    Eyes of Time

    By Dewey Starbuck

If there were a beginning, then there will be an end, but when. Or is everything forever. If everything is forever, it is time that changes. So as time changes, we change.

If there were a beginning, when is the end? If the end is near, do we have enough time to do something? Or is time forever, and it is the Earth and Humans that have a beginning and an end.

Or is it that Humans travel through time, living one life at a time.

    Atlantis

Our story starts, not all together begins, in Atlantis. Our Hero, Hector, is a mild mannered office clerk working for the government. He also spends time at the Arena with his horses. He has a nice house, a lovely wife, and two kids.

They live in Avalon, a suburb of Atlantis, on a quiet street, on the side of the hill, over-looking the bay. All in all, they have a really nice life; much like you and I have today, the only difference is, 13,000 years.

The city of Atlantis was huge, even for today’s standards. In the center were temples and other official buildings. Parallel streets formed circles around the center, with all other larger diagonal streets leading too or away from the center of the city.

Houses lined all of the outlying streets with markets at almost every large intersection. Many Temples were made available for worship on a daily or weekly basis.

On the surface, a scene of peace and tranquility abound throughout the whole land. But underneath, literally, things are not so good. For many years there have been earthquakes and volcanic eruptions across the entire nation. Government officials have been meeting for many years now, in hopes of finding a solution to their problems. The future does not look good for the people of Atlantis.

We find our Hero at work Monday morning talking to another clerk, Uri his friend.

Did you hear of the two volcanoes’ that went off this weekend in the north," asks Uri.

Yes I did, very sad all those people who were living there and such beautiful houses, and live stock. I hear the council is having a special meeting this morning to talk about the catastrophic occurrences we have seen lately, reply’s Hector.

Will you be going to the meeting asks Uri.

Yes, my council member is going Hector replies. I will have to take notes.

My boss left yesterday to visit the damaged areas and to bring back a report to present to the council. says Uri. But I will be in the audience.

Later that morning there was much excitement as the council members were entering the Great Hall, and the gallery was filling to capacity with spectators. Shaped like an amphitheater, in the center of the Hall were six chairs on one side of a huge seat, and six on the other, facing the audience. The scribes were seated behind them, at a lower level. Twelve men in shining white robes, and one man in a florescent green robe were seated and waiting for the noisy crowd to subside.

We are gathered here today to give remembrance to the loved ones we have lost to yet another horrendous act of nature, started the Elder Councilman, and to discuss our plans for the very near future. It is no secret that our world is slowly falling apart, and that someday soon, Atlantis herself will sink into the ocean. For thousands of years we have lived and flourished here, as men and women, and as children of the Sun. We have prospered and evolved as men and women in both mind and body. Our Grandfathers must be proud of us.

And yet as strong and powerful as we are as men, we cannot stop the inevitable future that nature has in store for us. Beneath the surface of Atlantis, and throughout the whole nation are huge volcanoes that will soon erupt, endangering all who live here. For months now our council and geologists have been meeting to come up with a solution. There is only one solution. This is what we have decided.

Today I stand before you not as your Elder, but as your brother. The geologists are absolutely positive that in the very near future, more volcanoes will erupt, causing even greater devastation than now. Therefore, the council and I have decided that our carpenters will build great ships so the citizens of Atlantis can travel to other lands in the preservation of our people, our customs and our ways. My only concern is for the safety of our children, their parents, and all who wish to leave this place before the impending doom. For those who wish to leave, we will try and make your voyage as comfortable as possible. I will be staying here with those who wish to stay.

And as for the Sacred Crystal Skulls that were brought here by our forefathers thousands of years ago, we have decided that two will be placed aboard six of the ships, and the thirteenth one, the most powerful of all, shall remain here in Atlantis, with me, never to be seen again. The ships’ captains will keep the other skulls safe until such time that temples have been built for them. I thank you, brothers and sisters, and go in Peace.

Later that day, Hector and Uri were having lunch when Hector says my wife and I have decided to go on a ship that will be going to the south and west. Her mother is staying, but Katrina is bringing her younger sister, Laili, at her mother’s request. Most of the people going are younger ones who want to save their children. And the older people are staying.

They say there are lands to the south and west of here with white sandy beaches. A tropical paradise with tall palm trees. This is where Katrina and I want to go. My brother and his wife and her family are going on a ship that will be traveling to the north and west. Another ship is said to be going due south in search of new lands.

That afternoon Uri goes to the Temple for his studies in Ancient Civilizations. He is very interested in the Lumerians and the Islands of Mu. Mu was said to be located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of what is now India and the Philippines. It sank, ironically, some 13,000 years ago according to Uri’s history books. He has a theory that along with coming to Atlantis back then, the Lumerians traveled to nearby India and other regions.

It is said in his studies that aliens visited Mu a long time ago, Martians and Sumerians. Sumerians were from a 10th planet that only orbits around the sun once every 26,000 years. They were supposed to have brought the skulls to Atlantis. They fell in love with earthling women, and both started super human races. These two races were opposed to one another so much; they built a wall down the middle of the island, and lived in two different, separate ways.

In his studies Uri learns that the Martians were a mean and cruel race, lustful dishonest thieves. On the other hand, the Sumerians were a peaceful, kindhearted people who lived off the land and in harmony with one another and with nature.

Near the end, the Sumerians built great ships and sailed away from Mu. They watched as Mu sank into the Pacific Ocean, along with the pesky Martians. It is said that the Sumerians later founded Atlantis, and kept the skulls in what is now the city of Atlantis, where they are today. They would not allow the surviving Martians to live on their Island paradise.

He hopes someday to explore other lands in search of evidence of the Lumerians and Sumerians. But now he must choose between friendship and his own destiny.

But I am so afraid, Katrina tells her husband. The ocean is so deadly, it has swallowed so many people already, and I do not want to add to its thirst.

But the carpenters are building huge ships that they say cannot sink, he replies. They have created new thin plasters that will withstand water.

Can we visit the ship yards? she asks. I want to see this new plaster.

The next morning before going shopping at the plaza, Hector takes his wife to the ship yard. She watches as the men cut out huge beams from whole trees and sees how the huge frame of the ship is constructed. Moving along they come to the end of the line where the plaster is applied before being rolled into the bay. She learns that it is called Farrow Cement, and is used only in making ships waterproof.

Satisfied now, my dear, he asks.

Yes, she replies. How many people will fit in these huge ships? she asks.

Hectors friend Neo was a carpenter and a foreman on one of the crews explains. About 400 people will have rooms ranging from singles to whole families. There will be enough supplies and water to last for one year. There is a galley that seats 100 people at a time. There is also a library and a sauna. A green house on the deck will grow fresh fruit and vegetables, and the fruit trees can be transplanted after we reach our final destination.

Katrina is amazed at the thought and care that has gone into the planning of such a huge undertaking. The Elders must be very concerned about our safety and well being, she thinks.

Katrina was a member of a group called, Sisters of the Earth. They tended gardens and orchards, and were overseers of the harvesting and storing of food. Their other duties were with the Temple and caring for the Priests. She was glad that some of her fraternal sisters would be on her ship. And each ship did have Priests, and Councilmen, and carpenters, along with people from all walks of life. Each ship is a colony of people within itself, sailing into the unknown.

At home Hector and Katrina were packing and making preparations for their upcoming voyage. Excitement filled the air. Katrina was busy packing warm and cold weather clothes for the children, as she did not know what to expect. Each family was allowed a specific amount of weigh for belongings, but the limit was more than they needed. Later she was directed to the ship they would be using, and she was able to start loading their belongings on board.

As the day was approaching for the ships to embark on their separate voyages, more volcanoes and earthquakes erupted leaving parts of the city in rubble. The Elders urged the construction crews to hurry, as they feared all of their work may be in vain.

High above the ships looking down, Katrina and her sister, Laili, along with other passengers, could be seen scurrying like tiny ants back and forth from the ships tied to the docks. Soon the ships were full, and a departure day was chosen. Each ship would leave an hour apart, so as to avoid collisions in the harbor.

Each ship had many sails, some big for open seas and some smaller for maneuvering. There was a gigantic rudder at the back of the ship for steering. On deck were big fans that would pump fresh air into the lower levels as the ship sailed forward.

The docks were filled to capacity with people boarding ships, and loved ones saying their final farewell to one another. As the plank was pulled onto the ship, smaller boats rowed the huge ship out into the bay. Tears filled the faces of all who were there.

As their ship sailed out into the harbor, Hector, Katrina, and Laili stood on deck with many other passengers to watch as their great island slowly disappeared on the horizon. A look of amazement filled their faces, along with a fear of the unknown.

Uri had chosen to go on another ship that would be sailing south and east, in the direction of the Indies, a place he had longed to explore.

It is done said Hector. For better or for worse, we have sealed our fate, and our children will write tales of this day.

We did this SO our children could write tales of today. says Katrina jokingly. We would have all perished for sure if we had stayed.

I hope Uri finds what he is looking for, says Hector. And I hope we find what we are looking for, too.

What is it you are looking for, my dear, asks Hector.

Well, ah, I guess all I really want is to be happy, and to be with you, and to watch our children grow up to be good people, and to someday play with our grandchildren. She replies.

With you as their mother, they will surely make good people, and wonderful parents, Hector softly replies.

You are the kindest, sweetest man I have ever known, she says. She turns and steps closer and stands in front of him. They embrace for a moment, and soon their lips meet. They kiss one another as for the first time, a kiss they had not felt since their first date. And indeed it was the first time anyone had ever kissed on the deck of such a huge ship, with the ocean surrounding them, sailing into a new adventure.

I have some good news for you, she tells him. My mother told me before I left that I may be expecting a new born child, she says with a glowing smile.

That would explain the reason why I see such a wonderful glow radiating from you, he tells her.

I know of no other women who are expecting to give birth soon, so our child may be the first born in our new home land, she tells him.

He kneels down and puts his ear up to her stomach, hoping to hear something. She laughs and tells him he can’t hear anything, yet. So he turns his head and softly kisses her stomach while wrapping his arms around her back and embraces her.

Yes, but we can start now by showing the love we have for our next child, He says.

A few days into the voyage, a huge tidal wave approached from the rear of the ship, almost capsizing it. The ship was lifted partially out of the water, but was able to withstand the tremendous force from the huge wave. Shortly thereafter, the Captain announced that Atlantis had met her doom, and was no more the center of the world, but now lay at the bottom of the ocean. And that he knew of some islands not so far away that was uninhabited. He assured everyone that they were safe now, and to enjoy the rest of the voyage.

The days on board passed slowly for the passengers of the floating colony. But just being lazy felt good after being so busy over the past few weeks. Their sorrow for the loss of their loved ones was becoming less and less each day. They were instead anxious and pondering what lies ahead of them.

    Chapter Two

    A New Land

A few weeks later, snow capped mountains could be seen in the far distance. As the ship approached, it sailed up and down the coast in search of a suitable place to land. The next day a bay was found that would be a good place to anchor the ship. A huge water fall could be seen in the distance, and a river flowed down to the bay bringing a fresh supply of water.

That night everyone stayed on board, wondering what tomorrow would bring. Was this new land home to horrible tribes, who were rumored to eat human beings? Was there any eatable fruit?

As it turned out, the entire region was totally uninhabited and an endless supply of fresh water flowed down from the nearby mountains. There were some strange fruit trees, but the fruit on them was safe to eat and very tasty. This would make a wonderful place for the descendents of Atlantis to begin a new life, and to watch their children grow in peace and harmony.

The next morning Hector, Katrina, her sister, Laili, and their two children boarded a small row boat that takes them ashore. Excitement runs through their veins, as they take their first steps on the beach of their new home.

The white sandy beaches of modern day Costa Rica are as white now as they were then. A feeling of joy and amazement filled each person arriving at the beach. The variety and size of the beautifully colored birds astounded them. The fresh fruit was growing every-where right along the beach!

Soon Neo and Saffron were arriving at the beach along with their two young boys. There was no way they were able to keep the children from splashing in the waters of the soft gentle tides. Soon the women and children were running ahead, joyously dancing in the crystal clear waves.

The two men slowly walked behind the women and children, and as they watched them all, a feeling joy and contentment filled their hearts. This was their new home, almost a dream come true for some, while for others it was a new adventure,
