On My Closed Eyes

You rock me and quiet me.

Draw me and push me back.

When you have borne the diary of our history

into a waiting moment, you pause in stillness.

A sacrament is bestowed with your tongue on my

closed eyes;

on my arching brow which waits for the blessing.

This cool river of interpretation

flattens the waving grasses growing beneath the water.

The curve of your back over my body

describes the waxing moon.

I drive your horses.

When I’m done, they’re a lathered herd of mares

pushing out their foggy breath

like a freight train on a cold morning.

I divide in two, then as you watch me, as you hold me,

I become invisible and burst through your body

like summer’s heat lightning in your brain.
