Dedication
My inspiration for writing this book came from my parents, Frankie and Lyla Rivas, and my brother Derrick. Through prayer, their suffering inspired and guided the writing of Disintegrating Justice. This book is dedicated to them and to everyone who has been a victim of corruption by the criminal justice system.
Psalm 59
Rescue me from my enemies, my God;
lift me out of reach of my foes.
Deliver me from evildoers;
from the bloodthirsty save me.
They have set an ambush for my life;
the powerful conspire against me.
For no offense or misdeed of mine, Lord,
for no fault they hurry to take up arms.
Come near and see my plight!
Introduction
The courts in Dona Aurora County have opened the doors to evil, letting in suffocating smoke that will not clear. If we suffer, it is because God allows it. The suffering is to make us better and bring out our best. It becomes a test of faith. I can only tell the story of what I have witnessed. I know that there are many stories about corruption in our criminal justice system that go untold. God speaks to us in various ways. We need to listen. Look into your heart with a magnifying glass. Pierce through it like a bursting ray of sunshine that beams through your soul, like the glow of a full moon, and stare at your wounds. Every wound, good or bad, is scarred and carries a part of our past. One day we will be asked to show what is inside our heart. Our scars will be revealed. The last judgment awaits us all.
Some people have wounds on their hands from working hard for their family. They sacrifice to provide for those in need. Wounds form on your feet in service to your country, for justice and for the good of others. How many of us would be proud of the wounds that we bear? Not only in life but inside the criminal justice system, some people value very little and make others pay a price.
When immense pressure builds on your shoulders, do not let it sink you under the ground like quicksand. Do not throw in the towel. Channel the stored energy into something positive. Make ready your heart, mind, and spirit; only then will your paths be made clear. I realized that I could feel sorry for my family’s struggles. It is not who I am and it is not what I was taught. Honor your father and your mother is what I remember. Dad, Mom, my brother Derrick, and victims of disintegrating justice, with this book I honor you.
Disintegrating Justice is based on factual events that happened to my twin brother, Derrick. Real names and locations have been changed. It uncovers and makes visible the corruption and hate that occur in the criminal justice system in Las Palmas, Arizona. Derrick has had to deal with officers of the court that attempted to harm and humiliate him, and inflict unspeakable emotional pain on him. They used cruel methods to bring about his downfall.
The worst murder Las Palmas has ever seen has gone unsolved. It is a quiet town with good people, a beautiful place where many people come to retire. It has been rated as one of the safest cities in the country. It is unthinkable that a mass murder would occur there. People are left to imagine what has been taking place.
The police force is united behind two leaders that have ultimate control and power over a vast majority. With their abundant resources, they have spun a web of darkness. The innocent victims are targets of what I describe as demonic justice. My brother was one of these victims. They tried to incarcerate, entrap, and degrade him, but he has now become the predator. Every unjust criminal act committed against him has been appealed, reported, and documented. Something they never expected has taken place. Derrick is using the court transcripts to prove that court officials have committed perjury, fraud, and abuse against him. Now they are faced with a dilemma on how to deal with the ricochet of the law.
I have decided to write a book about my twin brother, Derrick. Corruption needs to be exposed and talked about for many reasons. As United States citizens, we have rights. When these rights are violated, our silence or failure to act is a form of accepting the illegal deed or devious behavior. Most people are scared. Some just do not want to get involved. Others worry about what people might say or fear retaliation. The rest gossip and enjoy being spectators to what is taking place. One element is lacking in these people: the element of courage. Courage comes from the spirit. It comes from within. It means standing up for what is right, even if it means standing by yourself.
Seeing someone you care about go through the court system or a difficult divorce is tough. An imbalanced playing field with a corrupt justice system in place is not only unfair but criminal. Nobody deserves this type of cruel form of punishment from a court in the United States. This is not the intent of the United States Constitution. What we are seeing in this growing town is constitutional law being transformed in a way that would embarrass the founding fathers. Our law is not perfect, but it works better than the laws in most other countries. It is the officers of the court that bring about disgrace by implementing their own beliefs; they are the ones that are dishonorable.
Chapter One
Hatred and anger can snowball, creating an avalanche on top of those that do not abide by the law. This includes people that have taken an oath to uphold it. An oath no longer holds water in our court of law. It is nothing but a formality for judges and lawyers in our town. It is a tool that is applied only when they see fit. The law is not applied mutually. This book will reveal injustices that have taken place in Dona Aurora County in Las Palmas, Arizona. Butterfield Park, a small community outside the city limits of Las Palmas, is the staging area. An echoed voice from beyond the desert will be heard throughout Arizona. The injustice began in 2008 and continues today.
My twin brother Derrick and I were born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Las Palmas. Our grandparents, Frankie and Lyla Rivas, adopted us at birth. We refer to them as Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad are the best. People know them as Bobby and Lola. They have always loved us like their very own children, and we love them the same. They have been a blessing to us. A gift from God is the best way I can describe them. They were married for fifty-nine years, which is something to admire. It
