Missing in action, Alex finally returns to Sars Springs. However, she has amnesia. Finding her way home leads her back into her destiny’s arms. Tragedy happens within the large family as several loved ones find themselves on death’s door.

A seemingly act of betrayal finds Alex on the opposite side of the law. When she tries to not only rebuild her memories, but her entire life, she finds the one person who knows her more than she knows herself.

Things and people are not who they seem … when Alex and family find out that life is rewritten, more than once in a lifetime.

Will Alex be able to restore her memories, even though it means remembering the worse parts of her life? Can Alex handle the truth when she comes face to face with another man from her past who wants her dead?

    1 Missing

FBI SPECIAL AGENT Hank Marshall buried his face in hands and shook his head. He looked up at the man standing over him. Are you sure, Frank?

Special agent Frank Sitterly sat down in front of him. Hank, I know she was your Agent. I’m so sorry.

"God, this can’t be true. I’m sorry, Frank. I know I shouldn’t get personally involved with my agents. But, this is personal. She is personal… even before she became an Agent."

Frank smiled. Hank, I feel terrible. I shouldn’t have requested her for this assignment.

Frank, it’s not your fault. She wanted to get away from here for a while. Will you just tell me what happened? I’m gonna have to tell her family.

All I know for sure is that she was undercover through one of those underground women’s groups. You know, the kind that helps victims escape their attackers.

    What was the big deal?

Well, this particular underground had a mole. Someone who was leaking information about each victim to their abusers. Women and children were being found and murdered by their abusers. She was sent in to find the leak.

    Did she ever report in?

"Yeah, for the past two years, she’s been reporting in like clockwork and all of a sudden it stopped about three months ago. Her contact was sent into find her. However, she was killed. Before she was killed, there was word that Alex was also killed."

    Where are their bodies?

We have Lucy’s body, but Alex’s still hasn’t been found.

We have to bring her home, here, to her family, Hank said. Frank, is there any hope that she’s still alive?

There’s always some hope until we find a body. You know that.

I’m just trying to figure out how to go about telling her family.

She has a big family, doesn’t she? Frank asked.

Yeah, one of the biggest. Four years ago, she divorced her husband, but has remained friends with him. The majority of the people in this town love her.

Frank stood up. Um, Hank, if there’s anything you need, please let me know?

Let’s bring our agent home, even if we have to bury her, Hank stood up and extended his hand. I’d like to pick up this case if you don’t mind.

Frank shook it. I’ll have all the info sent to you.

Thanks, I’ll follow you out, Hank followed him out of the office. Hank watched as Frank left the building and he headed down the hall toward the police department. He took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Um, Chief?

Evan Jones looked up and smiled. Agent, what can I do for you?

Um, I need your help, Hank said.

    With what?

I need to gather the family, Hank sighed.

    Alex?

    Yeah, Hank sighed.

What happened to my Lieutenant? Evan asked.

"She’s missing and presumed dead," Hank blurted out.

    2 Gathering

HANK AND EVAN walked into the MOD Private Investigation Agency. Mike? Mark? Evan called.

We’re all in here, Mark Dix poked his head out of the door of the conference room.

Hank and Evan slowly made their way to the room. Um, I’m glad to see that you could all make it, Evan said.

Bill Wheeler stood up. What is it?

Well, I just came from talking to Steven, Marjorie, and Xander, Evan said.

Jim and Matthew stood up. Evan? What’s wrong with Alex? Jim O’Roark asked.

Um, you all better sit down, Hank said.

    "Hank?" Terry Markum asked.

Um, I just don’t know how to say this to all of you. I needed to talk with the immediate family first, but I felt you all also deserved to hear it from me, Hank said.

What? Dammit. Just say it, Jim slammed his fist on the table.

Special Agent O’Roark, um, Alex, has been classified as missing in action, presumed d-d-dead, Hank stuttered.

What kind of sick joke is this? Matthew Garris cried. Is this another FBI foul-up?

Jim slowly slid down the chair. Angel, where are you? he whispered.

I’m sorry. I don’t have a lot of details. Special Agent Frank Sitterly is sending me the files on her case. Another agent was undercover with her and she, herself, was murdered.

Hank, where is my wife? Jim asked.

"Don’t you mean ex-wife?" Hank spat back.

Don’t play games with me. You know there has been no one for me since she left. Yeah, we’re divorced, but we still love each other. Where is she?

I don’t know. We still haven’t found her body.

Well, I won’t believe it until I see her for myself. You can’t tell me that she’s dead. She’s almost died so many times and she survived. You can’t tell me she’s dead.

Jim, when is the last time you heard from her?

Six months ago, when Matt and Raina graduated. She called to say that she was sorry she missed it. I don’t know if she’s talked to them since then, but they’re still in PA with John. Oh, god. Do my kids know?

Steven called them. They have the same attitude that you do, Hank smiled.

Terry stood up. Um, I need some air. I’ll be right back, Terry walked outside and sat on the stoop. Alex, where in the hell are you? he whispered to himself. He looked up as Hank left without saying a word. Terry stood up and walked back in the office. What’s going on?

I’m gonna find my wife, Jim said.

Need help? Terry and Matthew asked at the same time.

    Definitely, Jim said.

You three? Trying to find Alex? Isn’t that, well, um, weird? Bill asked.

What the hell do you want us to do, Uncle Bill? Matthew asked. We all love her.

Bill shook his head. She’s been gone for four years now. Haven’t you three moved on yet?

Screw you, Bill! Terry snapped. She slept with you years ago and you still love her.

You’re right. I’m sorry. You three have just been off and on friends since she left. You all have to learn to bury the animosity between the three of you and find her.

Bill’s right, Mark said. "You three have been bickering for four years. The truth is Alex belongs with Jim. She always has. But, she needed to escape and, my guess, she needed to escape from the three of you."

If that FBI case didn’t come up when it did, she may have come back. She was planning on it, Mike Dix said.

    She was? Terry asked.

Yeah, she wanted to make sure the apartment was still hers. I told her it was and always will be, Mike said.

Why did she take this damn assignment? Jim slammed his fist on the table. Now, she could be dead.

"She’s not dead, Dammit. Stop saying that, Matthew said. Maybe she does deserve to be with Jim, but when she left she didn’t want any of us, remember?"

We can’t fight about her anymore. We have to find her. We have to do it now. Evan, we’re taking the time, Terry said.

I’ll have you two put on this as an assignment. Bill, Eric, Tom, and Jennifer can pick up the slack. Don’t worry. You three go out and find my best friend, Evan sighed.

That goes ditto for me, Bill said. "I have to go home and tell Carol. But, as far as anyone knows, including our wives… he looked at Mike and Mark. She is just missing. She’s not dead. We know how things spread in this small town."

    What about Shapone? Evan asked.

He can read about it in the paper along with everyone else. I don’t give a damn about him. Eventually, he won’t be the model citizen he’s pretending to be, Bill said.

"I still can’t believe Carey hired him back at Solutions," Matthew said.

Alex insisted. She thought if he was kept busy it’d be good for everyone, Jim said. Matty, Terry, let’s go meet Hank and get the details. Looks like we have a long trek ahead of us.

We’ll see you later, Terry said.

Call us and let us know when you’re leaving, Mike said.

Yeah, we’ll cover anything you need us to, here. And keep us informed of your progress, Mark added.

Will do. Let’s go, Jim said, as he, Terry, and Matthew headed out the door.

    3 Old Time’s Sake

MATTHEW STOOD IN his bedroom and started packing. He zipped up the bag and stared out the window. Love, we will find you. How could two years go by so fast? his mind faded back in time to the last time he saw Alex, two years ago.

Matthew pulled into the driveway of the house on Mountain View Road, in Pennsylvania. He took a deep breath and spoke. It’s been so long, he unlocked the door as he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket. Hey, Matt, it’s me. I’m at the house now. I’ll only be here a few days.

Great. I had all the blueprints faxed to the office, Matt said. Call me tomorrow when you get a chance to look at them.

    I will.

Are you sure you’re all right?

Yeah, I haven’t been back here since your mother, and I lived here. I’ll see you later, Matthew walked down the hall toward the kitchen. He put his bag on the counter and walked over to the window. Not much has changed. It’s like she left everything the same. I’m glad that Jason didn’t sell this place. I put my heart and soul into building it. It’s not just a house, it was a home. A home that Alexis and I shared together. Damn, six years wasn’t enough. I guess nothing is ever enough. There’s never enough time, He opened the shades and stared out into the yard. Alexis? he whispered. It is her, he ran out of the house and toward the backyard. Alex?

She turned around and smiled. Matthew, what are you doing here?

I’m staying here a few days. I have some work I need to do here and then, I’m going to Austin in a few months. We’re growing again. Alex, what are you doing here?

I just got back from Paris. Hank called me and wanted me to go back to work. I thought I’d stay here a few days in the quiet view of the mountains. I just need to clear my head.

I heard that you and Terry broke up.

Just ended. It didn’t break. Nothing major. I need some time to myself.

If you want, I’ll just go to a hotel.

No, she took his hand. Stay. I could use the company.

Let’s go in. I’m starved, he smiled. I’ll fix us something to eat. I got some groceries in the truck.

Alex took his hand, and they walked around to the front of the house. You know what I was thinking about?

No, what? he said, as he opened the trunk.

When we first moved in here, she smiled as she helped him with the bags.

Alex, I am sorry about our life together.

Don’t be. I’m not, she said, as they went into the house.

He gazed at her lovingly. Are you sure you’re OK?

Yeah, how are the kids doing? They tell me they’re fine, but you know them, they never want me to worry.

They’re doing wonderful. I’ve been seeing them a lot lately, he said, as he started cooking the dinner.

Matthew, she touched his hand lightly. I have to admit that I’ve wanted something from you for a long time.

    What’s that?

To be with you again. It’s not because I’m lonely or even want to start a new relationship with you, it’s just to be with you, she smiled.

    Oh, no relationship, huh?

Sorry. I can’t be that way. I’m not ready for any relationship. The truth is Terry, and I didn’t work out because I still love Jim. But, I’m trying to find myself. Myself without him... Without Jim. I don’t know if I’ll ever be with him again, but I haven’t been able to stop loving him.

I understand, he smiled. We all have to figure out who we are when we’re alone. Otherwise, we’ll never know. I think that we have to be alone for a while, so that we’re a better person when we’re with someone.

Matthew, I don’t want to hurt you.

    You never could.

She stood up and walked around the counter. Matthew, will you just hold me?

He wrapped his arms around her. Love, I’ll hold you as long as you need it.

I’m glad you’re here, she smiled. I could use the company. Really. I have been alone for a long time.

Let’s eat and we’ll have some wine. I picked up a few good bottles on my way here.

Planning on getting drunk? she laughed.

I figured if I was staying here, I’d need to drink to be in this house again.

I know the feeling. The first time I was here after you died, was when I got out of jail. I just packed everything up and was out of here in a few days.

Alex, I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that.

I’m better. It was hard, but I got through it. I didn’t always make the right decisions, but I did it, she led him over to the table and poured them both a glass of wine.

    You’re a survivor.

    I try. Sometimes I wish…

    What is it?

Sometimes I wished we decided not to go on the camping trip. We’d still be together. Don’t you think?

Yeah, we would, he kissed her mouth softly.

Alex smiled. For old-time’s sake? she took his hand.

He stood up and took her into his arms. For old time’s sake, he lifted her up and carried her into the bedroom. He carefully laid her on the bed and slowly unbuttoned her blouse.

He kissed her softly as she took off his shirt. She gently ran her finger over his medallion tattoo. I always loved this tattoo, she flirted.

He kissed her softly as he made love to her. Oh, I’ve missed you so much.

Alex rolled over and smiled. It was wonderful, you know.

    And, it’s our secret, right?

Yeah, I don’t want to ruin your relationship with your brother.

Don’t worry about that. If we don’t talk about you, we get along just fine, he ran his hand down her body. Where are you going from here?

I’m not sure. I have to call a Frank Sitterly in a few days, she held him. I remember this.

I’ll never forget it, he smiled as he kissed her forehead.

He took the bag out to his car, I doubt that will ever happen again, but I will definitely find out where you are. You aren’t dead, are you? he whispered, as he started his car.

    4 Regret

TERRY PICKED UP his suitcase and headed for the door. He looked over at the stand beside the couch. He picked up Alex’s photo. You can’t be dead. I just don’t feel like you’re dead. Oh, Alex, I know we will never be together again, but I still have so much to say to you.

Terry knocked on the hotel room door. Alex answered and stared into his eyes. What are you doing here? she asked.

I came to see you. I’m sorry. I know you needed space, but I needed to see you, he said.

Terry, come in, she led him over to the sofa. Please, take a seat.

Alex, I’m so sorry. I know you left to get away from me.

That’s not true. I’m sorry if leaving Sars Springs left you with the impression that I was leaving you. Terry, we were good together, but we’re not meant to be together. It just doesn’t feel right. I don’t ever want to hurt you. I love you, but not like you deserve.

I know. I just thought I pushed you so hard. You know, Alex, I’d like you to come back. Please?

Terry, I hope you didn’t fly all the way to Paris to ask me home. I can’t go yet. I just need time to myself.

    Are you with anyone?

No, why would you ask that?

Well, I know that Matthew has been spending a lot of time out of town. Did he fly here, too?
