A Passage from Afar features a compilation of poetic pieces captured over a one year period of my life. The setting is Australia. This book will take you through the story of one persons life and one persons perspective. The poems compiled reflect the solitary moments of my souls poetic journey travelling around the vast continent of Terra Australis. With poetic eyes and a writers heart I took lifes experiences and wrote about them as I lived them.

Bradley J Barnes

Bradley J Barnes is a new author and was born in Portsmouth on August 1st 1970. He went to local schools. After leaving school he completed a five year apprenticeship in joinery. Disillusioned with wood he undertook a degree graduating from the University of Portsmouth with a B.A. (Hons) in Economic History. He was a member of the Royal Naval Reserves for many years but it is in poetry that he finds his favourite medium of expression. He is interested in everything and has a decade of unfinished projects to complete. The author is currently a civil servant. Rachel Wellstead is new to formal illustration but has drawn and painted for her own pleasure since childhood. She was born in Liss on October 22nd 1973 and went to local schools. After leaving school, with varying degrees of success and an A level in art, she worked in various unexciting jobs, until deciding that teaching might not be for her. She graduated from University College Chichester with a B.A (Hons) in English and followed it up with a Post Graduate Teaching Degree. Following a year teaching, a son and a slightly uncomfortable divorce, she finally settled into her current profession of Youth Work. Her heart lies with the artistic side of life, in poetry, prose, Shakespeare and anything beautiful to the eye or ear. She met the author of this book whilst learning to dance – a kindred spirit and a friend. A Passage from Afar is the first joint venture between these two artists.

A Poem for a Lonely Night

Sitting lonely in the night

Thoughts conducted by candlelight,

A light that flickers pure as gold

Which leaves you calm complete and whole,

Stare stare, into God’s eye

Life for once will pass you by.

Sitting lonely in the night

Time ticks by out of sight,

The night has come to cleanse the day

To give it rest and hide its ray,

Forgive life’s trouble and her pains

Cast them off while you remain.

Sitting lonely in the night

You’re inner Soul burning bright,

The candlelight has gone out

The room is dark, you have no doubt,

Sleep sleep, call the ghosts of time

As you leave the earth for one last time.

The Torch of Love

The Torch of Love is a burning flame

That burns so bright it consumes all pain,

Light the torch, it will burn bright

A burning flame, day and night.

Ignorance is Bliss

God said, ‘Can’t you see the stars!’

‘Look at the beauty, not just the scars’,

‘And tell me truly, children of earth’

‘Is that too much to ask for birth!’

Father’s Prayer

His voice buried beyond in dreams

Where two are one in beauty serene,

A different world, he awaits me now

As we now know the Divide so well.
