Shahab Shamloo

I was born in Abadan on 01/21/1970 on the Iran/Iraq border . The migration of our family to Tehran coincided with the Iran/Iraq war . I was raised in a bi-lingual home and was taught since my early days to think in two languages and to write in English or Persian in accordance to the relative necessity or depending on the how the relative inspiration descended . Since I was about twelve years old I started to write poetry . I am currently working on my first fictional English novel based on the structure of my true story and hope to conclude it , within it's complete entity within the coming months . The story has been revolving and evolving around my head and heart for more than ten years now . I am open to all suggestions and welcome criticism of all nature . shahabshamloo@yahoo.com Only having a few units remaining for achieving his masters in the field of English Literature in the Azad University of Tehran , Shahab was arrested and detained in solitary confinement for his social-political writings . Imprisoned , brutal methods of physical and psychological torture were conducted upon him . During the uprising of the green movement in 2009 he was arrested and detained again ….only this time he was r…. He has now fled Iran and is currently without country

    In the Name of Humanity

In these lost times in which human beings fear their reflection and flee from their own homes, in this colorful city that is all so vibrant with life and lust resting upon the borderlines of two continents in which cold faces stare upon you like a mobile dollar bill, I thought, now that I have no intentions of returning to my motherland for the sake of protecting my life, I would prepare my poetry collection for publishing.

And as I had plenty of time awaiting for the reputed smuggler who as a result of good fortune speaks the same language with the sweet Dari accent to ship us with an anonymous Bill of Lading to a North European country, where it is said that they respect the freedom and dignity of a human being and have engraved his rights within a solid non-deteriorating stone in the clearest and most readable manner possible, I also made the English translations of my works. As a result of being raised in a bilingual home I had been thought to think in two languages from the start of my childhood enabling my words to take shape at times in Persian and at times in English depending on the necessity or the substance of the relative descending inspiration, therefore the translations have not come out that bad and I am personally satisfied with the work up to 50-60%. Also in order to enrich the English text I have at times increased or reduced from the authentic material while preserving the core essence, even at times making some poetic changes and adjustments to enhance and evolve the meaning and to induce some basic added value.

There are some poems included within this book that were originally written in English which I have not translated into Persian as I sensed that this would not contribute to the significance of the finished work, with the exception of one poem titled: Of The Path.

I should also indicate that in my opinion not all of my works are of significant artistic value, and I only praise poetry which flows out without the slightest contemplation within the artist’s absence of consciousness, where his words take form in some distant dry blazing fields with the burning fists of it’s flames flickering towards the heavens in destructive protest, or by a tranquil oasis spring where the deer of innocence gather to revive their body and spirit seeking refuge from fierce merciless predators, or in the dark depths of some unexplored jungle with juicy exotic fruits yet to be tasted by man, and or upon the thrashing stormy waves of some lost savage sea attempting to infringe the known shores
