I didn’t know it then, but my life was about to change completely, everything I knew about myself, and my family would be turned upside down. From the moment I stepped off the train I had been watched from the shadows. The following year and a half saw me meet new friends and battle my worst enemies. A lot of things didn’t go to plan and just to name a few, my fiancé Chris was killed and brought back from Valhalla, I was spelled, I nearly died multiple times, but we all made it and won the war eventually, my father, an evil Pixie King, was defeated and so was Ashley his named successor, the only thing left was to organize the secret kingdom. I made Chris promise that we wouldn’t marry until the Kingdom was sorted out and the danger of rebellion had passed, oh did I mention I’m now a Pixie Queen.
Chapter 1.
I chew on my thumbnail as I pace in front of the oak dining table, Chris leans on the back of one of the chairs following me with his eyes. Amy! Aim will you stand still please!
He stands up straight and plants his hands on my shoulders, stopping me in my tracks. Stop pacing you’re making me dizzy.
I pull away from him.
Sorry.
I sit down at the head of the massive table and rap my fingers against the wood. I just can’t wait.
Noah and Alice are due to arrive today, they moved to Maine two years ago when Noah agreed to be my ambassador. Now they’re coming here to visit us, in my father’s mansion, my mansion. Neither can I but we have to stay calm, I can feel how anxious you are.
He smiles slightly and raises an eyebrow. Remember you still have a couple of hours before they land and a council meeting.
I know.
I sigh and lean forward resting my arms on the table. Why is being a queen so boring?
Boring?
He scoffs and waves his arms around. We live in a hidden mansion in the middle of the woods. You’re in charge of a secret society and you think this is boring?
Yeah, I kind of miss the action you know? The fear and adrenaline, whenever my father tried something.
I trace the lines of the wood with tip of my finger. Don’t you miss it?
Chris pulls a chair out and sits next to me. He takes my hands in his and looks me in the eye.
No Aim, I don’t miss it. Do you know why?
He leans forward and tucks my hair behind my ear, I shake my head.
No.
I don’t miss it, hell, I’m glad it’s over because I was tired of everything. I was afraid that I’d wake up one day or I’d come home from work, and you’d be gone. Forever. After Ashley’s spell, seeing you… I … I don’t miss it Aim because I was afraid all the time and I was tired.
He sniffles and tears well in his eyes. He kisses my knuckles softly and stands. He turns his back on me and clears his throat. You better get ready for that meeting. I’ll do a quick perimeter sweep.
Why can’t I go like this?
He stops as he gets to the door, he turns round to face me and stands with his hand on the doorframe. I smile and pick at the paint splattered across my skin. Because you’re in a sports bra, my tracksuit bottoms and you’re covered head to toe in paint.
He smirks and walks away. And you stink!
He shouts the last part from the hall.
Hey! Why you little..?!
I stand up, tipping my chair over and run after him. I bring my hand back to slap him across the ass, but he spins on his heel and catches my wrist mid-air. In one swift motion he spins me round and pulls me into his arms. He leans down and kisses me, my legs turn to jelly as I kiss back. I pull back slightly to catch my breath. That was fast.
He smiles against my lips and kisses me again before pulling back.
Jedi reflexes.
I smile and shake my head.
I love you.
I know.
I peck his cheek, he smiles and lets go of my arms. Now go shower.
Fine. Don’t be long.
I’ll be back before you’re out of the shower.
I step back, he turns away and jogs to the front doors. I watch him leave before heading upstairs.
I push the door open to the privy chamber and take a deep breath, the council members turn to face me. I smooth my skirts down and step into the room. They bow their heads as I walk past them to my desk at the centre of the room. Good morning all, this week’s meeting will be brief as I have other things to attend to today.
I sit down and scan the faces in front of me. My council is mostly made up of pixies but there are two Weres who Chris recommended, their father was friends with Gram, so the Caracal brothers had become ambassadors for the Were community. Neither of them are here today though. Chris slips into the back of the room, I flick my gaze to meet his and glance at the empty seats. He looks over to them and shrugs. Right, firstly has anyone heard from Nik or Kas?
A chorus of ‘no’s’ ripples through the room, my heart races and I scan their faces. No matter what happens I have
