How To Use the Present Tenses of American English in Everyday Situations
()
About this ebook
I have written this book from the perspective of an English as a Second language (ESL) instructor who was born and raised in the Midwestern United States of America. Education opens us to an unexplored world filled with unimaginable possibilities and a means whereby we can improve the lives of everyone around us.
English is regarded as the primary form of international communication, yet many non-native English speakers struggle with the proper use of the English language which can have a profound influence on their ability to become effective communicators.
Bearing this in mind, I designed this self-study English as a Second Language textbook to follow a simple format: introduce, discuss and apply the concepts that are discussed in each chapter. Students will know what to expect from the outset because the format that I establish in the first chapter is maintained throughout the entire textbook.
This book will be of immense benefit to students ranging from the elementary to upper-level intermediate levels of English communication. I hope that you enjoy using this textbook as much as I have writing it.

How To Use the Present Tenses of American English in Everyday Situations - Joseph Martin
Introduction
This book was written for anyone who uses English to communicate with family, friends, classmates, business associates, peers and just about anyone else who also uses English to communicate.
Native and non-native English communicators will find this book useful. I wrote it with a simple goal in mind: to help people improve their ability to speak and write more clearly in American English.
I decided to focus on the present tense quite simply because people who need help with this tense want to get straight to the point rather than sifting through content that they will not be using at that time.
I wrote this book to maximize knowledge comprehension and retention. To that end, each chapter follows the same format: introduction of the verb tense to be studied, objectives for the chapter you will be studying, presentation of the structure of the given tense, discussion of situations wherein the tense will be used appropriately, and exercises to challenge your understanding of the content presented in that chapter.
The solution to the exercises relies on your comprehension of the content that I have discussed in each chapter. In other words, you learn by doing, not by me giving you the answers.
I intend for this book to be used by people of diverse cultures because America is a diverse nation. None of the names, persons and situations presented in this book are intended to represent actual persons living or deceased.
Throughout this book I will be using American English spelling because I am a native born American citizen, hence the title of my book.
I hope that you enjoy using this book as much as I have enjoyed
