Breeze the Mermaid Iii - Sylvia Fraley

    Chapter 1

Several years have passed since the Tridon had been shrunk down to almost nothing and dropped into a bottle. Up until now, Neptune’s entire underwater kingdom had been at peace…but that peace was not to last. Breeze and Alex finally had time to enjoy each other and explore the endless wonders to be found deep down in the ocean. It was but a year after the Tridon was dropped into a bottle that Stormy was born.

Because she was born during a terrible storm at sea, Stormy was a fitting name for the inquisitive little mermaid. Like her mother, Breeze, she was adventurous and mischievous and stayed just on the edge of trouble most of the time. She was not like the other mermaid children who were happy just to play with each other. She loved to venture away.

Sometimes, Stormy would play with the sand crabs on the shore and sometimes, she would watch the human children as they played. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, and at just the right moment, she would conjure up her land legs and slowly saunter over to where the human children were. She would walk right into the group as if to join them and then take their toys and run toward the ocean. Stormy always giggled to herself as she looked back to make sure she was being pursued. Once in the water, she began acting like she was drowning and would start waving her arms and gasping for breath and then slowly sunk down into the sea. Always, the coast guard was called to the scene but they never were able to find the little girl that disappeared into the sea.

Today was much like all the others. Stormy spent the morning pestering her parents, Breeze and Alex to let her play in the sand on the shore and maybe watch human children while they played. Remembering incidents from her own past, Breeze always tried to pick a remote beach for her to play on that was not frequented by many humans. She always kept some human clothes that were sealed in a plastic bag, packed for Stormy to wear. Breeze always wanted to avoid undue attention from any children that may be playing on the beach. Today, she dressed Stormy in a little pink sun dress with pretty red flowers on it; made sure she had conjured up her land legs and then gave her a bucket and shovel. After looking around the area to make sure it was safe to play on, Breeze gave Stormy a big kiss on the cheek. The only people on the beach were a grown up group of men that were playing volley ball and they were a good enough distance away. She and Alex felt assured that all would be okay and decided to take a short swim together, maybe even spend some time playing with the dolphins.

Stormy watched as her folks swam off into the sea. She was about to turn her head and get on with the business of playing in the sand with her little bucket and shovel when something unusual caught her eye. She gazed hard into the water. Yes! There was an unusual looking bottle bobbing up and down and it was drifting its way toward the shore. It was drifting right towards where she was standing. Stormy watched the bottle for some time as it got closer and closer. Not wanting to draw attention to herself, she waited until it floated close enough to where she could easily wade out and grab it.

Stormy pulled the bottle out of the water. As she held it in her hand, she noticed that this bottle was very different from any other bottle she had ever seen or had. There was a strand of sea weed that had draped itself over the neck and down the sides. A big smile came on Stormy’s face as she held the bottle out at arm’s length to examine it. She found the bottle! The bottle was now hers and that sea weed did not belong on it. Holding the bottle firmly with one hand, she tore the sea weed off with the other and threw it down onto the beach, watching as it landed in the sand close to her bucket. She then turned her head back to look at her prize bottle. Stormy couldn’t believe what she was seeing. There was an ugly little creature sitting inside. That creature had its hands pressed against the inside of the glass and was glaring right into her eyes.

Yuck! She exclaimed out loud as she shook the bottle. You do not belong in my bottle! … And you are getting out of there!

The creature inside seemed to know what she was saying because it immediately stood up, turned around to face her, and again lifted up its arms up and pressed its hands against the inside of the bottle. The creature was standing there, glaring right into her eyes. Stormy wanted no part of this ugly little beast. She tried to open the bottle but the lid was screwed on so tight she could not budge it. Again, she shook the bottle and then held it up close to her face to get a better look at the little creature inside. The creature again came to a standing position, put its hands on the inside of the bottle and stood there, glaring at her. For a brief moment, Stormy thought to call out to her mother, Breeze or maybe her father, Alex for help in opening the bottle. Somehow, that just did not feel like it would be a good idea. They might take the bottle away from her. She could hit the bottle with a rock, but that was a bad idea too because then it would break and be ruined.

Almost directly behind her; there were some larger male humans throwing a ball back and forth over a net. Yes! She thought. I will get one of them to open this for me. Running up to one of them, she smiled great big and asked. Mister! Could you open this for me? My friend is inside and I can’t get him out.

What have you got there little girl? The man questioned. What is that?

Stormy held the bottle out at arm’s length to show the man.

I’ve never seen anything like this before. He exclaimed. .…And it’s alive!"

The man turned to Stormy, looked sternly into her eyes and asked, Why did you put this little creature in that bottle? Don’t you know he won’t be able to breath in there? He’ll die if you don’t let him out!

Those last two statements made Stormy angry. She definitely wasn’t worried about the ugly little creature inside that bottle. All she wanted was her bottle…EMPTY. Mister! Stormy said as she looked up at the man. Mister! I didn’t put the little guy in there. I found him that way. She pointed to the ocean. That bottle was floating way out there in the water and I just waded out and picked it up. She thought for a moment and then continued. I think it would be a good idea to let that …that what ever it is out of the bottle too… but I can’t open the lid. With a big smile, she handed the bottle to the man. Here! Could you open it for me…or…could you just loosen the lid a little so I can open it and dump the little creature out on the ground and let it go free? I just love doing stuff like that!

The man looked into Stormy’s big eyes, saw her cute smile, kneeled down in the sand so he was more Stormy’s size and answered. Sure! I’ll do that for you…but you’ll have to turn him loose right away. Don’t let him stay in there very long or else he will die! The man eyed the bottle intently and then again asked. "What kind of creature is that? I’ve never seen anything like it before.

I don’t know. Stormy answered. "…But it’s kind of ugly, don’t you think?"

The man didn’t answer her question. He looked intently at the creature in the bottle and then at Stormy and again said. Be sure you let it out of the bottle right away!

Oh! I will! I will! Stormy answered with excitement in her voice. You can watch me do it if you want.

I don’t have to do that! The man answered. In a hurry to get back to his volley ball game, he gave the bottle’s lid a light twist. Nothing happened. He twisted with all his might and still the cap didn’t come off. He looked toward the volley ball game he had been playing and yelled to his comrade. Hey! Jake! You’re strong! Can you get this lid off?

Yeah! Sure! Sure! I can get it off. Give me that! Jake said in a loud voice as he came lumbering over. You’re sure taking your sweet time with this. We’re in the middle of a game, you know. He looked down at Stormy, stretched out his hand and smiled. Here! Let me see that, little girl. I’ll open it for you! …And he did. He loosened the cap with one swift twist and was about to take it all the way off when Stormy reached out and put her hand on his.

Can you leave the lid on just a little so I can be the one to let him out? Stormy smiled as she looked up at the man with her big eyes.

Here you go, little lady. Jake smiled back. My pleasure!

The man that was originally trying to take the lid off Stormy’s bottle became upset with Jake’s comment about him taking his sweet time. He was trying to do a good deed helping the little girl. The comment started an argument that brought their volleyball game to an abrupt end and they all left the area.

Humph! Stormy thought as she listened to their confrontation and watched while they all got into their cars and drove off in a huff. Humans sure do get angry easy.

Clutching the bottle tightly in her hand, Stormy walked back to where the waves were barely washing over her feet and sat down. She completely forgot about the pretty little pink dress Breeze had put on her and began to conjure up her tail.

Want you out of my bottle, little monster! She exclaimed as she unscrewed the lid the rest of the way off.

    Chapter 2

Happy to smell fresh air again, the Tridon roared as loud as he could and raised his arms toward the top of the bottle.

Because the Tridon was so small, the sound he made was barely audible to Stormy. In fact, she ignored the sound completely. Looking at the little Tridon she smiled and said. Now, you ugly little monster; you can just get lost! She smiled as she turned the bottle upside down and began shaking it vigorously.

The Tridon plopped into the sand and Stormy put her pretty bottle into the little red bucket. Thinking no more about the ugly little monster she’d freed from the bottle, she continued playing in the sand. She filled the bucket with sand several times and then turned it over to make images. After a short time, she looked around at all the upside down bucket molds of sand and decided she was tired of doing that. Setting the basket aside, she started filling the bottle with sand and then emptying it onto the bucket images. This she did several times until she felt something hurting her leg. Looking down, she saw it was the ugly little creature she’d just let out of the bottle. Hey! You little Monster! She yelled. I’ll teach you to hurt me! I’m the one that let you out of that bottle, and I can put you right back into that bottle. You get away from me right now…or I will put you back into that bottle!

The Tridon didn’t like that statement at all and he growled again. This time he pointed to Stormy’s tail before he pinched it. He knew she was a mermaid that could get human legs. He’d seen her with human legs and watched as she conjured up her mermaid tail. He had also watched from the bottle when Breeze and Alex left Stormy alone to play. It had been years since he had been put in that bottle but he still wanted that mermaid tail. He looked up at Stormy and pinched her tail again.

You’re not going to quit, are you? Stormy yelled. I’ll fix you, you ugly little monster! She picked up her shovel, conjured up her land legs and then stood up and began to hit the Tridon over the head with the shovel. Hmmm, She muttered. With a frown on her face, Stormy squinted her eyes at the Tridon and yelled. Hitting you just isn’t good enough. You ugly little thing. She reached out to grab the little Tridon but he was too fast for her so she began to stab at him with the sharp end of her little shovel. At first, she kept missing him. As time passed, in anger she began wildly poking the flat end of the little shovel into the sand. Finally the edge of it caught the Tridon and cut off one of his legs. A-Ha! Stormy exclaimed. I’ve got you now, you ugly little monster! With that remark, she angrily proceeded to chop him into as many little pieces as she could. In a fit of anger, she started picking up the pieces and throwing them here and there on the beach and as far out into ocean as she could.

About that time, Breeze and Alex swam toward the shore and saw Stormy wildly jabbing at the sand. Breeze asked, "What are you doing, Stormy? Have you been having fun?" As she came closer, Breeze noticed the bottle that was sitting in Stormy’s little red bucket and quickly conjured up her land legs. What are you throwing into the ocean? Where did you get this bottle?

Alex was right behind Breeze and also conjured up his land legs. He bent over and picked up the empty bottle just as Stormy threw the last little pieces of the Tridon’s body into the ocean. With a sad look in his eyes, Alex looked at Breeze and said. Breeze! My love. I think we’re in for some big trouble.

Alex held the bottle right in front of Stormy’s face and put his other hand on her shoulder. "Stormy!" He sighed. I really wish you hadn’t done what I think you just did! You chopped that little creature all up … Into little pieces. Didn’t you? I wish you hadn’t done that. You have no idea what you just did. I wish there was some way to pick up all the pieces and put them back together again so we could stuff that little creature right back into this bottle.

Okay! I’ll fix that! Stormy smiled happily. "Watch this! She yelled as she ran back and forth picking up the little parts. I’ll show you! I’ll put that little monster all back together! …And then you can put him back in the bottle."

Both Breeze and Alex reached out and tried to stop her but she had already gathered up some of the pieces that were laying on the beach. With a big smile on her face, Stormy looked in their eyes, reached into the bucket, grabbed what pieces were in there and stuffed them in one of her pockets.

Alex just happened to glance out to sea at that moment. "You stay here, Stormy! Alex yelled. I see something out there I don’t think I’m going to like!

He turned to Breeze and exclaimed. "Breeze! Look! Look real close at the chopped up Tridon pieces Stormy threw into the water. I…I think each one of them is growing new parts. Before we know it, I think we’re going to have a lot of ugly little Tridons running around with complete bodies. We have to collect every little body scrap Stormy chopped up …And in a hurry, and RIGHT NOW! … Before they do what I think they’re going to do. They’re doing it right now! Look at that one, Breeze. I can see the little arms and legs growing even as we speak."

Breeze took a close look at the little chopped up pieces and said You’re right, Alex. She didn’t hesitate for a minute and was in the water almost before Alex finished speaking grabbing up every piece of the little Tridon she could.

While Breeze and Alex were swimming around in the ocean trying to gather up all the Tridon’s parts, Stormy was busy stealing boxes of cookies from the group of human children that had just come onto the beach. The cookies were the kind that had frosting in the middle. She had watched those children many times as they ate and played with their cookies. The children were always taking them apart and putting them back together again. Stormy called the white stuff cookie-glue …And that is what she was going to put the Tridon back together with. ..COOKIE GLUE! It didn’t take her long to take all of the cookie glue out of the middle of the cookies she had stolen. There were a lot of cookies, several boxes full of them.

Stormy was in the process of making a sticky ball out of the white stuff when she saw something else that caught her eye. Down the beach, a good distance from where she was, she noticed a lady that was just starting to put some white stuff on top of a big round thing that looked like it would be good to eat. Her children were playing there as well. The white stuff looked just like the cookie dough that came from between those cookies and there was a lot of it. She just had to have it.

Stormy knew she had to create some kind of diversion to get it so she started running toward the group crying. The lady that was just starting to frost the cake stopped what she was doing. What the lady saw was a little girl, all alone on the beach that may be lost. She left the cake and the open cans of frosting on the table and started walking towards Stormy.

Stormy took full advantage of the situation. When the lady got close, she started crying all the harder. The lady put her arms around Stormy and took her to where the cake was waiting to be decorated and then started asking questions, what her name was, where she was from, where her parents were…

I’m really hungry. Stormy cried. "My name is Stormy and I have been here all day long. My mother and father went swimming in that big
