HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
This pocket guide contains 101 dog tricks organized by similarity. Teach the first trick in any chapter, and the other tricks in that chapter will build on that skill.
Teach the first trick in any chapter: Shake Hands
Once your dog can shake hands, rotate your palm vertically to teach him to High-5
Pull your hand away at the last second to teach him Pawprint Painting
Have him shake hands at the wall to teach him to Turn Off the Light
Shake hands on his muzzle to teach Hide Your Eyes
Trick training is about more than cute party tricks to entertain your friends. Trick training offers an opportunity to better understand how your dog thinks and have him better understand your cues. It deepens paths of communication, built through repetition and effort.
CAN ANY DOG LEARN TRICKS?
Sure! You’ll find that the more tricks your dog knows, the quicker he’ll pick up new ones. In a sense, you’ve taught him how to learn.
PUT IN THE TIME
When teaching a new trick, it often appears that your dog is not getting the concept and has no idea what the desired behavior is. He’ll be squirming and pawing and obsessing over the treat in your hand. You might feel as if he will never understand. Don’t stress it. Go through the same motions day after day, and one day you’ll see a lightbulb go off in his head. That’s the moment that truly bonds you with your dog.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO TRAIN A DOG?
How many years does it take for a child to become educated? For an athlete to become skilled? How many piano lessons until you’re a musician? Dog training should be thought of as a lifelong process. Although at some point your dog will be able to produce a behavior on cue, he will still need repetition and refinement to maintain and improve his skills. Challenge your dog with new skills for the rest of his life, and you’ll find your bond will increase tenfold.
BASIC TRAINING PRINCIPLES
POSITIVE TRAINING METHODS
In this book we use positive training methods which foster a happy, eager dog who strives to learn. Positive training techniques are not only humane and kind, but also are the fastest and easiest way to train a dog.
Provide a consistent and motivating environment for your dog as you guide him through each new trick. Reward each of his small successes along the way and use your happy voice
to encourage and praise him.
FOOD TREATS
Although a reward for a dog can be a toy, play, or praise, we usually use food treats because they are a high-value reward and can be dispensed quickly. During the learning stages of a new trick, you want to make it very rewarding for your dog by giving lots of treats for every small success. In fact, you may give your dog his entire dinner, piece by piece, during a ten-minute training session.
Keep your dog extra motivated by using people food
treats, such as pea-size pieces of chicken, steak, cheese, goldfish crackers, noodles, or meatballs. Try microwaving hot dog slices on a paper-towel-covered plate for three minutes for a tasty treat!
LURE, DON’T MANIPULATE
There are two obvious ways to get a dog into a desired position: you can lure him by encouraging him to follow a treat, or you can physically manipulate him into position. It is tempting to manipulate your dog’s body physically; however, it can actually delay the learning process, as the dog is not required to engage his brain and is not learning the motor skills necessary to position his body himself. It is always preferable to lure your dog to position his body himself.
REWARD SUCCESS, IGNORE THE REST
One of the key skills your dog will develop through trick training is his ability to problem-solve through experimentation. Encourage your dog to try a lot of behaviors and let him know (with a treat) which ones were correct.
Trick training allows the dog
