Autumn was mercilessly stripping the yellow leaves, and the trees remained half-naked and lonely within the vortex of time. The wind was tirelessly playing with the branches, and they creaked ominously in the silence. A fine rain was falling, bringing the mingled odor of winter chill and a setting sun. The cry of an owl was adding a much oppressive note to the melody of this sad song, coming out of the bosom of the weeping forest . . .

Deep inside the realms of human souls, the Princess of Darkness wrung herself out. Since the dawn of mankind, her presence was expressed in the potential, which evoked evil. She lived hidden in the dark sides of human brain subconsciousness. She would often make an appearance in order to roam around the world in search for victims. She was called Angela, although she had many names and different faces. She easily settled down in the thoughts of people and caused fatal turns in their lives. She emanated austerity and fascination. She subjugated the simpletons to follow her till the end. In the sophisticated tangle of perfidy and malice, Angela managed to entwine anybody who kept hidden within his soul even a minimal particle of evil thought. She had no bright feelings, but she could steal the love from people’s hearts. She obtained strength from her insatiable cruelty. She was always successful with those who trusted her and had let the faith in good escape from them.

This season had its beauty and fascination. Avva took pleasure in walking in the forest and feasting her eyes on the golden autumn. She found those colorful pictures, drawn with sadness and joy, to be so splendid. Everything looked to her like a yellow fairy tale with a lot of sun and romance. What nature offered to her impressed her deeply, and that was how she felt in harmony with it. She wanted to take a rest, and that is why she was among the falling leaves. The wind was covering the ground ahead of her with a multicolored carpet, offering her a walk within the bared autumn forest.

Avva adjusted her long hair having the color of sunny autumn and set out along the narrow path, which was lithely winding among the large oak trees. Her thoughts engulfed her, and she imperceptibly became lost inside the forest charm. The sun disappeared from the tops of the tall pines, which majestically pierced the sky, arranged in neat rows along the sides of the wet, steep slopes. The light went out, and darkness absorbed the forest. Troubled and perplexed, Avva wandered around the autumn labyrinth. She was trying to find the way back, but it kept evading her. Suddenly she found herself alone in the darkness. She slowly slumped down by a tree and remained still. Her heart started to beat rhythmically, full of fear, and tears started falling down from her eyes. The rain poured down her face and mixed with them. She was wet all over and was shivering from fear. Autumn put on display its dark side—the one that was hidden behind its golden apparel.

At that moment, the forest behind Avva was unfolding its branches in order to make way for the Princess of Darkness. Angela was walking confidently in the darkness, and the leaves under her feet withered, turning into clammy mud. She sensed the fear inside Avva’s heart and headed right toward the large old oak. It had mysteriously spread its bared branches, disarranging them in a kind of complicated network, as if it were trying to entangle and suffocate the bright-shining moon. A dark cloud rendered assistance by passing in front of it, making it simply disappear from the sky. Angela slowly approached the crying girl and cold-bloodedly stared into her soul. Her black gaze passed through Avva and soaked into the damp soil. The heart of the girl was as pure as morning dew.

This woman is too good for me, thought Angela.

Somewhere from inside the forest, a clatter of hoofs was heard. Angela stood in the narrow passage and carefully studied Avva’s soul. At that moment, she felt the hurrying horseman pass right through her. She felt neither pain nor any touch. She turned her stare toward the man, who was already riding away, and pierced him with dark sparks, which darted from her evil eyes.

Daniel was late, and night caught him in the forest. While riding in a hurry toward his home, he felt a pang in his heart. He pulled the reins of the horse and slowed down the pace. He leaned on its mane and grabbed his breast. He remained in this position for a time, squirming and moaning with pain. The horse snorted out anxiously and stopped on the spot. Silence settled down ominously in the dark night. It was only Avva’s crying that disturbed the tranquility of darkness. Daniel heard the tender sobbing and made his way back along the path. The cloud uncovered the moon, and it shone upon the girl, who was crying by the old oak tree. He saw her and quickly approached her. He offered his hand, and she, trembling, grasped it. Daniel pulled her up and settled her on the horse. Avva held her breath inside his firm embrace. He spurred the horse on again, and they disappeared along the road. Angela looked at them indifferently and continued to scorch the leaves in the autumn forest.

Soon the forest was left far behind, and before Daniel’s eyes, the lights of the town where he lived sparkled. His house was the most brightly lit, situated picturesquely upon the green hill. Beside it, two large silver firs were shining, which the moonlight was tingeing with her tender caress. He lived in a huge house resembling an aristocratic palace. He was a wealthy man. He lived on his own with his servants and often rode through the forest to travel around the small settlements on business.

The panting stallion was already in front of the large wooden gate and was stamping the ground impatiently. The steward pulled the iron latch, and the gate opened with a resonant screech, which startled the dizzy Avva. She opened her eyes shyly and saw silhouettes of people, bustled about the horse. Then she glanced up and tried to recognize the man who was hugging her and was riding with her all that time. Something was evading her thoughts because, deep inside her soul, a disturbing anxiety from the stressful experience in the forest had settled in. She looked at the man behind her once again, and at that instant, the full moon lit up his face. Avva, for a moment, beheld the warm features of Daniel and felt serenity, which poured along her entire body. When Gerry led the stallion along the alley and went near the brightly illuminated house, Daniel made a sign to stop. He flung aside his black cloak and carefully dismounted from the horse. He offered his hand to Avva, and she slipped off clumsily beside him. He immediately shouted at the housekeeper, Hanna, help this lady because she’s hurt! Prepare a room for her and something warm to eat and drink!

Avva stood confused in front of the white stairs and shivered from cold. The lady, whom her companion addressed, immediately rushed forward with a colorful blanket, which she carefully swung over her shoulders. She hugged her and led her into the house. Before the eyes of the bewildered girl, a spacious hall was revealed, full of plenty of burning torches. At the bottom of the premise, a fireplace was burning with an astonishing beauty. By the fireplace, comfortable armchairs were arranged, and a table abundant in fruit and flowers.

Make yourself comfortable, dear young lady! said the woman, who took care of her.

Before taking a seat, Avva turned her glance toward the entrance to see if her savior would follow her.

Do not worry, Mr. Daniel will be in a minute, continued she, after sensing that Avva was looking for her master.

Avva sank in the soft armchair and started gazing at the playful little flames. Meanwhile, Hanna, who had been housekeeping for Daniel for long years, started making warm tea for his visitor. She took the cup and served it to Avva.

Here you are, young lady. The tea will warm you up, and I think you will feel better, she said with concern.

Thank you, madam! Avva said in response.

She started to sip the fragrant tea and warm her palms with the cup. Her hair had started to dry and mingled with the bright beams springing out of the fireplace. Her eyes sparkled in unison with the fire, warm and splendid, full of curiosity and expectation. Hanna was constantly occupied and did not keep much company to the visitor. It was rather cozy by the fireside, and Avva was carried away in her thoughts. Only the crack of the twigs and the sound of a fire burning were heard. Suddenly the door opened. The wind gushed fiercely in, spreading out a heap of autumn leaves inside the warm room. Avva turned around and looked at the entrance, startled by the noise. Daniel was already there, trying to force the door to close, struggling with the cold whirlwind. He walked slowly toward her, untying the straps of his cloak. Hanna saw him and rushed to meet him. She took off his garment and followed him.

How’s the young lady? asked he.

She’s fine. Keeps looking for you with her glance all the time and is expecting you by the fireplace.

Daniel was pacing through the hall, and the heels of his shoes echoed rhythmically in the fiery silence. Avva kept watching him, how he was filling the house with essence and was so agitated, as it was her first date. He was concerned about her and wanted to be sure that she was fine. At the moment he came close to her, he looked at her anxiously and asked, How do you feel? You aren’t scared anymore, right? I am Daniel. He presented himself.

Avva was looking at him dumbfounded and only nodded.

What were you doing all alone in the forest and that in such dark a night? asked Daniel.

    I got lost, she uttered.

Where I found you, something happened. He kept stepping on one foot to the other. I felt a pang in my chest, so I made a stop. You had been lucky that I heard your cry. He looked at her sternly. Now I am also fine, continued he with his explanations, taking a red apple, which he brought to his lips and took a hungry bite. I really had the feeling that as if someone had stabbed a knife in my back, he spoke with his mouth full.

After a short silence and pacing around the table, Daniel sat into one of the armchairs and stared at the fire. He was seriously thinking about the event in the forest. He undid his shirt and took a hold of the heart region of his chest. The light from the fire tinged him in a bright red hue, and he looked rather warm and attractive. His black curls were glistening and falling down his strong shoulders. His legs were stalwart and muscular, which strongly impressed Avva. His open shirt revealed relief-formed breasts, which emanated strength and power. At the moment he turned his eyes to her, she felt an uneasy embarrassment and immediately bent down her head, looking at the floor. He decided that his guest was still feeling scared and asked her, What’s going on, are you still scared? Do not be afraid of me! Whatever you may wish, just let me know.

Avva remained silent, as if she were struck dumb. Daniel’s presence disconcerted her, and she kept shifting the cup of tea in her hands. He had made her feel different, and that new sensation was confusing her. At this instance, the cup slipped off her trembling hands and shattered into countless pieces, the tea splashing on the entire floor. She immediately threw herself on the ground to collect the broken glass splinters. She approached this task rather awkwardly and cut herself. Daniel promptly bent down toward her and caught her bleeding hands. He squeezed them in his warm palms and yelled to the servant, Hanna, come quick! Hurry, help our guest, as she’s got cut!

What has happened? asked the startled Hanna, putting her hands on her head.

Bring clean towels and warm water! ordered Daniel.

She rushed to bring what he had ordered her. Avva did not feel any pain despite the cuts. Daniel’s palms were warming her up in such a way that the blood flowing down had no significance. She kept silent again and was secretly scrutinizing him. She could feel his genuine concern. There was nothing else in her thoughts but a feeling of warmth and security. Hanna brought some water and sterile white towels. Avva dipped her bleeding palms in the deep bowl full of lukewarm water, which turned red. The she slowly pulled them out, and Daniel wound the towels around them.

Does it hurt? he asked her.

No was her brief and clear reply.

She was getting more courageous and was looking at him without embarrassment. Just then, he reached to her face. He touched her lips with his thumb, wiping off a streak of blood. Out of fear or something unexplainable, Avva had bitten her lips.

But what’s up with you? You’re not right at all. Would you like to go to bed? Would you like something? He was pouring on a pile of questions, heaving a deep sigh. What’s your name? He was silent for a while. Would you please tell me?

Avva, she answered and looked at him with her deep brown eyes. A light smile was outlined on her face.

This is wonderful. He smiled in his turn inscrutably.

    What? She was momentarily serious.

You are wonderful. I am glad we met each other. Let’s hope we have enough time to get to know each other and to talk. He lingered his gaze into her eyes.

Thank you for taking me out of the dark forest, she said, bending her head down in bewilderment.

Daniel took a scrutinizing look at her. Now, he seemed to see her from a different aspect. The flame was lighting her face. She radiated an indescribable charm and deep sensuality. Avva was a very beautiful woman, emanating mysterious tenderness and strange childish innocence. She was molded out of eager feelings, ready to burst off at the slightest stroke. Her eyelids fluttered slightly, and their eyes met again. Just at that moment, Hanna’s voice came from a distance.

    Come to dinner, please!

Her master nodded approvingly and invited his guest, Avva, let’s have dinner together! Then you will tell me where you live. You will sleep here, and tomorrow you will go home. He thought for a moment and went on. But only if you wish, he said in a soft and confident tone.

She stood up from the comfortable armchair and followed Daniel, who was still holding her toweled hands. This way, they both found themselves in the dining room. Before them, temptingly, a table was revealed, abundant in tasty dishes and beverages. She pulled the chair and sat down. Daniel had to make several paces to reach the opposite side of the long table. All the time, while he was walking, Avva kept observing him carefully. His supple body started to excite her, and his gait looked straight-out stunning. It emanated virility and potency. He abruptly pulled his chair and sat down. Hanna promptly started serving them. She first served the guest, then her master as well.

Cheers! said Daniel and raised his glass of red wine.

He took a long pull and started eating. Avva also took a sip; after, she unwound her hands from the towels and greedily approached her meal. She was very hungry. While she was having her meal, she kept throwing a cursory glance at Daniel. He was also very hungry and tasted the different dishes with great pleasure.

This chicken is gorgeous! Did you try it? asked he.

    Yes, it’s magnificent, she replied.

They kept silent and devoured everything with great appetite. Daniel was approaching his food in a ferocious kind of way.

The dessert is also very delicious, he noted with a smile.

Oh, yes, it is exquisite, the insatiable guest continued to praise the dinner.

Having finished his dinner, Daniel came up to the pleased Avva and took her wounded hands.

Thank you for sharing the dinner with me! It was a real pleasure to have dinner together with you.

I also thank you. The pleasure was all mine, she replied.

They both went back to the fireplace. The tension had already been ignored, even killed, and between them settled calmness and the pleasure of being together. Avva relaxed and started to speak more openly with the man who had deeply impressed her. She could feel that his presence was making her happy. She had never before felt that way. This evening was special to her, as if it were a gift from heaven. She felt it that way because she felt an incredible ease. She had the feeling that she was floating up like a feather—floating around the warm room carefree, painless, griefless. What had happened to her was an incredible experience, which she wanted to retain forever.

You will stay and sleep here, right? he asked her.

Yes, of course. It’s dark outside, and there is no way for me to get back home. I live near the forest. I am on my own, and there is nobody to be worrying about me, she assured him.

Daniel was quite puzzled by the confession made. He pondered and decided to ask, How come? Do you live all alone?

Yes, but I have my pet—Stephanie, a beautiful white pussycat who can take care of herself.

"Oh, I’m glad you have a cat. I love animals. I have lots of horses. They are
