My friend Lynne has been taking her grandsons for suburban train trips since they were three. They love talking about what’s outside, where the train is going, how the emergency stop button works… and on it goes.

‘We get off somewhere new each time and just walk around the streets,’ she told me. ‘There is always something interesting to look at and talk about.’
