About this ebook

NOVEL:

The engine of the Japanese fighter plane screams as it dives almost vertical out of the clear blue sky. The huge frigate battleship enlarges at an alarming rate from inside the cockpit. The unfriendly surface of the ocean races towards the pilot. Death-defying. The sun flashes off the wings of the plane as if giving a final signal. Desperately, the plane wants to transmit a warning in staccato-Morse Code. Then, the engine sputters and spews a desperate smoke signal. 'S-O-S.'
The engine is screaming,
'Imminent danger, imminent danger!'
As the plane plunges into the ocean, the red sun rising on the fuselage, disappears eerily into the foaming ocean.
---------------
After this catastrophic event, the voice of the pilot goes silent. Decades later, a mysterious artefact is discovered. Once discovered, the artefact leads to the most amazing revelations and finds. What could the artefact be? What is the secret story behind the mystery? All the past events are unwittingly uncovered. Mystery upon mystery is unlocked. What could the hidden codes mean? What is the secret behind the written code and the map? (Christian Theme)

Author

William Van Zyl

The author had an interesting and unique childhood. Not travelling abroad - as you would expect - but venturing into the fields, bushes, tools sheds and mysterious underground tunnels around his neighbourhood. His happy place was - and still is - tinkering with ideas, science, and new possibilities. Many times while cycling he will get new ideas; he brings the unexpected, the unique, the creative in a flurry on a page or in a sketch. To this day he dreams of vicious wars and sophisticated weaponry in an innocent child's scout cave. He loves diagrams, timelines, cross sections, sketches, and details of sinister and hidden concepts and ideas; always looking for a new mystery to decode and to encode. He investigates and explores extravagant thoughts which he includes in children's books, stories and articles; he loves to include philosopher’s perspectives, articles,  intriguing stories, and poetry in his writing. Academic and research work are also his forte. He always offers a simple but practical explanation within an engaging context. Not your ordinary thinker! A lifelong scholar and teacher.

    ––––––––

The fountain pen makes a soft scratching sound on the roughly textured calligraphy paper as the forensic scientist writes

‘To mum and dad with love. Haruto.'

In the quiet laboratory, you can hear a pin drop. All eyes are fixed on the writer and the videographer. The glasses of the leading scientist glistens as the paper-white fluorescent light in the room reflects off the metal frame of his glasses. He tilts his head up and down to inspect the tip of the pen and the writing samples. An intriguing question lingers in his head, 'Is this the fountain pen of Haruto?' A slightly rusted vintage fountain pen lies on the scientist’s table. An example of Haruto's handwriting lies next to the pen. The lead scientist takes the sample handwriting and the test-sheet in his hands. He looks at both from different angles; he scans and compares the two documents. He then takes a large magnifying glass and scrutinises the writing on both papers.

    Are the two styles matching?

He points to the tip of the fountain pen and says, It is undoubtedly the same pen that was used to write both of these documents.

Everyone in the room looks up.

The angle which Haruto used to write matches the writing in both the original writing and the test sample, said John.

Yes, says John convincingly. It is certain that it is the same pen.

The three other scientists take the magnifying glass and check the tip of the pen; they place the tip of the pen under a large electronic microscope.

Yes, says Rupert convincingly, I confirm – it is the same pen.

The text is written at an angle of about 60 degrees, and the width of the strokes matches both samples. John points at the signature, The width of the strokes on the paper varies between 1.0 mm and 1.2 mm.

The two leading forensic scientists, John and Rupert, then take turns to sign the authenticity certificate for the fountain pen matching the written text. It is a beautiful certificate with a burgundy coloured embossed stamp in the bottom right corner. The flourishing of the black calligraphy ink makes a striking contrast with the untainted white paper. The round, red embossed seal of certification stares at them like a red-eyed diver who has been under water for too long.

The scientist then lights a small embossing wax stick with a match.  He starts to heat up the burgundy coloured wax. A burning candle scent fills the room. The aroma whispers in a subtle, authentic voice. Wax melts and drips on the paper. Thirsty paper absorbs the first drop. The second drop sets quickly on top of the saturated paper and the small red ribbon. A beautiful circle shape appears.  He takes the embossing signet – which has a symbol for authenticity on it – and presses it into the hot wax at the bottom of the page. Within 3 seconds, the wax takes on the shape of a beautifully embossed seal. A tiny strip of red ribbon hangs from it like a well-deserved prized rosette. A little smoke and the smell of hot wax escapes from under the hot metal signet. It fills the air with a banner of paper poetry. The little red ‘rose’ decorates the certificate with much pride.

We all agree – after extensive testing in the laboratory – that the writing is that of Haruto, the Japanese warplane pilot during World War two,   proclaims John.

John holds the document up for the others to see. The certificate reads:

'This document confirms the authenticity of the writing made with a 1940’s Waterman brand fountain pen with Copperplate Script. The age of the ink was tested, and it is between sixty to seventy years old. The cool temperature, at which the pen was ‘stored’ for so many years, preserved the ink in the reservoir.

The ink found in the pen is typical Sumi-ink. The
