Pimped , Occupational Hazards of Contract Employment... - John D
Prologue
Definition of a pimp
"…A person , man or woman, who solicits customers for a prostitute or a brothel,
usually in return for a share of their earnings…"
Guess what, YOU are the prostitute, the company is the customer and
your pimp (recruiter) gets a cut of your wages (earnings).
Is there anything such as a full time job anymore? As jobs come and go, along with people, one has to think about how employment has changed over the years. The gig economy and the rise of temping, consulting and contracting has added a new dynamic into the employment game.
Most of the time, you have to go through an employment agency, temp-firm, recruiting firm (they’re the pimp), to work at a specific company in a certain job capacity.
This book tries to describe in a raw
way what it’s like to be a temp
in today’s workforce and deal with recruiters along with the actual companies you’re placed at. Doing so can be a real grind and there’s a lot of uncertainty to deal with. Some choose this type of work while others have no other choice due to their age, skill set or individual circumstance.
It can be a tough way to earn a living and it’s NOT for everyone. I realize that I haven’t covered all situations that one encounters with temping/contracting but…..this may give you some insight.
I do believe that there are MANY DECENT, HONEST temp/consulting companies, firms, agencies that go out of their way to treat their workers well, are honest and offer actual benefits which make a difference. On the flipside, some are just aggressive body shops
who don’t care about you at all and just want to fill the position.…..that’s the nature of the business.
But if you think about it, we’re all temps…... It doesn’t matter what your profession is, if you’re working full-time or a contract gig, at some point, your job eventually comes to an end.
Good luck…
