Helen Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English writer, illustrator, scientist, and conservationist best known for her children's books featuring animals. Written as a gift for the son of her former governess, The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published in 1901. Its success enabled her to commit to full-time writing and illustrating.
