I used this story in my brother's classroom of third graders. I was incredible how they grasped the storyline of what is real and not real about the dollhouse and what the mice expected. They understood why Tom Thumb went into a "rage" and also understood that it wasn't right to destroy what was in the dollhouse. They talked about "regret" and being sorry. They talked about "forgiveness" and how the dolls understood and how the mice made "restitution" by giving the dolls "money" and cleaning their doll house every morning.
