    INTRODUCTION

In my many years of working in corporations, I found myself very involved in recruiting minorities to corporate America. I often took an interest in personally assisting young college graduates with advice on what they needed to do to get a position with my company. I had been working for my then current company and knew exactly what they wanted and needed for sales positions. Consequently, when I talked to prospective candidates, I could offer insight on what was necessary for them to be successful.

When my children graduated from college they asked me what they needed to know to get a job. I started coaching them on all of the things they needed to learn. I explained all of the phases of getting a job.

Once they mastered the information, they were very successful getting optimum employment opportunities.

One day my daughter asked me some pertinent questions about the job search process. Once we completed our conversation, she stated that I should start a seminar program for college graduates. Upon reflection, I felt she had a good idea and that I needed to work on the computer to prepare some information to give out in my seminars. I started working on the information, and worked an hour a day for six months.

I continued the process until one day my wife came in and asked how many pages I had created for the seminar. I told her around one hundred and fifty pages, and she said that I had written a book. I was shocked, because all I was trying to do was put together information for a seminar. However, when my wife said I had created a book I realized she was right. I said this to say that if I can write a book, there is a book inside everyone.

    CHAPTER 1

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU START YOUR JOB SEARCH.

    STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The purpose of this program is to assist college graduates with information and direction in assisting them in securing their first job in the industry and company of their choice, and to assist them in their career. This information has been developed to help recently graduated students who are looking for information on the skills and tools to successfully enter the job market.

This program is designed to enhance and provide information to candidates who need assistance in developing skills in key areas such as:

    1.   How to locate Dream Job employers.

    2.   How to craft the most effective prospecting letter, which is commonly referred to as a cover letter. We call them prospecting letters, because you are mining your talent to strike gold.

    3.   How to craft a Killer resume that highlights your education and qualifications to get you in the interview process.

    4.   We give you the most commonly asked interview questions, and an explanation of what the interviewer means when they

ask questions. Most importantly, sample answers of how you should answer the interviewer’s questions.

    EMPLOYMENT OVERVIEW

    •   A candidate can utilize their education and qualifications to increase securing a position in the industry and at a targeted company.

    •   A college graduate can use his or her college experience to attract the companies they would like to work for.

It is very important that you develop an organized approach to developing job leads, getting interviews, and achieve the jobs of your choice to advance your career. You can no longer count on one or two sources to find jobs. You must now venture into all areas of the employment picture, exploring every option to advance your career. Historically a person could open the paper to the classifieds and get leads, interviews, and jobs. Now you need to expose your talents and skills to all levels and types of employers, because you never know where the best employment opportunities will come from.

The objective is to expose your talents to as many job opportunities, in as many areas as possible for you to accomplish your goal in the shortest amount of time. Thus, lets now look at the differences between corporations and major companies.

    CORPORATIONS AND MAJOR COMPANIES OVERVIEW

The largest segment of the work force is in the private sector, which is made up of medium to small size companies. Many candidates feel more comfortable in this type of organization. The atmosphere is geared to be more personalized, relaxed, and people oriented. The major benefits of medium to small companies are that they generally have a closer-knit group of people who function well together. Which usually eliminates the politics that you find in corporations and major companies.

However, the most desirable entry-level positions are in corporations and major companies. These organizations offer the entry level person the opportunity to move rapidly through their promotional system, plus other additional benefits such as; company cars, pension plans, medical and dental plans, and quarterly or annual bonuses.

Mega conglomerates control many corporations. All of these companies are major corporations by themselves, with products that are marketed in their respective industry. Many corporations are made up of separate and independent companies within the corporate family.

Needless to say, corporations employ a large work force to maintain their business locally, nationally, and internationally. To maintain such a large employee base they must consistently hire, train, and promote people throughout their various company divisions. What makes this type of corporation such a desirable opportunity is that you have the opportunity to grow in the company. Also, one is exposed to all of the other companies owned by the corporation and their competitors.

The differences between a corporation and a major company are: corporations are multiple companies, owned by one large corporation with shareholders. A major company may be defined as a large company with
