    About the Book

    Dedication

    I would like to dedicate this book, first and foremost, to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, my late parents who brought me into this world, my late brother Stephen and to my sister Patricia.

    A special dedication to my late grandson,LaRon Roberts, who gave me so much encouragement when he was battling cancer.

    I also dedicate this book to my three beautiful daughters, (Tijuana, Dorothy and Natasha), who had to put up with me when I went through one extreme to another and fussed with them when I thought they needed it. I know sometimes they might think that I don’t love them but I do and always will.

    Last but not least, I dedicate this book to my grandchildren who I hope will read this book and don’t make the mistakes that I had made. I love you all.

    Acknowledgement

    I want to thank my two best friends Val Montgomery and Inez Turpin, who stuck by me day after day, month after month and year after year, when there were times I felt like giving up and you stuck by me like a sister. You both kept pushing me to give birth to this book. I love you guys so much and thank you.

    I would like to acknowledge Apostles Michael and Stacie Prince, who are not just my pastors but who are my dear childhood friends. I appreciate the love and compassion that you both have. Pastor Stacie, if it wasn’t for you witnessing to me and opening the door for me to come to Christ, I don’t know where I would be. I love you both.

    There’s one special person I would like to acknowledge, that is Rev. Mother Diane Duke. You have been like a mother and sister to me. You have made me feel special in a lot of ways. You have given me a lot of encouragement with words of wisdom. You have taught me to let my light shine and not to think about what other people have to say about me. You have told me to press on, so I’m pressing on. I applaud you Mother Duke and I love you.

    Preface

    Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

    To everything there is a season,

    A time for every purpose under heaven

    A time to be born, And a time to die;

    A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted

    A time to kill, And a time to heal;

    A time to break down, And a time to build up

    A time to weep, And a time to laugh;

    A time to mourn, And a time to dance

    A time to cast away stones; A time to embrace,

    And a time to refrain from embracing

    A time to gain, And a time to lose;

    A time to keep, And a time to throw away

    A time to tear, And a time to sew;

    A time to keep silence, And a time to speak

    A time to love, And a time to hate;

    A time of war, And a time of peace.

    In The Beginning

    My life’s journey goes back to my grandmother and grandfather. In the 1800’s granddad lived on a plantation in the south named Guess. He ran away to keep from being killed by the slave owner because he was passing love letters between a slave and a white man. Granddad came to Long Island, New York by boat and gave himself the surname of Henry, William Henry. I was told he was about 7 feet tall wearing a miraculous shoe size 15. One hand was large enough to hold an infant baby. While here on Long Island, he met my grandmother, Bertha Valentine. Grandma was a short Shinnacock Indian woman who fell in love with my grandfather. Because of this union, she was banned from the reservation. They lived in Old Westbury where granddad had a small fruit and vegetable store on Jericho Turnpike.

    While living in Old Westbury, grandma had five children, two daughters and three sons. One of the sons became my father, Stephen Valentine Henry. I don’t remember my grandfather because I believe he died either before I was born or when I was an infant. One of my aunts died giving birth to a baby girl, so I never saw her. When daddy reached his young adult years, he traveled to upstate New York where he met my mother, Lillian Elberta Manning. During the late thirties and early forties it seemed to be the fashion of black men wanting to date white women or light skin black women. Well, don’t you know that mommy and daddy fell into this category. I don’t remember my grandparents on my mother’s side of the family, but I was told that they visited us maybe twice. Anyway, my mother’s parents didn’t like the idea of my father wanting to marry my mother, for one thing, my father was a black man and another, I think, was that mommy was the only child, but they didn’t stop it. My grandmother on my mother’s side of the family used to read tea leaves for people. I guess you would call her a fortune teller. Once they got married, daddy brought mommy back to New York. They lived in Harlem, and then moved to Westbury. My relatives on my father’s side of the family weren’t too happy about this marriage either. All the family reunions that my relatives had didn’t include our family because of the interracial marriage. From these two wonderful parents became I being born on April 16, 1950. They named me Lorraine Susan Henry. I was the youngest sibling of three, one sister and one brother.

    Looking back during the fifties was pretty much good. When I say good, I mean the economy wasn’t like it is today. When I think about
