Once upon a time, something evil happened in the Great Woods, a very, very large forest right outside the walls of the Village where Evelyn lived. This was not new since something evil happened in the Great Woods at least three times a month. But what happened almost made Evelyn faint with worry, since it involved her mother, Maureen.
Evelyn was at the hospital, looking at a wounded man who was found unconscious near the Path, a bricked roadway running throughout the Great Woods. Also known as the King's Path, the roadway's widest part (about 10 feet wide) ran from the Village's Woods Gate to the forest's other side -- although none of the villagers was sure of this last part since the main Path went on for miles and no one has ever reached the other end.
Narrower parts of the Path branched from the main road to different parts of the Great Woods. Unlike the main road, however, which had four-foot walls on both sides and whose bricks were more or less well-maintained, the narrower branches didn't have any walls and were in different states of disrepair; stones stuck out in places and some were nothing more than muddy dark red paths wide enough for only two people to walk side by side. But nothing ever grew in the Path (even animals tended to shy away from it) so it made for a clear way for people to go through the forest.
The constables, who found the wounded man, notified Evelyn as soon as they reached the Village since he was found in the Path near her mother's house. As for Maureen, the constables found no trace except that the front door of
