    PROLOGUE

    April 23, 2016 ~ 06:47 pm ~ Houston Convention Center

Jonathan Summersby, or Jon as most of everyone knew his as, was the second oldest son of Lisa and Mark Summersby. After celebrating his twenty third birthday he was beginning to question his life. For most of it, he was the nerdy kid in school and the one to get picked on the most. It didn’t even matter that he came from the most respected and well known family in the county. The other kids still seem to seek him out for their own pleasure. He had never been athletic like his brother nor was he good with cars like his father. However, if you gave the man a book, he would have it read within two hours. He was a genius. His IQ was one hundred and forty two and though everyone tried to get him to pursue a career in something else, his one and only love was farming.

At the age of fifteen, when his Grandmother Jackson died, he had begun to take over the faming on the land that had belonged to his mother’s family for several generations. His father helped out with the farm and once Jon’s education was complete he would completely take control. After graduating early he started college at the age seventeen and on the first day of his sophomore year a beauty sat next to him in Biology.

Courtney Renee Saunders was five foot, five inches with caramel colored skin, long, ebony colored hair and chestnut colored eyes. She was beautiful and Jon had been sure he had found his soul mate.

They had dated for months and after winter break Jon knew he was ready to bring her home to meet the family. However, right before spring break she broke up with him and, like a dope, he let her go without a fight. After returning from the break, he discovered she had dropped out of college and moved back home. He tried contacting her but she made it painfully clear she was done with him. What had he done? Had she just used him?

Pushing the bad memories aside, Jon smoothed out his Captain Kirk shirt, put on his watch and smiled. It was another Star Trek convention that his friend had got them tickets to but just before leaving home Nathan was called away on an emergency. Even though Nate was a few years older than him they had bonded over their love for farming and everything Star Trek. Just like him, his friend had once had his heart broken and swore off love. The two had an ongoing tab at the local bar and used their nights out, as well as their convention trips, to pick up women. One broken heart was one too many and Jon now enjoyed the single life.

Well, here goes nothing, he said to himself as he walked out of his hotel room. Inside the Convention Center he gave his name and after paying the fee he walked to the bar to order a drink. I’ll have a beer please.

    Any particular kind?

Surprise me. The woman smiled at him and after he took his drink, he tipped her well before going to look around the room. There were pictures from the show and the movies. Two of the characters were signing autographs but neither was the one he wanted to see. His fascination was Lieutenant Uhura. The woman was smart, sexy and a real spitfire. Just the kind of woman Jon needed in his life. With a snort, he shook that idea away and began to scan the room again. That was when he saw her. Oh, there were several Lieutenant Uhura costumes there but none came close to his fantasy. The woman he was staring at was five foot, three inches with caramel colored skin and curly ebony colored hair that went to her shoulders. She was beautiful. Swallowing, Jon made his way to where she stood alone at the bar. Could I get another beer and I’d like to buy the Lieutenant a drink as well. He turned and almost swallowed his own tongue when he looked into her cognac colored eyes. If it was possible he was sure he could get drunk on her eyes alone.

Thank you, Captain, the beauty said as she accepted her drink.

You are welcome, Lieutenant. Are you here alone?

No my friend is off dancing with Worf. Chuckling, Jon looked around and smiled when he saw a blonde approach with a guy in a Worf costume. The two women whispered and when his Lieutenant giggled he felt his insides turn to mush. The women parted ways and when his Lieutenant looked back at him he gave her a mischievous smile.

Jhurnee Stevenson had just turned twenty two. She and her twin brother, Corey, was a product of a love affair their mother had while working on an Alaskan cruise ship. They never knew their father’s name but had known that the man had been a single Caucasian man looking for a good time. Being of a mixed race had made life difficult for her and Corey but they never doubted the love of their family.

They were born and raised in Juneau, Alaska, a popular cruise ship stop. The Stevenson family had owned and operated Wing Stop Diner for more than two decades. It was the most popular diner in the city because of their plane tours. They flew people up the mountains and made several trips around the popular ice fields. Since their grandparents’ passing Corey and their uncle ran the tours while Jhurnee and her mother ran the restaurant. She loved her job but after spending years in her mother’s shadows she had to wonder if she would ever be allowed to be more than a waitress or a line cook. Her culinary training was wasting away and her friend Marissa was begging her to come to live with her in Houston. Sighing, she looked over at her friend dancing with a guy in a Worf costume and wondered if she would ever find her own way in life. Everyone had a career they enjoyed, had happiness and was finding love. After coming close to losing her life, she was really starting to reevaluate things and had allowed her friend to drag her to a Star Trek convention. Dressed in a Lieutenant Uhura outfit she turned to order another drink just as someone stepped up.

Could I get another beer and I’d like to buy the Lieutenant a drink as well. She looked over and the Captain Kirk before her was drop dead gorgeous. He was six foot, three inches with wavy dark brown hair and blue eyes that reminded her of the ocean.

Swallowing, she looked at the handsome man and smiled. Thank you, Captain, she said as she accepted her drink.

You are welcome, Lieutenant. Are you here alone?

No my friend is off dancing with Worf. Chuckling, he looked around and smiled when Marissa approached with her dance partner.

Wow, what a hunk of a Capitan Kirk. Are you going to hook up with him?

    Marissa, I can’t...

You can. Besides, Worf here promised to show me his tattoo. Now go enjoy yourself. Remember to stay safe and don’t let him take you anywhere but his room. Her friend winked at her and walked off, leaving her alone with her Captain Kirk. Sighing, she turned and smiled at the man as she sipped her drink.

    Are you here alone, Captain?

Unfortunately, my friend was supposed to come but he canceled at the last minute.

    Oh, are you gay?

No ma’am. Did I not just prove that to you by buying you a drink?

Maybe you should take me to your room and prove it to me.

The man choked on his drink before he regained his senses. He then smiled as he set his drink down and took hers. Being raised an honorable man, I must give the lady what she has asked for but I must warn you it has been a few months for me.

As well as me. Now, Captain Stud, take me to bed.

Yes, ma’am! And he did. There passion filled night was beyond anything she had ever experienced and she knew, that no matter where she went in life, she’d never forget her Captain Kirk.

    July 30, 2016 ~ Juneau, Alaska

Jhurnee closed up the diner and locked the doors. After adjusting her jacket, she slipped her bag on her shoulder and started her walk home. It was six blocks away and she knew her brother and mother would most likely have dinner waiting for her. It was the fifth day in a row that Evelyn Stevenson was home sick. Both she and Corey insisted their mother go see a doctor but the older woman had refused. Jhurnee had taken over the diner and though it was her dream to do so, this was not how she wanted to do it. Sighing, she readjusted the strap of her bag and trudged up the street.

Several blocks later she saw an ambulance and police car parked outside her home. Panic set in and as she hurried down the street she screamed for her loved ones.

Mom, Corey! she cried out as she darted toward the house. Corey met her at the curb with tears in his eyes. Corey, what...what’s wrong?

It’s mom. She... she... she passed away.

What? No.... why... I mean how?

We don’t know. They asked if we wanted an autopsy done and I said yes. Is that okay?

Well yeah but how long will it take?

    Not sure.

Hey kids, Sheriff Grayson said as he approached them. The house is off limits until we know how she died. I’ll let you all get some stuff from the house but you will be staying with me until they know the cause.

Thanks, Mr. Grayson, Corey responded as he guided her into their house. Get as much as you can now. I’ll come back later on to get more if we need to. All she could do was nod as she held back tears. No doubt Mr. Grayson would help with funeral arrangements but they would need to call Uncle Matt, who was away on a business trip. She only hoped Marissa would be able to take time off to come help out.

Jon walked into Cody’s house with his dad, brother and friend Nate at his side. It was another poker night, a night for the men to gather and just be men. No wives, girlfriends or children were allowed. Of course Jon had neither and was not looking for either of them. He was happy being single and living for just himself. Did he miss having a girlfriend? Yes but apparently Jon had a sign stamped on his forehead that said he liked being used.

Since the night of the last convention his Lieutenant had haunted his dreams. He had wanted more, had wanted to get her real name but the next morning she was gone. Sighing, he sat in a chair and popped the cap off the beer that Cody handed him.

Where are Chris and Ethan? Cody asked Chase as he walked in with Luke.

"They will be here. They had to
