Introduction
Jacob, Mark and Sam have been friends for as long as they can remember. Jacob laughed as he reminded Sam and Mark of how they had big road races with their cars in the sand when they were sandbox buddies.
Now they are in junior high.
They are all about the same height, but it is easy to tell them apart, even from a distance. Mark has very light blonde hair, Jacob has bright red hair, and Sam’s hair is black and curly.
They live in the town of Hopeland, population 12,000. Hopeland is only twenty minutes from the city where their dads work. Many of the homes in Hopeland are built on five or more acres of land at the foothills of the mountains.
Mark’s dad teaches horticulture at the university, and that is why Mark grew up learning to take care of plants. His parents gave Mark a large part of the garden area so he can grow whatever he wants to plant. It is full of flowers, vegetables, and many kinds of berries that he is trying to crossbreed for hybrid berries.
Jacob’s dad is a veterinarian and has an animal hospital in the city. Jacob’s favorite Saturdays when he was young had been the ones he spent with his dad, helping him take care of the animals and birds that came into the hospital. When Jacob’s parents built a new house on another part of their acreage, Jacob talked them into leaving the old garage so he could have a place for his pets. It soon became a menagerie for all his pets, including many birds.
Sam’s dad teaches astronomy and physics at the university. Sam’s favorite birthday present was the high-powered telescope that his parents gave him on his tenth birthday.
Not only did he spend a lot of time learning about the universe, but he also had become interested in mechanical things. When Sam’s parents built a new, larger home on another part of their land, they remembered how much Jacob enjoyed the old garage that had become his menagerie, and so they left their old garage sitting out in a field. That garage gives Sam a place where he could try out his skills creating inventions. He calls them his secret projects.
The three friends’ parents are also friends. The boys grew up listening as their parents talked about life and how they believed all things were possible if you believed in them enough, concentrated and meditated, and then worked with a positive feeling about what you wanted to do. The boys all used this philosophy when they worked on their hobbies.
The Trip To Planet Green
H ey, you guys,
Sam called when he saw his friends Jacob and Mark walking down the street. I have been looking for you. I finally finished working on my transport vehicle and I’m ready to take it on a test flight… Do you guys want to go with me?
Oh, yes!
answered Jacob! You mean we finally get to see your big secret project? Sam’s two friends were on their toes with excitement. Sam had been keeping his project a secret for a long time and Jacob and Mark had waited for this day. When they walked into the garage, Mark and Jacob were both talking at the same time.
Wow! What does it do? What do you call this thing? Can we get in it and sit down?"
Well, I’ve named it the U Cell,
Sam answered. What it does is simply amazing; hop in there is room for three.
The boys climbed in. Well, what do you think?
asked Sam These seats are great but where are the seat belts?
asked Mark.
That is one thing I have perfected, Sam explained.
I have eliminated all gravity in the U Cell so you don’t need seat belts and you won’t feel any gravity or the motion of speed. Why don’t we just take a short trip this first time, we won’t be gone more than a few hours.
Okay. said Mark.
Sounds good," said Jacob. Sam pushed a button on the control panel of the U Cell and the whole roof of the garage opened up. Sam pushed another button and the U Cell hummed swiftly to life. Within
