2. The Way We Think
Not all of us think in the same way; people have different personalities. But anyone, regardless of background, may gain from these principles in one way or another. The job- hunting procedures covered throughout this book can be adapted to suit both you and your potential employers´ needs. So long as one doesn’t deviate too far from the methodology, a successful job search is inevitable.
It is important to learn how to use the energy needed in your job search. Positive thoughts will create productivity, whereas blaming, criticising or arguing with people are negative ways of utilising energy. Instead, whenever a problem arises, deal with it rather than pointing the finger. Avoid harsh self-appraisals - the damage has been done - look to the future and learn from the experience. The important thing is to learn from past mistakes in order to avoid repeating them in the future. You don’t need to feel disillusioned or ashamed of yourself for having made a mistake; none of us are perfect, after all.
In the same way that people have different personalities, there are also different attitudes to work that one can learn from. In Japan, for instance, there is a very high-disciplined attitude towards work. Japanese workers seldom miss project deadlines. Unfinished work is finished outside of office hours, and if a project is completed early, the next one is quickly started. Adopting this attitude will give the impression that you are an efficient and dedicated worker. After all, it’s not necessarily overtime workers who are rewarded with promotions, but those who are well organized and productive. However, it is important to remember to have a good work/life balance.
If you believe in luck, pretend not to. If you choose to believe in luck, then the logical conclusion is that one has to be lucky to succeed. For those that don’t, it’s only a matter of time before they achieve their success. Jack, generally didn’t believe in luck, but if he had the tendency to do so, he would act as if he was one of the luckiest people around. As an indirect result, he received numerous job offers.
Jack knew he was successful in finding employment, so he wanted to help others and decided to place an advert in his local paper:

A few days later he received a call, and arranged to meet his first student: Maria.
Maria: So do you have a job for me?
Jack: No, but I do offer expert advice.
Maria: Great! I don’t seem to have any luck in job interviews, what advice are you able to give me?
Jack: Putting it in a nutshell, you just need to know how to answer the following two questions:
How will the company benefit from you?
How will you benefit from the company?
Maria: Oh, I know all this already. Thanks anyway.
Maria’s attitude was flippant, but is not an uncommon one among job seekers. Although she thought she knew the answers to Jack’s two questions, had she really been confident in her answers to these questions she would have been more successful in her interviews. Give these two questions a lot of attention; they are the key to your success and confidence in job hunting.
The way you think determines your success. If you think it’s easy to become successful in your job search, or even make-believe that it is easy, it may well become so. Believe you deserve more than the average person and you will achieve more than the average person. Looking for a job can be a pain or it can be a pleasurable experience; it depends upon the manner in which you perceive the task of job hunting.
3. Goal Setting
Job hunting can take as little as a day; or, it can take a week, several weeks or even several months. It all depends on how you think, what you expect, and the procedures you use. It will obviously take longer to get a job where the employer’s recruitment procedures tend to be lengthier. E.g., a qualified nurse seeking employment in the public sector will have to go through all the appropriate channels. You might then ask yourself if it is possible for her to get a job in 24 hours. Where recruitment procedures are strict, after reading this book, you will learn how to substantially speed up the recruitment process.
It is important to set goals because doing so speeds up processes. Make a list of tasks that need to be completed in order for your goal to be achieved. A goal set by a pessimist might be something like ‘This month I will arrange three interviews and just maybe I’ll succeed in one of them’.
