Rachel tried to still the thumping in her chest. Her breath didn't seem to fill her chest the way she wanted it to. She couldn't breathe, but it wasn't the heat. No, the heat was fine. The hijab was surprisingly comfortable, too. She'd been nervous to wear it, thought it made her seem like she was trying to be something she wasn't. When she'd been told by the consulate that she needed to wear it, legally, she'd put one on.

Having a dozen separate people try to stop her and sell her one on the way out of the airport, though? That had really helped to reinforce the fact that whatever she was doing, she sure as hell wasn't offending anyone by wearing it.

But she didn't have time to enjoy the sights or sounds, to mingle. She was in the United Arab Emirates for one reason, and one reason only. Her sister had lived here. She'd been a reporter, and whatever she was covering, it had brought her to Dubai.

Rachel's fists tightened. If it was something dangerous, then why hadn't Caitlyn told her about it? If it wasn't something dangerous, why take an American reporter right up off the street? Didn't people get murdered for that kind of thing?

Well, as it turned out, no they didn't. She'd been almost overconfident when she'd walked into the consulate and demanded to speak to whoever was in charge. If someone was kidnapped, then the American military had the right, and the priority, to go and get them. It made sense. For that matter, they didn't have much money, but she'd thought that the Marigold name had still meant something, somewhere. Her father had been instrumental in covering the Vietnam war, and her grandfather had been one of the biggest producers of World War 2 documentaries.

It was absurd that the 3rd generation of national-level American telereporters, a name that had once been synonymous with news, could be ignored when she went missing in a foreign country. The police in Dubai were trying to hush it all up, they said. They need to avoid creating an image problem. The American consulate's hands were tied, and of course, we didn't have the right to go marching around the world's wealthiest city with rifles in hand.

So she'd gone to the studio, but they said the same thing. No news, can't do anything, can't fix it. So sorry.

But Rachel could do something. She hadn't followed in her father's footsteps, for better or for worse. She was just a writer, and not a particularly successful one. That hadn't stopped whoever had taken her sister from sending her a letter containing
