Introduction - What Is A Good Walk?
Who’s walking who?
The jogger laughs as he moves past, looking at the seventy-pound dog straining against the leash of his petite owner. She is struggling to remain upright and keep hold of the leash, and as funny as the jogger finds his own comment, it just makes her more frustrated.
As a dog trainer, this is a scenario that many of my students find themselves in daily. Walking our dogs is a big part of our modern relationships with our pets, but it is one of the hardest skills for many people to master with their canine companions. Training your dog to walk calmly on a leash can be one of the most time-intensive pieces of dog training most people will undertake.
That doesn’t mean, however, that training your dog to go for a successful walk is impossible. Far from it! This book is intended to be a brief look at some of the basic techniques and tools that can help you and your dog take walks that both of you can enjoy.
Why do dogs pull?
Of course we can’t know for sure, but there are a lot of ideas out there on why dogs strain against the leash. One of the most common theories is the opposition reflex, which causes our canine friends to push into pressure; this means that when they feel the
