. However, at the other end of the scale there are things that you can certainly influence and change: for instance you cannot change the weather but you can decide to live in a warmer, dryer place.
No-one changes anything unless they first become aware of what the situation actually is, and of the choices they have, and how something can be changed; and of course that they can envisage the benefits of having made such a change for themselves. When you have become aware of the desired change, and it really matters to you, it becomes almost impossible not to go ahead and change it.
AWARENESS=CHOICES=CHANGES=DIFFERENT LIFE EXPERIENCES.
Most of the things that you have chosen for yourself so far might not have been chosen from your conscious awareness at all. Instead they may have been chosen by you from a place of ‘automatic association’—i.e. A=B, or, if I choose A I’ll get B which is familiar and so I’ll choose that rather than having to consider the other letters in the alphabet of life which I’m not familiar with.
When you know what drives your decisions and choices—whether those choices be about your lifestyle, parter, family relationships, career or anything else—then you have taken an important step towards ‘awareness’ of yourself. Awareness creates informed choice. You cannot actively choose anything if you simply leave it to chance, fate, destiny, the Universe or your Script to decide what is best for you.
If you really want to change the movie you’re starring in, then re-write the Script! This will attract a new cast of supporting characters around you who ensure that your new chosen drama has a better outcome for you.
If you have any compassion for yourself and the way in which the Script has been impeding your life and sabotaging your success, then you will feel compelled to make necessary changes to that Script—which, as you recall wasn’t even written by you but by the people who were around you when you grew up. Usual ‘strategies’ for change such as promoted by the life-coaching and cognitive-based therapies do not, and cannot, get to the root of the problem belief, attitude or behaviour. They may just give you another Script—again devised by someone else who purports to be the expert on you—with strategies and goals to help you achieve the weight loss, or the work-life balance, or for reducing a particular dysfunctional behaviour. If you don’t get down to the root causes of these problems, in your Script, then other dysfunctional behaviours will instead come to the surface to show the world your hidden pain.
Amit Goswami reminds us that "…in psychoanalytic theory it is assumed that people often repress the memory of a childhood trauma in their unconscious (sub-conscious). But since the subject is not aware of where her behaviour is coming from, she cannot do anything about it. and furthermore he adds
…conditioned movements of the mind that we call our habit patterns, comprise our ego-character. This character is a persona, a very self-orientated one; it’s a mask that hides our true self—our quantum self…you can heal yourself by… making what was previously unconscious conscious……quantum physics allows us to understand the distinction between what psychologists call the unconscious and conscious." (Amit Goswami PhD—2011)
To now quote Albert Schweitzer—The greatest discovery of any generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.
And finally Deepak Chopra who says quite succinctly Whether mainstream medicine, and its chief ally, big pharma, like it or not, the human body is controlled by the mind……when a thought activates a molecule in the brain, it is performing a quantum operation. A molecule (for example dopamine or serotonin) emerges from nothing, and the combination of millions of such molecules becomes the physical counterpart of thoughts, intentions, desires, wishes, hopes and dreams…the material world is subject to immaterial forces.
So that’s where QPP and this book come in. I have created a new form of therapy that works by identifying these unhelpful core beliefs and automatic associations; and it offers a simple and effective way of changing the Script. It is a new approach, or paradigm, in psycho-therapeutic help. I have combined my years of practice and accrued knowledge as a psychotherapist with my interest in energy medicine and energy psychology; added a dollop of kinesiology and some of my passionate interest in Quantum science ……and QPP now exists.
This book is for you if you want to find out about QPP and how it will help you to become a better person, partner/spouse, parent, sibling, colleague, neighbour, or any of the other life roles you play out each day.
We all share some things in common—the desire to be happier, to feel ‘at one’ and to live a peaceful life. In fact there are fundamental psychological needs that we all have as human beings:-
* To have a secure and stable attachment to someone significant and who knows us well, and on whom we can trust and depend.
* To be listened to and understood by someone who empathises with us.
* To have secure and clear boundaries which we are responsible for maintaining.
* To have a healthy positive sense of our own worth, value and purpose.
* To have a sense of hope and meaning, and to have our own beliefs and values accepted by others.
* To have influence over our own life and environment.
* To have an inner resilience to tolerate life’s inherent difficulties, and to be content and happy.
* To have our respect and positive regard for others reciprocated.
Your sub-conscious belief system—what I call your Script—can either enable you to meet these needs, or it can hinder you and sabotage your conscious efforts to attain them. If you have tried and failed to get these life-needs met, then it is very likely that your Script has been activated, and no amount of wishing it, talking about it, or asking or demanding that the Universe bring them to you will make one jot of difference. Your sub-conscious mind is literally directing the Script and running your life over 90% of the time. Scary stuff—and there you were thinking that you were in charge of your own life…well you are to a certain extent, but not from a place of awareness. Your Script isn’t bad—it’s just out-of-date and in need of updating and editing; because what you wanted and believed when you were a child is most probably not relevant to you now as an adult. Your Script can keep you stuck in your child-like programming and thereby squash your adult potential.
Most people are stuck in a life-drama that is fuelled by fear. Fear keeps them held in its grip and prevents them from seeing past the end of their nose. Fear prevents risk, change and growth. When we are fearful we shrink, and we become less than we could be. Fear does have some survival benefit but beyond that it gets in the way of
