    Evolution - Dennis Renner

    THOSE TEN DAYS WERE HELL!

She was happy, everything was normal, healthy family, then……kidnapped, abused, deaths, monsters, search, standoff, uncertainty. These are some of the things Kattrina Walsh experienced in ten short days; ten days that seemed as if they would last forever.

A talented young woman of twenty-six, with a confident attitude and a plan in place to successfully earn her living doing what she loved, which was playing music, Kattrina Walsh had no idea what was lurking in her past. She grew up near a small rural town in south central Missouri in a typical country home based on a life of farming.

However, the bad man seemed to visit regularly.

At her young age she did not understand, she couldn’t understand. The only thing she knew for sure was that her parents kept her safe. As Kattrina grew and became a pretty and talented young lady, subtle signs of her birth heritage went unnoticed by her, but her parents knew. Kattrina was the product of a rape by a mythical creature, a creature that turned out to be far too real.

The creature was known by the Native American tribes of the remote areas of Canada and the western and northern United States as a Wendigo. It was a shape shifter, a beast with unimaginable capabilities and a relentless persistence for survival. The species had endured countless years of stagnant development that limited its potential for procreation and their advancement; now the opportunity.

had arrived to alter the evolutionary barrier that had been in place for thousands of years.

One of these creatures had attacked Kattrina’s mother, Shaylene Walsh, leaving her pregnant with its offspring. Shaylene had blocked the memory of the attack and subsequent rape from her memory and did not recall the incident or its consequences until years later when she confided in her husband, Kemper.

During Kattrina’s youth, the bad man, as she began to call it, visited regularly, checking on her, waiting for the right time to take her.

Then one night, when Kattrina was nearly seven-years-old, it came for her. A confrontation ensued and somehow, luckily, Kattrina’s father, Kemper Walsh dispatched the creature with a load of 00 buckshot from his 12-gauge shotgun, exploding its head in a rain of blood and flesh.

Through Kattrina’s young years and on into adolescence, her life was typical of any young girl growing up in the rural Midwest. When she was in fifth grade, she became interested in learning to play the guitar, so her parents bought her an inexpensive acoustic guitar from a big city catalog but Kattrina struggled to discover the intricacies of the instrument. It wasn’t until age eleven, when she heard of an old, black blues musician by the name of Charles Telley who resided in an adjacent town, that her musical abilities began to emerge. Charles took an immediate liking to Kattrina and assuming the role of teacher, fueled the musical talent that had remained dormant in her. He died of pneumonia a couple of short years later when Kattrina was thirteen. But he had sown the seeds of desire and her passion flourished, as the years crept by, she became a very accomplished guitarist.

At the age of twenty-one, accompanied by her parent’s blessings, she decided to head to Saint Louis to try to gain a foothold in the engrained blues music scene that was so popular in the city’s downtown area.

Living in a small studio apartment, she continued to hone her talents and drifted from jam session to open mic nights, even playing as street musician for tips and recognition. As the word of her talent infiltrated the music scene, she occasionally found the opportunity to sit in with a few of the local bands. Her ability developed and impressed other admired blues musicians, she became known as one of the hot new guitar slingers to watch. At twenty-four she created her own band, Roc ’n’ Blues, and in a brief span of two years, the band became one of the most sought-after blues bands in Saint Louis.

Kattrina was unaware it was at this same time that she was being pursued.

Her destiny began to unfold on a weekend trip with Evelyn ‘Texas’ Barrett, who was the drummer in her band and certainly her best friend, together they took a trip to her childhood home in southwestern Missouri. It was at the country home of her parents, Shaylene and Kemper Walsh, that she was raised in, that initiated her ten days in hell.

A descendant of the creature that had impregnated her mother discovered Kattrina’s whereabouts. This beast had tremendous powers of mental telepathy and extreme physical capabilities. Being able to sense Kattrina and determine her location, it began to put into play a plan to capture her and breed with her. The creature was easily able to determine Kattrina’s whereabouts and, summoning its unusual powers of shape shifting and altering its appearance, was able to close in. It was able to attain the physical form and mental knowledge of anything it killed by consuming the victim’s life organs. In this way, it could appear human and pursue Kattrina unsuspected.

However, before it could make its final move, Kattrina and Texas returned to Saint Louis. Not to be denied its prize, it acquired the necessary information needed to pursue Kattrina to the big city. It was there, after killing and consuming a casual boyfriend, it located her apartment, then, gaining access in the form of her dead friend, brutally raped her. In its newly acquired human form, the beast then kidnapped her and drove back to its lair not far from her parent’s home.

The plan was set and a dangerous confrontation was imminent.

Three of her close friends soon discovered the chaos and destruction in her apartment and began an intense, nearly fatal search for Kattrina.

John Reed Cloud, a Native American Shaman with connections to the ‘other’ world, led the pursuit. Along with Matt Whittaker, a friend and want-to-be boyfriend and her good friend and band mate, Texas, they followed clues and hunches and along with small town authorities discovered the trail that would lead them to Kattrina.

The primary form of the creature was a very large black cat, known locally, by questionable sightings, as a black panther. It would assume this form when it needed speed and stealth and Kattrina, as a by-product of this species, could also shift into the black panther form.

However, she did not know how to initiate the change or when it would happen. It was during one of these transformations that Kattrina, mistaken for the demon, was shot and critically injured by a local law enforcement officer. After once again regaining her human form, she was transported to a hospital, where, hunted down by the creature, it all came to a conclusion during an unbelievable and deadly showdown. Matt and John Reed were hospitalized due to injuries inflicted by the creature during the altercation that finally took the life of the Wendigo.

But, Kattrina could already feel the life growing inside.

The Saga of Kattrina Walsh Continues

    Chapter One

NOOOOO! NOOOOO! I CAN’T…. someone please help me. I can’t do this. That monster……... it……did this. I don’t want it, I……. Delirious with fear, her voice trailed off.

She lay naked on a bed of twigs, fresh leaves, ferns and moss. It was a soft bed of sorts but her pain was on the verge of being both mentally and physically unbearable. Darkness surrounded her, the only light offered by the flames of a nearby flickering fire. Peering up through the trees, she could see thousands of stars against the black night sky and the six unrecognizable figures that stood around her, watching, waiting, anticipating the event. Beads of perspiration formed on her entire body, glistening in the dancing fire light. Her abdomen protruded, round as a basketball, undulating as it attempted to expel its contents.

It hurts…... please make it stop! I can’t have this monster, this isn’t my baby! She was screaming both in agony and panic; crying, muscles tensing, as the inevitable process began. She could feel it, inside her belly, pushing to escape, her body racked with pain.

It’s time. something said and one of the figures approached her. She lay on her back, restrained, knees bent and held apart by a stick tied between them. Her arms were also secured with lengths of rope and spread out from her sides.

Completely immobile, she could only endure the trauma and terror that was leading her to the brink of insanity.

    The birth began.

She screamed and howled both in pain and fear, her body shuddered and shook. Suddenly, the creature at her feet reached between her legs and held high a growling infant. It was then that she passed out.

    ͌

KATTRINA AWOKE amidst sweat dampened, tangled blankets, disoriented and trembling. It was the same nightmare she had been having for the last two weeks. Tears left streaks on her cheeks as they trickled from her eyes. Where would this lead, what could she do? The beast had impregnated her with something that she could not begin to fathom. Another beast, an infant beast…. or was it human like she was?

She finally made the hard decision she knew was the only decision she could make. Sluggishly, she rolled from her bed, wearing only a tee-shirt and panties, damp from her traumatic dream. She looked in the full-length mirror on her wall. Her abdomen protruded, due to the being growing within her, there was no doubt that she was pregnant. Kattrina estimated three weeks and during that time she put her band on hiatus and hid away in her apartment attempting to determine her next move.

Physically she was pretty much all right; other than being pregnant, but emotionally she was a mess. Her thoughts were scrambled with indecision, confusion, anger and dread. When her friends called, she would talk to them briefly, telling them she was fine, just exhausted and trying to get past the trauma of her rape, kidnapping and the realization of what her true heritage was.

Walking to the bathroom she took a wash cloth, wet it with cold tap water and caressed her face. The coolness refreshed her as she wiped the perspiration from her overheated skin. She scrutinized the image in the mirror, a tired, worried face looking back at her.

It’s time, make the call. Kattrina said aloud to herself. Walking into the kitchen she picked up her cell phone and the paper that had an abortion doctor’s name and number. They answered on the second ring.

It was Thursday, the third of July, she scheduled an appointment for 11:00 a.m. the following Tuesday, July 8th. She would be a bit over three weeks into the pregnancy, far short of the typical fourteen-week deadline for the procedure. Scared but relieved to have put the plan in motion, she only had to wait five more days.

Her closest friends, Matt, Texas and John Reed Cloud were not aware of the growing creature inside her. That was the one thing she kept to herself, no one needed to know about that particular piece of the nightmare she had lived.

Matt and John Reed had been released from the hospital a few days after being admitted for the injuries they received during the standoff and subsequent killing of the creature that had tracked Kattrina, raped, then kidnapped her. All three of her friends wanted to be there for her but also knew she needed space and privacy to recover from the ordeal.

Her blues band, which had become so popular at John Reed's Sundancer Bar and Grill, understood that she needed some time off and since they were all very talented musicians, each was able to find income filling in with other bands.

John Reed Cloud, the owner of Sundancer’s, had also been part of the search and rescue of Kattrina from the creature, he knew most of the story, so he certainly agreed with the break until Kattrina could pull herself back together. Kattrina thought if she could dispose of the baby, the infant creature, whatever it was, with no one knowing, she could move past the trauma and resume her normal life. After all, the creature was dead, it had reverted to a small pile of soil which was the incinerated by the authorities.

Soon it would all be over.

    ͌

IT WAS 10:45 A.M. on Tuesday morning. Kattrina did not want to take a chance on being late for the scheduled 11:00 a.m. abortion procedure and had arrived at the clinic at 10:30 a.m.

Promptly at 11:00 a.m. a nurse entered the waiting room. Miss Walsh? Kattrina Walsh?

Kattrina rose from her chair almost robotically. Yes Ma’am. she replied and followed the nurse to the examination room. After they entered the small room, Kattrina took the obvious seat on the examination bench.

How are you today, Miss Walsh.

Doing her best to remain calm and show some level of normalcy, Kattrina replied, I’m fine, thank you.

Let’s see…... the nurse said reading her clipboard. You are here today for an ultrasound and immediate abortion if everything looks good, is that right?

    Kattrina just nodded her head.

I know you’re nervous. the nurse said, seeing obvious tenseness and uneasiness on Kattrina’s face. Try to relax. You’re in good hands here, Doctor Larson is a great doctor. You’ll be fine. Now, do you know approximately when you conceived?

Yes, Kattrina replied, about four weeks ago.

And is the father aware of the child?

The father is dead. Kattrina said bluntly, not wanting to offer any other information.

Oh, my goodness, I am so sorry……it’s just a question we must ask. I truly am sorry to have had to bring it up.

Kattrina looked the nurse straight in the eyes. Believe me, he was not the right one……. She hesitated, then decided not elaborate.

Okay, the nurse said, taken aback by the coldness of the statement. Let’s have you lay on your back. Unbutton your pants and scoot them down a bit and raise your shirt to just below your breasts.

Kattrina reached to her waist, unsnapped her jeans, lowered the zipper and wiggled them to just below her hips. The nurse moved closer to smear the lubricating, conductive gel on Kattrina’s abdomen.

Wow, you have a bit more belly protrusion than I would have expected for four weeks. Are you sure about four weeks?

Yes, absolutely sure. Kattrina replied firmly.

Would twins be a possibility? Have there ever been twins in your family……... or his?

No, not in my family, I have no idea about......his. She almost 'its' but caught herself. Kattrina wished the nurse would just get started with the ultrasound so she could abort this thing and regain her life.

After applying the gel, the nurse took the wand and began searching for the fetus. As she moved the instrument on Kattrina’s belly, she looked inquisitively at the monitor, continuing to rub the device on Kattrina, she scrutinized the screen, obviously confused by what it was disclosing.

With a very troubled look, the nurse said hesitantly. Wait here a minute, I’ll be right back. She stood and immediately left the room.

What the hell, Kattrina thought. She looked at the picture on the monitor screen but could really not make any sense of the image.

Within minutes an older man in a white lab coat entered with the nurse. Hello, he said. I’m Doctor Larson. My nurse asked me to take a look at your ultrasound. He turned to the machine, picked up the wand and began to glide it slowly over Kattrina’s skin. Examining the screen intensely, the doctor looked puzzled and said to his nurse. Could you apply a bit more gel, please?

After a few minutes, Dr. Larson said, Miss Walsh, how long do you think you’ve been pregnant?

    About four weeks. she replied

Four weeks……is there any possibility you could have become pregnant earlier than that? Perhaps a few months earlier?

A few months? Kattrina said somewhat startled. No! No way! I’m not in a relationship with anyone. I’ve not had sex with anyone…

But this…. uhhh, father……is it possible you and he had……

No! Kattrina interrupted, No! There is no way! I was raped! I never knew this person before!

Dr. Larson looked silently at Kattrina, not quite sure how to say what had to be said. I’m sorry Miss Walsh, but the fetus seems to be at least sixteen weeks old.

Kattrina lay in stunned silence. How could this be? The doctor must be wrong! No, Kattrina said in a whisper, No, that can’t be. Why would you say that?

Well, Doctor Larson replied slowly, the fetuses are………

Fetuses? Fetuses? What do you mean, fetuses? Kattrina exclaimed, perplexed by the doctor’s remark.

You have twins, there are two fetuses, both well developed, and in my opinion about sixteen weeks along.

Kattrina’s eyes darted quickly from the doctor to the nurse then back at the doctor again, both with concern on their faces. Her mind spun. Two? Sixteen weeks? Impossible!

    Doctor, what does this mean…...

Well, he replied guardedly, these babies cannot be aborted, they are too large and developed…... they…...

Kattrina’s eyes filled with tears, scarcely able to speak, her mind went blank. I……can’t…. have…these babies. she said softly, struggling to get the words out. I can’t…

The nurse had moved to Kattrina’s side and held her hand. In a reassuring tone, she tried to offer some comfort. We will help you through this. You will be alright. If you can’t keep the babies we can help……

NOOOO…...you don’t understand! You HAVE to do something! she said, panic rapidly setting in.

Miss Walsh, there is nothing I can do. the doctor replied, To try to abort these babies would certainly put your life in grave risk. It would be dangerous to you and medical malpractice. I’m sorry……I really do not have a choice.

Kattrina tried to sit up, but she had become light-headed and unwillingly lay back on the examination table.

There is something else, Doctor Larson said with guarded hesitancy and concern, One of the fetuses may be deformed.

Deformed? How? Kattrina said taken aback the statement and not confident that she actually wanted an answer.

One of the babies looks totally normal, but the other is…. well has…...actually does not have the structure we would normally see at this stage. Well, actually any stage…… The Doctor was not sure how to explain what he saw, and in fact, he was not exactly sure what it was he was observing on the screen. The other baby seems to be…. uuhhh, elongated. The torso that is…. the distance from the arms to the legs is abnormal. Also, the legs seem to be very close to the same length as the arms, which is extraordinarily unusual. In addition…

Oh god, Kattrina whispered, what else can there be?

The doctor continued. The head…. well, the head is too small….it does not seem to have reached the same growth stage as the body or the same stage as its twin.

Kattrina’s mind was spinning. Her thoughts racing from one thought to another. She felt hot, flushed, she could feel the beads of sweat forming on her forehead. She closed her eyes, then quickly opened them afraid of what she might see behind the darkness of her eyelids.

So, she began in desperation, to not only make sense of the situation but to also solve it and be done with it, if one is deformed, you can abort it……. right? It would be…….

No, Miss Walsh, I can’t. You will need to carry these babies to full term. They are too large to abort. Besides, the one fetus is completely healthy and normal.

    I……I….it……no, I can’t……. Kattrina struggled to speak.

I’m so sorry, Doctor Larson said quietly as he stood, Miss Walsh, there is nothing I can do at this point. I will do whatever I can to help you through this, but right now………. I’m sorry.

The doctor left the room leaving Kattrina alone with the nurse, the deafening silence and a mind that could not think.

The nurse was genuinely concerned and afraid for the young girl. Please, Kattrina, you can get through this. After the delivery we can help make arrangements for…...the disposition of the babies. We will, in the meanwhile, arrange for counseling to help you cope with this unfortunate situation. I’ll give you a few minutes to compose yourself, then I’ll be back with some papers for you to sign before you leave.

Kattrina watched in desperation as the nurse left the room. What now? What next? Too many questions and absolutely no answers. She quickly buttoned her jeans and pulled her shirt back down as she sat up, then without hesitation slid off of the examination table, her only thought was to escape. Zombie-like, she opened the door of the examination room and walked out. As she reached the waiting room the nurse called to her. Miss Walsh! Miss Walsh! Wait! There are papers to sign.

    Kattrina never heard the words
