About this ebook

You may want to know what this book is about. It isnt about the end of the world. Rather, it is an open portal to what the Bible says is an inevitable future when God reconciles His creation to Himself. Part of that reconciliation will be when He steps into time and space and says, Times up, now the judgment.

The Arm of the Lord is a Hebrew idiom for the power of Yahweh (????), excerpted from Isaiah 53:1. It isnt coincidental that the magnificent 53rd chapter of Isaiah, the Suffering Servant, starts with this preamble. The power of God examined in this story is Gods power to redeem fallen mankind without compromising His righteousness.

The Arm of the Lord - G. Terrell Cotter

    Book I,

The First Half of the Tribulation

    1

    The Providence of God

The providence of God (His works within creation to manage all things according to the immutable counsel of His own will³) is as sure as the sun coming up tomorrow. El Shaddai (God Almighty) who is holy (cut from sin), and righteous (consistent with His divine nature), dwells in glory (the manifestation of His intrinsic awesomeness). There is coming an interval, known as the Day of the Lord. In that day, God will intercede in time and space to judge sin and reconcile all things to His righteousness.

    Jerusalem, Sometime in the Future

Dark storm clouds obscured the sky, adding to the foreboding aura. Black, slimy, vicious demons darted in and out of the vaporous overcast. The maddened hoard’s advance towards Jerusalem appeared as angry waves, a sea of humanity shouting and cursing, as Jeremiah rode towards the Temple Mount. He could almost feel the rage and virulent hate. In front of the opposition, mounted on a white stallion prancing back and forth, was the dragon of old. Satan himself was leading his forces against the Righteous One in the Holy City.

Jeremiah dismounted his horse, hesitating for a moment to remove his sword from its sheath. He stood transfixed, gazing at the weapon he had not held for a thousand years, but then refocused on the situation at hand. He hurried toward his assigned position on the East Wall of the Temple Mount, directly above the Golden Gate. Upon reaching his position, he gazed at the surreal scene before him. As far as the eye could see there were hordes of humanity, mobilized for an attack on the City of Peace.

At first, Jeremiah hardly noticed that David had taken his place beside him. Without even looking over he asked David Did you bring your sling?

I brought a bow and arrows, David answered soberly.

Jeremiah frowned, looking down at the smaller man I knew that story about you killing a giant with a rock was a bunch of bull!

David instantly reacted It was not__ Then noticing the calm smile on Jeremiah’s face he laughed and laughed uproariously. The men around them on the wall, and even the faithful angels standing ready, didn’t know what David was laughing about. Nevertheless, they were strengthened thinking he was laughing at the opposition, taunting anyone who would come against the God of Israel.

David looked quizzically at his old friend How in the world did it ever come to this?

Jeremiah’s mind drifted back a thousand years when he was just an unknown writer living peacefully with his dog in Alaska. He had every intention of living out his life as unnoticed and uninvolved as possible. However, that was before God called him, and before he fell in love with her. Jeremiah had, in fact, experienced much of how it had come to this. There were times of tribulation intermingled with endearing love. Jeremiah and his beloved had been just two of many caught up in the cosmic struggle between light and darkness.

IN THE BEGINNING was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him, nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.⁴ What became manifest was Life and Light—the Life-Light of men.

Darkness, on the other hand, comes in many forms. Darkness is often disguised in pale obscure shadows. Darkness can be as black as a thousand midnights in a cypress swamp. Sometimes it even pretends to be the light. When the radiance of God’s righteous light shined in the darkness, the darkness could neither comprehend it nor contain it. Within the darkness, people imagined and often practiced the illusion that they were masters of their spiritual destinies apart from God. When the Life-Light illuminated the darkness, it was like they were all being carried along on some benevolent-providential river flowing inevitably toward His predetermined purpose. The Life-Light is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end of God’s divine providence being revealed before mankind’s eyes.

God created living beings with free will, both angelic and human. At some unknown time in the eternal past, one-third of the angels followed Satan in rebellion. After the serpent tempted Eve, Adam and Eve also rebelled against God.

In God’s Divine Providence and foreknowledge, He directs events toward ultimately accomplishing His righteous Kingdom. God promised that through Eve’s seed the Anointed One would come—Messiah. Through the Anointed One God would redeem not only mankind but all of creation.⁵ Generations later Abram received the promises of a nation, a land, and a blessing.⁶ Moses was given the Law and the sacrificial system.⁷ David was given the promise of an eternal Kingdom to be ruled by the Anointed One.⁸

The Life-Light became flesh to put in plain words God’s redemption plan. When the time was full Yeshua Ha-Mashiach (Jesus, who is the Anointed One) was born. He is the fulfillment of all of God’s promises. He came to explain the Kingdom and then give His life as the sacrificial Lamb of God, paying for the sins of the world. For two thousand years the body of Christ (the church) was being completed while at the same time evil was increasing. Then God said, Times up, now the judicial judgment of sin and the final redemption of creation.

    Wilderness Near Jerusalem, 40 AD

From before recorded history until this very time, God’s adversary Satan has attempted to counterfeit God’s work. God’s creation was good, created in righteousness. Satan’s imitation is evil created in sin. One might think old Beelzebub is red with horns and a forked tail. Nothing could be further from the fact. Satan was created an angel of light.⁹ He was the Anointed Cherub, who covers on the holy mountain of God¹⁰ until unrighteousness was found in him. He led one-third of the angels in rebellion against God, and he tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. He might better be described as a beautiful deceiver with a black heart. The spiritual battle between righteousness and wickedness is ongoing every moment of every day.

YITZCHAK BEN BAHIR was holed up in a wilderness cave east of Jerusalem for ten days in prayer, meditation, and fasting. He was a scholarly man, a leading member of the Sanhedrin (Jewish religious leaders). Even so, dramatic events of the last few years drove him to seek a deeper meaning, to understand the relationship between the infinite eternal Creator and His finite mortal creation. There was the unrest caused by the Rabbi from Galilee. He spoke of God and the Kingdom with authority and even claimed to be the Son of God. Yitzchak was bone weary and weak with hungry, living on only water. His head bowed in meditation, the musky smell of the cave stagnating in his nostrils.

    YITZCHAK ben BAHIR!

Who was calling? Yitzchak’s mind seemed to be playing tricks on him. No one knows where I have gone to pray? It could be a Bedouin sheep herder, but how would a stranger know my name?

The strong voice repeated, Yitzchak ben Bahir. I called to you!

Yitzchak responded hesitantly Who is it? He gazed into the depths of the cave to observe a glow that turned into a beautiful blue hue.

A voice beckoned from out of the light which shimmered when it spoke. "You will know me as Sappir (sapphire) for my name is Sefirah, an Archangel. I will teach you the secrets of Kabbalah, and you will serve me."

Yitzchak fell on his face in fear and answered with a trembling voice Lord, y-your servant is here.

Yitzchak was mystified. Sappir’s voice was as pleasing as the shimmering light was magnificent. Yitzchak peered further into the blue hue, and he observed the image of a beautiful angel with six wings. The angel appeared to be covered with precious stones: the ruby, topaz, diamond, beryl, onyx, jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and emerald, all set in gold. He was, in fact, the Anointed Cherub whose vanity was lifted up because of his beauty.¹¹

Yitzchak, still prostrate on the cave floor spoke to the angel of light Lord, what secrets?

The voice from out of the light instructed "It is the receiving of the mystical secrets of the Tanakh (Torah, traditional Hebrew text). Only the chosen ones can receive the light. Few can attain spiritual enlightenment. The others are like chaff in the wind, like sheep in need of a shepherd. The secrets of enlightenment have been lost for many years, now you and your disciples will restore them."

Jerusalem has been greatly troubled by the Rabbi from Galilee Yitzchak pleaded. He claimed to be the Son of God. His disciples claimed he was resurrected on the third day. All of Judea is in a stir.

The radiant object animated to fill the cave. Don’t speak to me of the Rabbi from Galilee! I offered to share my Kingdom, but He would have none of it, so I denounced Him. His disciples will lead many Jews away from Moses and the Law. Yeshua (Jesus) didn’t die. He fainted after being wounded. Pontius Pilate secretly moved Him to the port of Joppa. He traveled under Roman guard by ship to Spain. Yeshua died a rejected shepherd with no sheep. His disciples will scatter His contaminated seed from the Jews to infect the Gentiles. Let them have Him. Satan looked to see if Yitzchak was buying the lie. Much to his satisfaction Yitzchak seemed to be taking it all in, hook, line, and sinker.

The voice commanded "Come near the light. I will put my words in your heart. You will be the keeper of the mystical secrets of the Tanaka. To impart the message after you are gathered to your ancestors you will have six High Priests. They will keep the secrets of Kabbalah and serve me. The secrets are not for every son of Abraham. Share only with those who have ears to hear.

"These are the ways to the secret things. God is neither matter nor spirit. He is both. God is a stern judge of all people to be feared in submission. God is Ein Sof (ףוס ןיא: impersonal, eternal, and infinite; that which has no limits). All things are part of god. Therefore, you are a god. There are four worlds: Azilut, Yitzirah, Beriyah, and Asiyah. There are ten sefirot contained in each of the four worlds, which contain ten serfirot repeated to infinity. God is as if he were two columns of stone. On the right is the column of Compassion, the presence of god blessing those who are worthy. On the left is the column of Overpowering, the absence of god hiding all things. You shall show compassion to those of Kabbalah. To those who are not enlightened you shall despise as god despises them. You must show compassion to yourself also for you are a god. You shall serve me for I am the Lord of Kabbalah."

YITZCHAK FELL INTO a deep sleep. When he awoke he hastened to his home in Jerusalem. Even before taking food he inscribed on parchment what the voice out of the shimmering light had told him. Then though it was late at night, he went to the Temple to seek out Simon ben Gohen, the Chief Rabbi at the time. Not wanting anyone else to know about his encounter with the angel of light, the two men walked to the east side to the Temple Mount. A cool evening breeze drifted across the holy mount as the two men stood together.

Yitzchak told Rabbi ben Gohen all that had happened but when he started to relate the new commandments, the Rabbi interrupted him immediately. This is blasphemy. You have been deceived!

Yitzchak could not believe how the chief Rabbi was so intransigent, quickly rejecting the revelation. Then he remembered that the voice had told him to share with those who would have ears to hear. Vain indignation welled up inside him. He felt a white-hot anger unlike any he had known before. He pushed Rabbi ben Gohen as hard as he could. Not realizing what he did, Rabbi ben Gohen lay dead, brought to ruin on the stones at the foot of the east wall.

Yitzchak, overcome with fear, was trembling. He ran from the temple area, across the Kidron Valley and sought refuge in the olive garden. He was aghast, paralyzed with anxiety. He heard the congenial voice that had come out of the shimmering blue hue. You have done well my son. He was not chosen to receive the light.

    Milan, Italy 2001

Father Joseph Carapelli had just finished his senior level Latin class. As usual, he was spending a few minutes interacting with some of his boys. Father Carapelli was a caring man, one of those rare scholars who took making disciples seriously pouring his life into the fertile minds and souls of his students. As a young priest he was on the fast track up through the ranks of the Catholic hierarchy. He had an extraordinary mind, especially gifted in languages. Nevertheless, he turned down a strategic promotion at Rome in order to return to teaching. He was an authority in ancient Greek and Hebrew, also having considerable accomplishments as an amateur archeologist, particularly in Italy and Israel.

DURING HIS YOUNGER years Father Carapelli often spent his vacation at archeological digs in Israel or Italy. There was an enigmatic Rabbi, who took Father Carapelli into his confidence. The Rabbi was grounded in the secrets of ancient Jewish mysticism. His name was Aasif Keter. Father Carapelli had responded to a request for a private meeting, the reason for which he had no idea. The meeting was to take place at Yeshiva Torah University in Jerusalem where Rabbi Keter was a teacher of the Law. Father Carapelli arrived early as was his custom.

Like any endeavor in life, who one knew was often a short cut to accomplishing one’s goal. The Rabbi had the social and governmental connections to be an influential friend. Rabbi Keter obtained semicha (ordination) advancing to Yadin Yadin (he shall judge) qualification. Even so, it seemed unlikely the priest would have taken time away from a dig near present day Zepat. However, the possibility of gaining insight into Jewish mysticism was too tempting to pass-up.

The university office building as were all the buildings in Jerusalem was white limestone. The interior was rather common for a university, well-kept but sterile. The Priest made his way to the second floor, down a long hallway to Rabbi Keter’s office. Father Carapelli rapped gently on the large wooden door.

Father Carapelli, thank you for coming the Rabbi welcomed graciously. Please have a seat. Father Carapelli sat in an oversize brown leather chair. Would you like some coffee?

Yes thank you the Priest replied with equal graciousness. Do you mind if I look around at your artifacts?

Not at all Father, make yourself at home the Rabbi said as he walked into a side room. It will only take a minute to make a fresh pot of coffee.

Father Carapelli casually looked around the office. In a display case were several ancient parchment scrolls. There was also a collection of yads (pointers used to point at the text as it is being read) along with other interesting artifacts. The Rabbi brought a tray with two cups of coffee along with sugar cubes and cream. Father Carapelli added two sugar cubes.

Rabbi Keter I must confess I have attended one of your lectures and read many of your articles. It is a privilege to meet you.

You are too kind and please call me Aasif.

Thank you and please call me Joseph.

There was a break in the conversation while the Rabbi stirred cream in his coffee. The Rabbi looked up I have asked to speak with you Joseph because of our shared interest in ancient Jewish history but there is more.

    Yes Aasif, what is that?

"Joseph I believe you are among the receiving."

Father Carapelli looked quizzically at his new friend That terminology is unfamiliar to me.

Joseph much of what I want to share will be unfamiliar to you.

Good I love a mystery Joseph replied. Please go on.

I am Jewish you are Catholic, but this is neither Aasif began. "This transcends religion, as you know it. This defines the inner meaning of the Tanakh" (Hebrew Bible).

Now Aasif had Joseph’s full attention. Yes go on.

The Rabbi hesitated for a moment Are you familiar with the Zohar?

I have heard of it in passing Joseph answered, but frankly, there is very little reliable information available. That is one of the reasons I am working like a common laborer at Zepat.

Yes I can imagine. The teachings of the Zohar are for the spiritually enlightened only. The Rabbi hesitated again Joseph, certain things have been revealed to me, things concerning you.

Father Carapelli respected Rabbi Keter for his scholarship, but this conversation made no sense to him. Aasif I’m afraid you have lost me. How could there be ‘things about me?’

Rabbi Keter took another sip of coffee. Perhaps a little contextual information then we will see if your question needs an explanation. The Rabbi hesitated for a long moment. There is I might call it a discipline explaining the ultimate meaning of the relationship between the Creator and His creation. There was an exclusive teaching handed down in oral tradition from the Patriarchs. These revelations were misused by the unenlightened. Therefore, the true meaning of this enlightened knowledge has been held secret for three and a half millennia. It has been passed down through a chosen line of the rabbinical priesthood. Rabbi Keter went on to explain in detail this higher knowledge. The Rabbi looked to see how Father Carapelli was receiving the information. Perhaps I have been presumptuous Aasif said skeptically.

However, Father Carapelli was not doubtful. He was awestruck. No it makes perfect sense. The unenlightened never seem to grasp the most progressive revelations of God. God’s ultimate revelation of Himself is His Son, and I believe the Son will return to rule the world.

Joseph, Aasif clarified, I believe you are one of the chosen to prepare the way for the Anointed One.

ON RETURNING TO Rome Father Carapelli disclosed the encounter to one of the respected theologians at the Vatican. However, he was rebuffed and forbidden to continue his investigation of this dissentient theology. Unfortunately, that prohibition only served to stoke the fires of curiosity and subsequently devotion.

Through his combined study of Roman history and Jewish mysticism, he had developed a theology perverting the Catholic Church’s position on amillennialism. He came to believe that in God’s Divine Providence, there would be one who would reconstitute the Roman Empire. That person would rule not only the Mediterranean but the entire world. Father Carapelli believed the institutional structure would be Roman, but the spiritual source would be a Jewish mystical religion known as Kabbalah.

AFTER A LONG and productive career shaping young minds under his tutelage Father Carapelli had contemplated retirement. One of his students caused him to postpone those plans. He invested the last three years in David. David possessed a brilliant mind but came from a broken home with an abusive alcoholic father and consequently, overly protective Italian mother. David had been receptive to a compassionate father figure whom Joseph Carapelli had become. Even so, there was yet one aspiration to accomplish in Father Carapelli’s calling. He needed to know if David was the one to which Rabbi Keter had referred.

The other boys respected David as a natural peacemaker, resolving disputes by wisdom rather than conflict. Should that fail David could resolve the issue by the sheer dynamic force of his personality. He excelled in sports but even more in debating. Father Carapelli observed that David had the extraordinary ability to use few words, wait until the strategic moment and then sum up the argument to his advantage in one conclusive, emphatic, victorious imperative. David had indicated an interest in the priesthood, but the Jesuit priest had guided him towards law and sociology.

Father Carapelli was in his study working when there was a knock on the door. Come in. David opened the door and stepped inside. Oh David, I had forgotten I asked to see you.

Yes Father, what did you want to see me about?

Please be seated over by the coffee table. May I get you something to drink?

    No thank you David replied.

David, I want to share something with you, just an introduction to something I uncovered years ago. Then we will see if you are interested in further studies. On the other hand, this may not be your cup of tea.

Father Carapelli removed a folder from his desk drawer which contained some weathered hand-written notes from years earlier. The two had a wholesome interchange for about thirty minutes. Father Carapelli explained the basics of an ancient Jewish mystical religion. David listened intently as he always did. He thought it interesting but no more so than any other religious practice. Most disappointing for Father Carapelli was that David seemed to be insensitive to the revelation showing no passion for the subject. Father Carapelli thanked David for listening. Later, on reflection, the priest realized how disappointed he felt. It seemed evident that he had been presumptuous to hope it was his destiny to mold the future world leader.

    Rome, One Year Later

Father Carapelli decided to retire to Rome allowing him to spend most of his time writing. David had just finished his freshman year in pre-law at a university in Rome. He asked for an appointment to meet Father Carapelli at his office in the Vatican.

David it is so good to see you. How are your studies going?

Very well thank you David responded politely.

What David didn’t say was his study bordered on boring yet he had maintained his position at the top of his class. The young women at school were beautiful but had such loose morals that he had no interest in someone else’s seconds. Nevertheless, David was purposeful, so he got right to the point.

Father Carapelli I asked to see you for a specific reason. I need to discuss a spiritual matter and there is no one except you that might understand. I have thought about our conversation related to mystical Jewish theology. I trust you enough to discuss something very personal.

Yes David, go on Father Carapelli said intentionally showing no emotion.

David knew that what he was about to reveal would not be sanctioned by the institutional church. I had an encounter with an angel of light David blurted out.

Father Carapelli thought this was not the time to ask questions but rather to listen. David looked to see if his mentor seemed skeptical or accepting, but Father Carapelli indicated neither. Yes David, go on.

This is why I came to you. The angel told me of the secrets of Kabbalah! Father Carapelli eyes widened as he looked up. David continued The angel made a blood covenant with me to empower me through Kabbalah.

Father Carapelli leaned forward And what were the terms of the covenant?

David hesitated but responded with confidence That I would serve him and in return, I would rule the world one day. He said I was the Anointed One. This is my destiny! David paused again Will you instruct me?

    Brussels, Belgium, Several Years Later

John Diehl was hosting a discreet meeting of ostensibly independent business, religious, and political leaders secretly known as The Consortium. Each participant wielded substantial political power and influence in their respective countries. The spacious conference room contained a large solid walnut table and plush leather chairs. Paintings by Picasso, Kahlo, Monet, and Matisse adorned the walls. Two attractive female assistants in tight white blouses and short black skirts provided refreshments specific to each guest’s taste. Incidentally, each assistant was as educated and refined as any of the guests.

Chairman Diehl gave the participants time for pleasant conversation. He also made sure they were given the appropriate amount of personal attention from the two lovely assistants.

John Diehl called the meeting to order. I have asked my protégé to explain our plan. I think you all know David de Saint. He will present an economic proposal we have been developing for some time. David you have the floor. David Antoine de Saint was an extraordinarily eloquent lawyer turned politician from Italy with a calm yet charismatic personality.

David stood, buttoned his suit jacket and made eye contact with each person seated at the conference table. He spoke with confidence and authority even though he was much younger than the other guests. He used no notes and no visual aids but only succinct well-chosen words to paint a picture of his vision for a unified Europe. "Gentlemen the world economies are in chaos. The failed theory which created the European Union is no longer viable. Voluntary commitment to sound economic principle was never going to work. Even so, the framework is available for us to use to our advantage.

Strong centralized leadership is what was lacking. We have code named this project Babylon the Great. It is, in essence, to federalize the European Union into one unified economic block. For too long we have competed against each other. Now we will unify to compete against the Americans, the Chinese, and the Russians. This is imperative because we live in very treacherous financial times. The next world superpower will be as a result of economic production. We will either win the race together or become disassociated second class nations.

David could feel his throat tightening, so he took a sip of water. This was the first time he had been put in a position to outline his plan for world domination to a group of world leaders that might actually have the influence to make it happen. How ridiculous, almost comical he thought, an administrative assistant outlining his plan for world conquest. Even so, he believed his destiny was to conquer the world, and that gave him confidence.

Providence, David continued forcefully, has blessed us such that fear of monetary collapse is rampant. The economic panic is stronger than national pride or even individual liberty. Nevertheless, we can use that anxiety as a sword to divide and conquer the world. Now is the time to position ourselves boldly and decisively. There are three primary motivating factors in Europe’s psyche: economic stability, peace, and protection from terrorists. Two of the three can be dealt with by legislative action. First, we must federalize the European Union for economic stability. Second, we will propose a peace plan or more specifically the promise of peace. Third, the terrorists cannot be reasoned with, but we can use that threat to our advantage. The European Union will need an elite police force to operate under the direction of the Commission. We will use that weapon to enforce our policies. David unbuttoned his jacket, looked around the room at each man then sat down awaiting questions.

Chairman Diehl opened the floor for questions. The representative from France spoke first What are the main obstacles to your plan?

David didn’t bother to stand. The Middle East is the initial obstacle with the instability of our oil supply. America, China, Japan, and Russia all have a vested interest. The European and Japanese economies are dependent on oil at a reasonable price, the Russians and Americans less so.

The U.S. Senator asked, What about global warming? That is a hot-button issue in Europe and America.

David smirked It is amazing how stupid__ Then he caught himself and continued. We will use it to our advantage, another solid reason to federalize Europe under a governing body sensitive to the environment. We will promise to cut our carbon footprint by half. We will save the planet. Everyone laughed.

The representative from Germany spoke next. Your plan may be a little ambitious and hypothetical since the European Union has functionally fallen apart. Do you think it is possible to Federalize the European Countries, and if so, how long?

David smiled That is a very good question. We must if we are to be successful in this economic environment. As to ‘how long,’ the truthful answer is it depends on circumstances. A really good terrorist attack or oil embargo would accelerate the process. We have some critical scientific papers related to global warming that we are holding onto until the right time when they have the maximum impact. Several of the European countries are basically bankrupt due to entitlement programs. People are out of work, and that puts tremendous pressure on politicians. Now if someone just threatened to set off the Middle East powder keg our plan could be accomplished in months not years. My recommendation is that we be positioned, but we cannot push before the circumstances are right then we must strike decisively.

The world was desperate for an economic solution, any solution and this one was simple and feasible. Everyone looked please with the idea of Babylon the Great.

Chairman Diehl stood. We have an important event tonight with excellent media coverage. Our theme is global warming and peace. We have Ariadne Cerberus from Greece to pray for peace and Italian actress Sophia Borne to talk about global warming. We also have African singer Mel Springer to champion healthcare for AIDS victims. I am looking forward to seeing all of you there.

    Brussels, Belgium

The European Union Gala was the premier event of the European social calendar, attended by A-List personalities from all over the world. Jeremiah Johnson received an invitation at the last minute only because he was the guest of Rabbi Avraham ben Gaon, a noted ancient language scholar and archeologist. Jeremiah was, in fact, of no influence or consequence in comparison to the other guest. However, he looked presentable in his rented tuxedo.

Jeremiah, a native Texan, had moved to Alaska when his wife of over forty years died. Over the last month, he had been doing research in Israel with Rabbi ben Gaon. Both men shared an interest in ancient Hebrew texts as well as mystical Jewish religions. They had been poking around in a town in Israel called Zepat known for its connection with Kabbalah. Rabbi ben Gaon suspected that a form of mysticism was being practiced in Zepat. However, the locals were closemouthed to the point of being down right inhospitable.

Jeremiah wanted to attend this event for one reason, to meet Ariadne Cerberus. The media referred to Ariadne as Ari like a pop-singer. Jeremiah described Ari as a Jewish-Greek-Catholic-Orthodox-Progressive-Humanist personality. He had blasted onto the world media stages for his stand on peace, global warming, women’s rights, and anything else that is presently of interest.

Ari seemed to have no worldly possessions but traveled with the jet-set. Tonight he had unleashed his personality wearing a lavish dark purple tuxedo with bright fuchsia cummerbund and bow tie. One woman actually fainted at his pontifical presence. To any spiritually perceptive person Ari was something less than authentic. Even so, giving him credit he had managed to be warmly embraced by the media and the liberal branch of every faith except Islam. He wore no jewelry except a large gold signet ring on his right hand with an unusual seal on the top. He just oozed charisma, feigned humility, and always had a profound religious sound bite as though it had been written by Walt Whitman. What interested Jeremiah was that Ari was rumored to have an in-depth knowledge of Kabbalah. He also wanted a good look at that ring.

Jeremiah looked around the room while waiting. Paintings by famous artist adorned the walls. The floors were of Italian marble. The men wore black tuxedoes with starched white shirts, a sub-servant touch to the outrageous designer gowns worn by the women. Caviar was served on little six-sided crackers along with enough champagne to float the Titanic. Jeremiah thought to himself, the only thing fish eggs are good for is bait. On the other hand, that smoked salmon is tasty and those tiny crab balls are yummy.

Jeremiah was uncomfortable attending a social function of this order, becoming less cordial with each passing year. He ordered a beer from the bar. The bartender commenting curiously, We are not serving many of those tonight. People seemed to be having a grand time while Jeremiah was beginning to feel like the walls were closing in on him. I’d rather be in bed. I got up early this morning in Jerusalem, and I’m dogged tired. When is that phony Ariadne going to make it over here?

Jeremiah positioned himself to one side of the spacious ballroom allowing him to act as a passive observer. From his position, he was between the ballroom and the kitchen, from which those tasty crab balls kept coming. He was more of a people watcher than a people pleaser. Jeremiah had a natural bent towards isolation and the personality of a pugnacious caged badger. Avraham sometimes referred to him as the hermit from Homer (Alaska). Jeremiah was bored senseless, or as he would say, standing there like a calf lookin’ at a new gate.

WAITING ON ARIADNE, Jeremiah began to think about how this last visit to Israel had been particularly rewarding. On past trips, he had made acquaintances with several Arab shopkeepers who sometimes had access to interesting artifacts. One wily old scoundrel of a shopkeeper left a message at Jeremiah’s hotel asking to meet with him that night. I know of something you might be very interested in. Meet me at 10:00 o’clock tonight outside the Damascus Gate and bring cash.

That night Jeremiah met his acquaintance, entering through a small side gate. They rambled down the deserted street to the shopkeeper’s place without saying a word. The night was cool with a gentle southerly breeze, the smell of dinner still hanging in the air. Jeremiah looked at his watch as the shopkeeper unlocked the door. It was 10:00 o’clock straight up.

Once inside Jeremiah inquired, Tell me about this person and what does he have that it would be of interest to me? The shopkeeper was busy fixing a pot of coffee, temporarily ignoring Jeremiah’s question. The merchant’s shop smelled stagnant like an old house.

I don’t know him the shopkeeper answered walking into the main room. This man is one of the mystic Jews. He came to me because he needed cash money to get his family out of Israel. He wouldn’t tell me exactly what he had, but he said you would be willing to pay anything to look at it.

That didn’t make sense to Jeremiah He mentioned me by name?

Yes, the shopkeeper answered. They shared a cup of strong black coffee then another, Jeremiah looking down at his watch again. It was 10:45.

    Jeremiah stood He isn’t coming.

Patience my friend, patience the shopkeeper replied, these kinds of things take time.

There was a knock at the side-door. The shopkeeper opened the door. Jeremiah noticed a small man who was looking back to be sure he had not been followed. The stranger entered dressed like a Hasidic Jew. He wore a black hat and suit with a white shirt, but he had a distinctly distraught look on his face. The little man stepped into the room closer to the light. He studied Jeremiah as though his life depended on it, his vexing eyes darting back and forth. It was a pleasantly cool night yet perspiration was clearly visible on his forehead.

Jeremiah broke the edgy silence Do I know you?

You do not know me he answered barely above a whisper, but I have heard of you.

The little man had a death grip on a small leather cylinder, maybe eighteen inches long. He looked as though he was trying to make up his mind whether to stay or leave. Jeremiah would have described him like someone who had stepped in the middle of seven sad forests. Without saying a word, he took the cap off the cylinder to slide out a rolled-up parchment, which was made of sheepskin and looked very old. The little man unrolled the parchment on the shopkeeper’s desk. Jeremiah tried to hide the fact that his eyes must have gotten big as silver dollars. The writing was ancient Hebrew. Jeremiah pulled a pair of white cotton gloves from his pocket. He adjusted the lamp and sat in the desk chair to examine the document. His heart was pounding in his chest, and his mouth became drier by the second.

There was anxious silence as Jeremiah examined the inscriptions but then the little man took back the parchment. Where did you get this? Jeremiah asked trying not to sound too eager.

The man wanted to say as little as possible My offer is to let you read it only.

This whole evening didn’t make sense. First, the little man was late, and then when he arrived, he acted like the hounds of hell were hot on his trail. However, one thing was for sure. Jeremiah wanted a second look at that parchment.

I am confused Jeremiah said testily, you show me a document then you tell me it isn’t for sale.

The man was getting exasperated I must return the parchment tonight. It is a matter of life and death. It is something you will never see again in your lifetime.

The little man shifted his balance from foot to foot looking more like he was going to bolt than stay. Jeremiah wanted him concentrating on the transaction and hopefully the money which might help settle his nerves. With the initial examination, Jeremiah had determined that this parchment contained secrets about Kabbalah.

I need to study this kind of document. A cursory read is of little value to me. I need to read it and take pictures for study later Jeremiah explained.

That is out of the question! the little man shot back defensively.

How much money do you need? Jeremiah asked knowing this was the time to discuss money.

Ten-thousand dollars American, the little man muttered apprehensively. Now they were in the interesting part of the negotiating but there was one thing wrong. Jeremiah didn’t have ten-thousand dollars.

You mean to sell the document, right? Jeremiah probed.

The little man took a step back desperately clutching the document I said I must return it tonight!

Jeremiah put his hand up to his chin as though considering his options, but he knew exactly where he wanted to go with this dialogue. And he had to have photographs to study. You will have to trust my word. If I take a picture you have my word that only one other person will ever see this document. That person is Avraham ben Gaon, and he can be trusted also. We have dealt in secret things before. You will never be exposed by what I do with the pictures. The little man knew of Avraham ben Gaon. He seemed to be a little less tense. Jeremiah wanted to strike a deal quickly I will give you three-thousand dollars American right now for letting me read the parchment and take pictures.

The little man desperately wanted to be out of there. Five thousand dollars American he responded. That was a lot of money for a picture, but Jeremiah believed the document was authentic.

I told you that I could be trusted Jeremiah said calmly. You need to get this back, so I will agree to five thousand.

Jeremiah reached in his vest pocket to pull out an envelope. Five thousand dollars were exactly the amount he had brought with him. He never expected to spend all of it, especially on a photograph. Jeremiah handed the envelope to the little man, and he handed Jeremiah the parchment.

Jeremiah took digital pictures first then switched to his 35mm SLR in case better resolution was necessary. He carried two cameras with him in such situations to document where and who provided the artifact, but taking a picture of the little man was out of the question. Jeremiah poured over the parchment for maybe twenty minutes. It was like looking at a ghostly echo from an ancient world. The document was a detailed description of the Kabbalah priesthood describing their ordinances and procedures.

Finally, the little man interrupted I must go.

Is this in practice today? Jeremiah asked. "Is this part of the Zohar (kabbalistic text)?

I cannot say he said nervously. The little man put out his hand for the parchment but to Jeremiah that was a qualified yes.

Still wearing gloves Jeremiah carefully rolled the parchment then placed it in the cylinder. Thank you for letting me examine it. Are there others?

The little man put the cap on the cylinder I don’t expect to be alive__ then he stopped mid-sentence. He counted out five hundred dollars handing it to the shop keeper as his commission.

As he turned to leave Jeremiah said, Shalom.

The man turned around with that same desperate look in his eyes. Pray for my family and he left as mysteriously as he had come.

JEREMIAH, JEREMIAH, AVRAHAM’S voice penetrated Jeremiah’s daydream. I’ve been looking all over for you.

Jeremiah shook his head, returning his attention to the present. Ariadne was making the rounds, so he was finally getting near to where Avraham and Jeremiah were standing. When Avraham introduced the two men, Ariadne elevated his right hand as though Jeremiah was supposed to kiss it. He has to be kidding. Jeremiah reached out taking hold of Ariadne’s hand and turned it so that he could take a mental picture of the ring. All the while Ariadne was desperately trying to retrieve his hand. Jeremiah made some meaningless comment about what an honor it was to meet him. Ariadne returned the compliment with about as much sincerity. Jeremiah turned loose of Ariadne’s hand hoping to engage him in a conversation about Kabbalah. Before Jeremiah could ask a question Ariadne excused himself to bestow his
