Her name was Olivia Mallor. She had dark chestnut hair and eyes that were the color of the sea. All of the girls wanted to be friends with Olivia. She was the captain of the swim team and the president of the student council. She had the looks, the brains, and she was popular. She had a lot of friends, but she still felt alone. Something inside her was missing, and it ate at her all day and night. Olivia got up for school, brushed her teeth, took a shower and grabbed something quick to eat that her mother made for her. She hurried out the door without even bothering to say good-bye. She felt tired of the world, but she didn’t show it. She kept it inside. She thought to herself, ‘Today is the day I’m going to do it. I’m going to kill myself.’

Olivia walked up her tiny street named Maple and knew exactly where she was going. She didn’t want to think anymore, and she was tired of feeling nothing. She was heading to the covered bridge that was a few blocks away. There was no one around as she walked, everyone was either at work or they were at school. As she got to the covered bridge, she couldn’t help but think how free she suddenly felt. The bridge was covered by a barn like red roof. The bridge itself was wood. They didn’t yet succumb to cement. Not many people used the covered bridge, that’s why Olivia thought this was the perfect spot to throw herself off. She leaned over the stony wall and saw that the water was pretty high and that it was moving pretty fast. She looked around to make sure there was no one around. When she didn’t see anyone, she knew that this was the perfect opportunity to jump. She climbed the stony wall and she closed her eyes. She was about to jump when someone grabbed her and pulled her backward. Olivia was angry, she looked up and was about to freak out when she saw this beautiful face in front of her. She couldn’t tell whether he was real or a figment of her imagination.

Then she heard a voice, Hey are you alright? Olivia couldn’t move. She lay on the ground shocked by this guy. He was gorgeous, his eyes were the color of almonds and his hair was dark like licorice. His skin was the color of caramel. She never saw someone so beautiful in her life.

I was uh just taking in the air of the river, Olivia felt her face turn red.

I think it was more than that. My name is Chris by the way, as he helped her up.

    Um, my name is Olivia.

It’s okay you don’t have to worry about me, I’m not going to say anything to anyone. I couldn’t just let a young girl destroy her life by jumping off a bridge, she smirked.

I’m sorry? Young? Olivia exclaimed, You don’t know me at all, you have no idea what’s going on in my life and if I want to take the short way out of life, so be it.

Chris looked at her and grinned, If that’s what you want to do, then go for it. I’ll stand here and keep watch. I’ll make sure no one comes by to disturb you.

Olivia felt irritated, I’d rather you leave if you don’t mind! I don’t need some guy standing behind me!

I’m sorry but I can’t just leave now, I’m a witness. I’ll just stand here and be a sort of look out, Chris said.

Fine, she said. She turned around, took a step up onto the wall, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. She was just about to jump when he pulled her down again.

What the hell did you do that for? she yelled.

I just couldn’t let you go through with it. Your life can’t be that terrible that you want to end it. Have you thought about how your family would feel? Olivia stared at him and she could feel that her chest was starting to tighten. She let out a big sob and tears started flowing down her cheeks. She tried to hold them back but something he said touched her in a way she hadn’t felt in a long time. Chris walked over to her and put his arms around her. He hugged her tight and she let him. Olivia didn’t know him, but she felt at that moment that he was going to be something special to her from that moment on.

Chris and Olivia became inseparable from that moment on. When Olivia had to go to swim practices or go to a match, he was there. Olivia felt as if he were her guardian angel. Chris had graduated the previous year from a high school in Pennsylvania. He lived here in Asheville with his mother, when his parents divorced. He has a sister, LeAnn, and a brother, Johnny. They decided to stay with good old dad in Pennsylvania, mainly because he let them do whatever they pleased. His mother needed a shoulder to cry on so Chris felt it was necessary to come with her. Olivia brought Chris over her house to meet her parents and they disapproved. They didn’t understand what an older boy wanted with a younger girl. She and her parents fought a lot, so Olivia spent more time with Chris. She always told them that they were just friends, but they didn’t understand.

One summer afternoon, Chris and Olivia decided to go to an orchard outside of town. They packed a picnic, put a blanket down to lay on and talked about their aspirations.

Olivia what do you want out of life?

I don’t know, I guess to be happy. I would really like to fall in love and get married. Maybe start a family. Honestly, I’m not sure. I think I have some time to think about it. What do you want out of life?

He looked at her intently, I want the same things. Olivia looked at Chris and could tell there was something passionate between them. They’ve never really touched each other, they were just friends after all. Chris was always a support system for Olivia, they didn’t have feelings like that for one another. Olivia thought he was gorgeous, but he was an older boy and she thought he just wanted to be friends, so she left it at that. She could see him staring at her in a way that made her feel a little funny inside. Butterflies were swirling around in her stomach. She stared into his eyes and felt like she knew him all her life.

Olivia, can I ask you something?

    Sure, she said.

I don’t want you to think I’m weird for asking you this, but I was wondering if I can kiss you? Olivia couldn’t believe her ears, she was thinking the same thing.

Okay, she said nervously. Chris leaned into her and kissed her. Olivia instantly felt something she never felt before.

Wow that was amazing, Chris said.

Olivia blushed, I’ve never kissed anyone before. He smiled at her and he kissed her again. He wrapped his arms around her and they lay down together on the blanket. Olivia thought they were meant for each other and were on the same page.

After that night at the orchard, Chris wouldn’t let Olivia out of his sight. He asked her officially to be his girlfriend and she gleefully said yes. All they wanted was to be with each other.

Olivia was starting to dwindle away from her activities, she just wasn’t interested in them anymore. She was even thinking about quitting the swim team. She didn’t want to mention that to anyone though because she didn’t want anyone to judge her. She had a lot of friends, but she knew they would criticize her, so she kept her mouth shut. Chris would come out to her practices and watch her. Olivia’s friends thought that he was kind of creepy, they knew he was older and didn’t understand their relationship. They did feel a little jealous though. They used to ask her if he had any single friends, but Olivia didn’t know. In fact, she never heard Chris mention any friends. She put it in the back of her mind and forgot about it.

    Hey Liv.

    Hey Jess, what’s up?

I see your boyfriend is here again.

Doesn’t that bother you just a little? Olivia just laughed it off and shook her head.

Of course not, he loves me.

One night after swim practice, Olivia decided to go over Chris’ house, she went over there plenty of times, but she still had yet to meet his mother.

How come your mom is never here Chris?

She’s always working to pay the bills.

How come you don’t work and help her out? Chris gave her an evil look, she immediately regretted asking him that.

I don’t need to work. My only job is to be here with you and look after you. Chris gave her a look that sent chills down her spine, What makes you think you can talk to me like that? You’re going to regret saying that to me! Chris swung his arm back and hit her on her left side of her face. Olivia fell back and covered her face with her hand. She looked at him shockingly, she couldn’t be he hit her. Chris right away felt terrible and ran over to her. He kissed her cheek and apologized. I’ll never do that again Liv, I promise I love you so much.

I don’t understand why you did that.

I’m sorry I just wasn’t thinking, I will never do that again. Chris started kissing her, soothing her. He started unbuttoning her shirt.

Chris wait I don’t know if I’m ready.

It’s okay baby we can wait, I just love you so much.

I just never done this before.

I haven’t either, that’s why I thought this would be special. Chris was able to convince Olivia. He started kissing her gently on her lips and then moved down to her neck. Olivia thought it felt amazing and her heart was beating fast. Chris took off her shirt and started feeling her chest. She was starting to breath heavy, she felt him up against her. She was really nervous but also excited. Are you sure you want to do this Liv?

Yes, I’m sure. I love you. He gently kissed her. She was going out of her mind. He slowly took off her skirt. He started to kiss her more passionately on the mouth and made his way down to her stomach. She pulled off his shirt and kissed his chest. She wanted this to be special since it was their first time.

He lowered her down on the bed and slowly and put himself inside her. She started to wince, I’m sorry, does it hurt?

    A little.

I’ll try and go slow. He started gentle with her, but he wanted her bad. He started to go a little faster. I’m almost done baby, hold on. Olivia was starting to panic because he was going faster. It was starting to hurt like hell, but Chris wouldn’t stop. He started to go even faster. Olivia started screaming for him to stop.

Chris! Please stop! He wouldn’t stop. He covered her mouth with his hand and held her down. All of a sudden, he stopped and rolled over.

How was that for you, he laughed.

Olivia didn’t understand, Chris what the hell was that all about it? I want to go home!

I’m sorry baby but you can’t leave.

What do you mean I can’t leave?

I’m sorry but you heard me right, you can’t leave. Olivia looked at Chris in bewilderment. She got up off the bed and put her clothes on. She walked over to the door, but it was locked.

Chris, open the door. This isn’t funny.

Sorry I can’t do that darling, you’re stuck here, as he gave her a conniving smile. Olivia started to freak out when she saw how serious Chris was. She started screaming at the top of her lungs. Chris got up, covered her mouth and pulled her down on the bed. He hit her in the face and in her stomach. Olivia was trying to cover her face and body, but it was too late. He hit her so hard that she fell back and lost consciousness.

Olivia came to and sat up in the bed. At first, she had no idea where she was. She looked around the room and remembered what Chris had done to her. She felt sore all over and wanted to go home. The room she was intended to be a bomb shelter. The walls were grey ad there was a florescent light above her in the ceiling. It made the room fairly bright. There was a door in the corner of the room and inside was a bathroom. Olivia saw adjacent to the bathroom a window. She walked over to the window and moved the curtains to the side. It wasn’t a window at all. It was a picture of a window with curtains over it. Olivia started to panic and ran over to the door where they came in from. She tried to open it and it was locked. She started to scream again at the top of her lungs. All of a sudden, the door opened, and Chris walked through the door. He grabbed her hair and threw her down on the bed.

Why are you doing this Chris? she asked.

Because I love you and I want you all to myself. You’re going to stay here forever, you’re never go home again.

What do you mean Chris? I need to go home! She started sobbing. He was getting tired of it, so he hit her hard in the face and she collapsed on the bed. Olivia couldn’t believe this was happening to her. Was she really being held captive? Chris walked over to her and pinned her down. Olivia gasped. Chris, please don’t do this.

You’re going to give me what I want from now on. Olivia started screaming. Chris pulled duct tape from his back pocket and taped her mouth shut. You have to be a good girl now and do what you’re told, if not then the tape stays! Do you agree? Olivia lay there stunned she didn’t know what to do so she shook her head slowly. Good girl, now I’m going to take off the tape. Chris pulled off the tape and told her to stand up. Take off your shirt.

    But why?

I want to see you again.

    But you’ve already seen me.

Stop talking and do what I tell you or I’ll put the tape back on. Olivia did as Chris said. Now take off the rest of your clothes. Olivia started to cry, she was so scared. All she wanted to do was go home, but she did what she was told. Now turn around and kneel on the bed. Olivia did as she was told but knew deep down inside that this was wrong. What was he going to do?

She felt him against her and he was naked. He put himself inside her and she winced in pain.

    Don’t even think about screaming!

Please stop, I can’t take anymore! I just want to go home!

I told you what would happen if you didn’t listen to me, he pushed himself against her and this time Olivia was quiet. She just knelt in silence but with tears streaming down her face. Now turn around I want to see that pretty face. Olivia had no choice but to turn around. She saw in his eyes something she had never seen. It was like he was a completely different person. He laid her back down and put himself inside her again. She hesitated but she knew she had to do it. He started to scream her name and then he finished inside of her. He rolled off of her and kissed her forehead. "I love you Olivia, don’t ever forget it. I’ll be right back with some food, so you can keep your energy
