    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

One day, the Headline of the Racine Journal-Times daily newspaper read The Kirks Named Non-Traditional Family of the Year. I was so happy to hear that my family had been chosen for this valuable award. Each year, The Racine Journal-Times seeks nominations for outstanding Parents, and Families, from the Community. The nominations could come from anyone. The nominations would be judged by certain standards and a Winner would be chosen, The Winners and their families were honored for their Contributions, at an awards Banquet. My neighbor, Mr. Baba, whom I have known for 20 years, recommended me for this award. He, also, has convinced me to write this book. This book covers my life roles as Daughter, wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Mr. Baba has passed away, but leaves me with many fond Memories of his encouraging talks. I acknowledge his impact on this finished work.

    PREFACE

Having seen and read many books on Life experiences and the struggles that many people endure to survive; started me thinking about my life. And the strong woman that I have become because of my struggles. A songwriter once said Struggles only come to make you strong. truer words have never been spoken. As I look back over my life, each struggle or experience was a part of strengthening my heart, my mind, my body and my soul. Overcoming the struggle gave me strength and a sense of power; especially when I yielded to the power of God.

Although at times, I didn’t feel strong often wondering why me. I know that God had His hands on my life. Scripture says: For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you. plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 I am amazed at the powerful impact each struggle has had on me; and the strength I received from it. This power served to make each additional struggle a little less overwhelming, for me. The strength I received, to endure a life time of struggles, came only from God. I truly know the power of a struggling woman.

It was with unexpected pleasure that my family was nominated for and won the Non-traditional Family of the Year award in 2002. Truly God has been good to me.

I hope this book will allow other women to see that they are not the only ones to feel or have felt overwhelmed, at times. Regardless of your age, or what you are going through, remember this to shall pass. You will gain power from your struggle ,hang in there!

    MY HOME

In the red hills of Mississippi, Birds sing early in the morning, snakes in the midday and Lighting bugs hum through the night. We lived in the country. About a half mile from our house, was a road to the city; on this road was a huge bridge. The bridge ran across a creek. This creek is where I and everyone from my Church were baptized.

My parents, Alphonso Price and Merida Ethel Mae Cole were married
