- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I usually don't read supernatural thrillers but after reading the summary for Syroia by Cheyenne Mitchell I was intrigued. This novel is a lot darker than I had expected. Not that I expected it to be all butterflies and rainbows but it did take me by surprise.Syroria is the name of the town in which this novel takes place. It's a picturesque town that anyone would want to live. Syroria is named after one of Arquito's ancestors. The town has a lot of history and some of it is not so good. Arquito or Quito has grown up in this town. Everyone knows who he is and he's well liked. On Quito's 35th birthday he receives an old diary from his parents. The diary once belonged to his uncle who committed unspeakable crimes. His parents feel that by Quito reading the diary it might help him understand and put together bits and pieces of his past. The timeline in the story is split between the present and the past. At times is was a little confusing as I wasn't sure exactly when the story was taking place. However I did like this aspect of the story. I think it really added to making the story suspenseful.Quinto is the main character of the story. He is from a prosperous family that holds dark secrets. Quinto's character was hard for me to get behind. On one hand I understand the reasons for his actions but on another, he commits heinous crimes that left me sick to my stomach. However his character is compelling and I didn't want to stop reading until I found out how this book ended. Syroria has a multitude of characters that have interesting stories as well. I really like Quinto's sister, Lucie. She marches to the beat of her own drum and is really brave. There are parts of this book that I wish the author had offered a further explanation on such as the relationship between Quito's parents. I also would have liked to see more of the police investigation into the crimes. I really liked the historic element in the novel. I thought it was really interesting the way the information is uncovered.Syroria is a novel that deals with issues such as the occult, demon possession and cover-ups. At times this book gave me chills. This book is not for the faint of heart because it does deal with heinous crimes. However if you're into suspenseful thrillers of the supernatural kind this book just might be for you.
