About this ebook

Life is in ones own hands
Believe it or not but your life is in your own hands. You can achieve any goal that you desire but you need to take a step up. Feeling sorry for your state of consciousness or feeling a victim of life will not help you to achieve any goal in life. It shows lack of understanding of the spiritual laws. Knowledge is the key to opening the inner treasures of life.

All those who are satisfied with their material life but are disillusioned with their inner happiness or those who follow religious paths but have not been able to achieve an inner happiness will find this book an essential tool with which to begin on their inner journey. It is the birthright of Soul to seek truth. God does not belong to any one religion and in fact has very little to do with the religions of the physical world.

This book contains important information as to who we are, what our goal in life is and how to achieve it. It highlights the three ingredients that are needed to obtain liberation from this world of illusion: a Living Master or a Sat Guru who helps Soul in his inner journey; The Light of God; and The Sound of God.

Those who are already on a spiritual path will find this information useful to review their progress. New seekers will find the guide extremely useful.

Author

Surjit S. Chowdhary

Surjit Singh Chowdhary was born in Uganda and now lives in the U.K. He believes that unless you seek truth you cannot find it. Truth cannot be taught but only caught. He has been seeking God since he was a child and believes that it is the birth right of each soul to seek Truth. Currently he follows the teaching of Light and Sound, which is the ancient wisdom for today. Its teachings emphasize the value of personal experiences as the most natural way back to God. He has written this book from personal experiences to assist seekers like himself on the path to God-Realisation and has highlighted the tools that are necessary to do so.

Take a Step Up - Surjit S. Chowdhary

    Where Are We?

Knowingly or unknowingly, whether one believes it or not, we are all traveling on a path that leads us back home. Science has shown the evolution of mankind and to some extent has acknowledged the higher worlds, in terms of troposphere, tropopause and stratosphere, although it has not been able to prove that life exists in those worlds as yet. The path of involution for each unique Soul is what is known as a Spiritual Path.

    This book

    highlights the

    fundamental

    aspects or tools

    which may prove

    invaluable to true

    seekers of God and

    to those who have

    begun a serious

    walk on their own

    chosen path.

This book highlights the fundamental aspects or tools which may prove invaluable to true seekers of God and to those who have begun a serious walk on their own chosen path. It will also be useful for seekers who are experiencing disillusionment with their set of beliefs or with life generally. It does not advocate a change in religion, but will give the reader a better understanding of where one stands in relation to one’s journey home.

It will also be useful reading for those who do not believe in God but know that some power exists outside of them; in particular those who question the need for Self-Realization or God-Realization, and also those of us who feel trapped in the materialistic world of today and have quite forgotten our true nature and heritage. I have found that people who question the existence of God are usually more open to the flow of spirit than some people who claim to be religious, especially if all they do is practise a set of rituals to appease the gods for their own material gains.

There is a difference between a religious path and a spiritual path; A spiritual path may not necessarily be a religious path. A spiritual path is a serious path for a seeker who is in earnest search of himself as Soul. It is a path of life as God is Life. Life is the greatest gift that God has given to Soul and it is this realization that will lead us to understand who we truly are.

    Life is the greatest

    gift that God has

    given to Soul and it

    is this realization

    that will lead us to

    understand who we

    truly are.

Most religious paths today are rife with dogmas and rituals. They tend to become paths of social order and culture as they busy themselves with good or bad in the physical world and passing views and judgments over one another. They are the creators of the Moralistic Laws of these worlds. They have very little to do with understanding life or making progress towards God, but more with image and social order in society. It is only through the grace of a true Master who is a Sat Guru, that the veil of illusion is lifted and one learns reality for what it is.

It is important for one to understand that consciousness has dramatically evolved during the last two to three decades in particular. The teachings brought by prophets of various religions were geared for the consciousness of people in particular periods of time. From my personal experiences, today, teachings of the highest orders are available to mankind on earth and are attracting many Souls from other planets of the universe where life exists. Souls who have much higher intelligence than human beings of this earth have taken birth on this Planet Earth to take advantage of the spiritual growth and of these Divine teachings.

    To re-ignite our

    spiritual quest, this

    century will bring

    about the greatest

    miracle that

    humanity has ever

    experienced. The

    first miracle of this

    kind took place

    when the

    pre-historic man

    was lifted into

    human

    consciousness.

I do not condemn religions in any way since religions form an essential part of the schooling of Souls. However, I do think it is important to stretch ourselves and not be pegged down by teachings that may have dimmed in relevance to today’s needs.

To re-ignite our spiritual quest, this century will bring about the greatest miracle that humanity has ever experienced. The first miracle of this kind took place when the pre-historic man was lifted into human consciousness. Presently, the on-coming golden opportunity in this Kali Yuga (the Last Age) has now arrived to uplift mankind from human consciousness to cosmic consciousness, and indeed, beyond even that. Many beings from other worlds are already taking advantage of this miracle, so, as human beings of the Planet Earth, why should not we also enjoy this invitation from Spirit?

    My Own Quest

I started work on this book several years ago but for various reasons I could not take this project forward until recently. Then, it took me a further year and a half to complete. Truth as I understood it a few years ago is very different from Truth as I now understand. I realize that I now have the added benefit of greater awareness; this resulting from spiritual growth over the past few years.

    It is important for the

    seeker to understand

    that Truth does not

    change. It may be of

    an ever-expanding

    nature but in essence

    It does not change;

    but our awareness of

    It does change over

    time.

It is important for the seeker to understand that Truth does not change. It may be of an ever-expanding nature but in essence It does not change; but our awareness of It does change over time. As our awareness expands, so does our consciousness and our ability to understand Truth. When we come to this understanding, we become more tolerant of the views and beliefs of others and understand that everything is in its rightful place. Another important thing about understanding Truth is that it is only for those who seek it and not for the masses.

I have been very fortunate to have been born in a family surrounded by many beautiful Souls who are also seekers of the ultimate Truth. I can see clearly how certain events have played a significant part in my life, right from the time I was conceived, in maturing my Soul and encouraging me to get on the path of God. It is only now that I understand the significance of certain events around my birth. I was an accident baby that is to say that my conception was not planned by my parents and as abortion was not an option in those days, my mother carried me to full term. Thanks to my good fortune, I was born in this family which made it easier for me to grow spiritually. Whilst it is not important to be born in a spiritual family to find Truth, it is important to understand that one becomes the company one keeps. If a person spends most of his time in pubs and clubs, it is likely that he will consume a lot of alcohol or even become alcoholic. Hence the concept of Satsang, or spiritual classes. Most religions and spiritual paths stress the importance of keeping the company of the Saints, or Souls who have reached the Soul Plane, the plane of Self-Realization.

    Whilst it is not

    important to be born

    in a spiritual

    family to find

    Truth, it is important

    to understand that

    one becomes the

    company one keeps.

A true seeker will always seek the company of other seekers. At the same time, the Masters might wish to use him or her as a channel for giving love. A cup which is filled to the brim cannot take in any more unless it is emptied. Thus the seeker must give to life in one way or another so that his cup of divine love keeps filling. This is the true reason for doing sewa, which is voluntary service, as is done not only in eastern religions but also in western religions. If this is done, not in order to receive blessings, but only for giving out divine love, it would be most beneficial for Soul.

When my father was a teenager, he heard an inner voice that told him that one day someone will come to him and show him God. Several years later, he found Avatar Meher Baba, who became his Master and linked him with the Light and Sound of God. Meher Baba instructed my father in the inner worlds that I should not be dropped, as he wanted me to take birth. I am eternally grateful for the Master’s intervention for taking such a great interest in me.

    A cup which is filled

    to the brim cannot

    take in any more

    unless it is emptied.

    Thus the seeker must

give to life in one way

    or another so that his

    cup of divine love

    keeps filling.

Thus I was born in a small town in Uganda. At my birth, the local bishop was called by the nurses to examine the bright circle on my forehead. The nurses were fascinated as they said they had never seen before a child born with a mark like mine.

At the same time, Meher Baba had invited my father over to India to have his Darshan. This is the meeting of the Master in the physical. I now realize how fortunate my father was in having a Living Master take so much interest in him and we shall see later how important it is to have a Living Master for any serious seeker on the path to God. My father himself was a great Soul from whom I learned a lot about spiritual matters. His knowledge was great and for the seeker it is important to note that ignorance is not a virtue but only a handicap on a spiritual path. Love is essential but knowledge too is crucially important. After an inner experience I had about my father, I once told him that he would take birth again as a Spiritual Master. He laughed and said that I was the third person who had said this to him. His countenance shone with divine love that poured out from him every time he talked about spiritual matters. To me he was my immediate Guru along with Meher Baba, who was my Spiritual Master for the first four decades of my life.

    His knowledge was

    great and for the

    seeker it is

    important to note

    that ignorance is not

    a virtue but only a

    handicap on a

    spiritual path.

As I have said, I was extremely fortunate to be placed in an environment which was full of beautiful Souls, including my late mother who had a heart of gold; brothers who are also seekers of God; sisters, and their families, all of whom have great understanding of Truth.

I remember my father saying that most English people could be classed as saints in his opinion because they earned an honest living; did not think ill of others and most of all were givers as they had a lot of patience. There is no doubt that they are still the most tolerant society in the world today; if only these good people searched for the Truth and linked up with the Divine Spirit of God. These were the inspirations that made me write this book. This book is for all Souls who are doing everything correctly but know nothing of the inner worlds; partly because they are satisfied with material comfort and partly because no one has told them anything different. This book is also for all who wish to review their spiritual progress.

    This book is for all

    Souls who are

    doing everything

    correctly but know

    nothing of the inner

    worlds; partly

    satisfied with

    material comfort

    and partly because

    no one has told

    them anything

    different.

The invitation to Bombay by Meher Baba was taken up by my father and in December of the same year that I was born, we all left for India to have his Darshan. In those days traveling by ship from Uganda to India took ten to twelve days. Crossing the Indian Ocean was certainly not an easy task to accomplish with six children, especially with all the luggage one had to take, including beddings, pots, pans, stove and groceries as each family was responsible for cooking their own meals.

However, it was important for my father to take all his children to have the Darshan of his Living Master. Darshan is meeting the Master on the physical, and is very important, as being in the orbit of the Outer Master clears the karmic load. Karma are the impressions created by deeds of an individual. Connection with the Inner Master however, is even more important than the outer Darshan.

When Meher Baba saw my father, he asked where the baby was and I was brought to be held by Him. Meher Baba with his Gaze sowed the seed of divine love and blessings upon me. The divine fire has been burning in me ever since I can remember but the full impact of His blessings only became apparent to me when I was in my teens and I can feel these blessings even now.

According to Meher Baba, He had come to sow the seed of love into those seekers who were seeking God, so here I quote the purpose of His mission: I have come to sow the seed of love in your hearts so that in spite of all superficial diversity which your life in illusion must experience and endure, the feelings of Oneness through love is brought about amongst all nations, creeds, sects and castes of the World.

    The desire to find

    Truth is crucial for the

    aspirant on the path

to God because if it is

    not strong enough,

    the Kal Niranjan,

    which is one of the

    names for the

    negative power of the

    lower worlds, will

    tempt him to go

    astray.

The desire to find Truth is crucial for the aspirant on the path to God because if it is not strong enough, the Kal Niranjan, which is one of the names for the negative power of the lower worlds, will tempt him to go astray. A person studying medicine has to be very committed if he or she is to complete the course successfully. The desire to succeed must be very strong. Similarly a seeker on any spiritual path must be bold and prepared to put in the effort to achieve his or her spiritual goal. It is very rare for Truth to be given out to anyone all at once. In my experience Truth is not something that can be taught second-hand but something you need to experience personally. Usually there is a denial factor, as Truth is too much for our consciousness, and it takes time to be realized and accepted. This is why it takes millions of births on the wheel of eighty-four for Soul to realize what Truth is. The wheel of eighty-four is the age-long cycle of life and death.

I now deeply believe the Golden Age is here and now in our current Kali Yuga; this time being the ‘Last’ Age on the eternal wheel for Souls who want to find their way back home. Meanwhile, the force of the negative powers will continue to place obstacles in our path, so the vigilant seeker will also have
