CHAPTER ONE

W ell, don’t you look good enough to eat up.

Emma’s brain froze, forgetting her worried thoughts. The smooth Texas drawl poured right through her soul and made her lower stomach flutter. She swallowed hard and her hand shook so badly she dropped the pen she’d been jotting down her budget with.

The noises of the animals around the shelter faded as her heart beat heavily in her ears. She looked up from her desk, forcing herself to stay put and not jump to her feet and run like hell.

Time seemed to move in slow motion as her gaze traveled up powerful thighs encased in snug denim and an impressive package hiding behind a zipper. A slim waist accented by a leather belt, and a firm chest and biceps wrapped in white cotton got a good look-over as well.

Emma braced herself as she took in the man’s square jaw and sensual lips. Finally, she met those blue, blue eyes ,and everything around her faded to black.

It was then that she realized she’d been holding her breath.

After letting it out in a big whoosh, she pasted on the most uninterested expression she could muster up while tamping down the hot lust swirling between her thighs.

Tipping back his gray Stetson, Liam sat on the edge of her desk and grinned right at her as if they’d just finished another session of the best sex ever. With a silent groan at her runaway memories, Emma pushed herself back a few feet in the rolling chair and crossed her arms over her chest; a conscious barrier.

Aww, aren‘t you happy to see me, Freckles? He reached out to touch her but she smacked his hand away and stood up. You let your hair grow. It looks good, even if it is held back in that clip. You know, I always did have a thing for redheads.
