All Shall Be Restored
Kay Ryan
1996
Introduction
California poet Kay Ryan achieved national recognition when she was asked by the Library of Congress to serve as poet laureate from 2008 to 2009. In 2009, she was asked to serve a second one-year term. Her poetry in general is characterized by its philosophical nature, its efficiency of expression, and by structures that often make use of internal rhyming. Her 1996 poem All Shall Be Restored
exemplifies these characteristics. In this work, Ryan explores the notion that the world will one day return to its original state, a state in which all evidence of humanity's impact on the earth will be erased. The poem is brief, and in succinct terms Ryan offers a broad view of the natural world and the transient nature of humanity's place in this world. While many of Ryan's works are described as both pithy and playful, All Shall Be Restored
has too much philosophical and emotional depth to be treated lightly. While the theme of restoration has positive overtones, in Ryan's poem the idea of restoration is ironically juxtaposed with the erasure of humanity from the planet.
Ryan's All Shall Be Restored
first appeared in the 1996 volume of poetry Elephant Rocks, published by Grove Press.
