Turning the World Right Side Up: Claiming the Earth for Christ
()
About this ebook
During my senior year at seminary, I was substitute preaching at a small rural church in southwest Ohio on the topic: Turning the World Upside Down. Thessalonians were saying that about those first Christians. A lady greeted me after the service with the question, and a hint of desperation in her voice: Tell me, what can I do? I had no answer back then.
This book would be my answer now. Sometime after seminary, it became my passion to recover the faith and experience of New Testament Christianity. Fifty years later, after encountering Christ, serving in pastoral ministry, studying Scripture, and journaling to remember lessons God was teaching me, this book is a summary of my understanding of New Testament Christianity.
It focused on Jesus (Incarnate Lord), His word (truth), and His kingdom (limitless resources). When the church returns to that focus for determining its faith and experience, it will produce disciples, servants, and witnesses that go beyond mere church membership in todays Christianity. Then, it will learn to tap the limitless kingdom resources necessary to turn the world right side up, claim the earth for Christ, produce Christlike people, and lead the way to peace someday on earth.

Preface
Back in 1964, the Spirit wrote indelibly on my mind the words of a speaker: The renewal of the church in the future will take the shape of recovering the New Testament form of faith and experience.
During that same year, I encountered Christ as the Bible came alive and I saw Jesus as the unique God/man. Those experiences defined my Christian journey for the rest of my life. From that time forward, I went to the New Testament committed to reshape my faith and experience by what the apostles taught who were as close to Jesus (God/man) as we will ever get. I would discover the difference between Christianity when it began and as we find it twenty centuries later
Mathematics was my major in college leading to a B.S. and M.S. After entering the ministry and encountering the Lord, I went on to graduate school in Biblical studies to pursue a Ph.D. as I was planning to do in mathematics. After two years, it became clear I would not learn there the practical wisdom the apostles taught those first Christians on how to walk with Christ in their daily lives. I saw that we learn New Testament truth not by simply reading and studying but making the journey of discipleship and servanthood. The Spirit led me to return to the pastorate and shape my own life and ministry to others by what I was learning about New Testament Christianity.
Those two years did equip me with primary sources for study as well as helping me to go to the Bible in the original languages when that would help to clarify the original meaning. One invaluable study during these years consisted of examining key Greek words related to the faith and experience of the first Christians, that translate into such words as gospel, truth, new, creation, faith, justification, righteousness, sanctification, holiness, salvation, birth, perfection, appearing, coming, revelation, kingdom, calling, election, authority, power, freedom, etc. Such words may be foreign to many Christians today, but they were an integral part of the faith and experience of the first Christians. When understood, they help us appropriate God’s grace and grow in our faith as we learn to walk with Christ. By listing Paul’s letters in chronological order, and studying the words as they appear in his letters, one can then trace the spiritual progress of the first Christians as the Spirit led Paul and them from spiritual infancy to maturity. One can also observe some new words that emerge in the later epistles as well as the fulfillment of earlier expectations related to Jesus’ Return!
This book is a result of my spiritual journey, pastoral ministry, scriptural study, and journaling, the latter to help me remember the lessons the Lord was teaching me along the journey. I believe it accurately presents the faith and experience of the apostles. Their focus was on Jesus, His word, and His kingdom. This is the banner this book seeks to raise for the church today that it may awaken to its role of leading the way to claim the earth for Christ.

Introduction
Very early in my quest to read the New Testament afresh, I discovered that Jesus and the writers of the New Testament believed He would return for His first followers. In fact, as I discovered more verses, I came to believe this in a few months and historical research along with ongoing Biblical study in the following years
