    Christmas Eve 1879

    Chapter 1

    The carriage bounced along the highway, and Emile Hamilton sat longing to be out of the year 1879. However, his companion, Harriet, was determined to visit her friends following the death of her cousin Earl. To make matters worse, it was Christmas Eve, and the weather was appalling. Thunder rippled across the hillsides and lightning flickered and stabbed the darkness.

    ‘Do we really have to do this?’ asked Emile looking out of the window at the rain.

    ‘You don’t have to join me you know,’ Harriet replied.

    ‘Wouldn’t you rather be in the warmth of my time ship rather than here in this antiquated carriage in the middle of winter?’ Emile continued.

    ‘Yes I do know you offered to fly me to our destination,’ she said, ‘it took me a while to accept that you are a time traveller and it wasn’t until you brought me home from New England in a matter of hours that I believed you. However, I somehow think landing a time ship on the front lawn of a stately home is going to be somewhat difficult to explain, and I really do need to attend this funeral.’

    Sighing deeply, Emile nodded his head and said, ‘Yes I quite understand.’

    ‘However,’ said Harriet, ‘you need to play the part of being my fiancé, and you need to behave a lot more reserved than you are doing now!’

    ‘Oh, I do say’ began Emile, ‘that I may be able to manage to play that part, my dear.’ Beginning to laugh, Emile continued, ‘and if I'm sincere, I do believe that I am looking forward to it.’

    ‘Liar,’ said Harriet, ‘There’s no reason why you have to come with me.’
