    Introduction

Dr. Raina Markum has always had the undeniable powers of not only feeling the dead but raising the dead. She never thought, though, in a million years, that this one person would rise again and be part of her life again.

As she learns about the history, more secrets get revealed. She tries to hide her secret from her family, as she is determined to make amends for her mistakes of the past. Will her family ever be the same? When more faces from the past come to surface, will she be around to help them through it, or will she finally break down before she gets the chance?

    1 Frustration

ALEX O’ROARK LOOKED up from her porch as Terry Markum pulled into her driveway. "Terry, what the hell did you do to my daughter?" Alex stood up as he ran toward her.

"Alex, where is she? Where is my wife? Terry stopped. Please, tell me. Where is she?"

"She’s in the gym. She ran past me, muttering something about you and headed right toward the gym, Alex crossed her arms and shook her head. What is going on here?"

Alex, I’m not even sure myself, Terry said, heading behind the house toward the gym.

Dr. Raina Markum punched and kicked the body bag. Damn, you! she muttered each time. How could you do this to me? she cried, hitting the bag repeatedly.

Raina? Terry stood in the doorway as he watched his wife hit the bag. Raina ignored his call and continued hitting the bag. He walked over to her and grabbed her arms gently. "Raina, talk to me."

She stopped and glared at her husband. "What?"

You tell me, he smiled. What’s wrong?

She pulled away from him and sat down on the edge of the boxing ring. "You let that, that woman, that girl fawn all over you. How could you do that to me?"

"What are you talking about? He held her hands and smiled. Doc, tell me, what’s wrong?"

Raina buried her face in her hands. This whole town is falling apart, she shook her head. "I came to see you at the precinct, and I saw her with you."

Who? Who are you talking about? Terry sat next to his wife. "Oh, her. I know who you’re talking about," he laughed slightly.

"What’s so funny?" she crossed her arms.

Doc, that was Sally Simpson. The police commissioner’s daughter.

    "Why was she touching you?"

First of all, she’s only 18.

"So? You loved me when I was 18, I just didn’t know it yet," she crossed her arms tighter.

He placed his hands on her arms. "Doc, I love you, he tried to kiss her. Please, Doc. Don’t you know by now how much I love you?" he grinned.

"Oh, I guess I did overreact, Raina smiled slightly. I’m sorry. I was never the jealous type. I don’t know why I acted that way."

Terry held her face as he kissed her. Doc, it’s OK. She was just telling me that her father wants me to show her around the station. She’s thinking about joining the police academy.

    "You? Why you?"

I turned her down. I sent her in Clark’s direction. I’m with homicide, but I think she’d be better off working in robbery or something like that.

    Terry, why?

She’s, well, too innocent to see the dead bodies, Terry shook his head. "Sometimes, I’m too innocent to see them. I don’t know how you do it."

She wrapped her arms around her husband. I’m sorry I got jealous.

I think there’s something else going on in that head of yours, he kissed her forehead. Tell me.

She looked into his eyes as the tears streamed down her face. Our babies, she cried.

Why? Doc, why are you so upset? Terry stopped. Oh, you’re still worried about it, aren’t you?

Yeah, I can’t help it. I want them to go to the school but that’s also, where my other babies died. It’s so hard, she stood up and walked over to the window. "Damn, it, Terry. I love you so much and I worry so much about them. Xander is 11. Logan is only nine. I just worry. My other babies were 13 when they died."

He walked over to his wife and wrapped his arms around her. Even though I didn’t know it at the time, they were mine, too, he kissed her cheek. If you don’t want them to go…

She turned around. I do. I want them to have the best education ever. I want them to live their dreams. Not for us, or their brother and sisters, but for themselves. They don’t need to know what they want to do right now, but I just want to give them the opportunity to learn what they want to be, she placed her hands on his shoulders.

It’s OK. This town seems like it is going downhill ever since we rid it of the FBI experiment. We have to find a way to rebuild this town. Somehow. That’s why your father and Matthew decided to reopen the police academy.

It’s just so hard. The hospital seems to be falling, because there aren’t as many patients. This is a damn ghost town. The only people that seem to live in this town are our family.

I had an idea about that, Alex said, walking in the gym. Sorry to interrupt, but I got a little worried about you two, she smiled.

Mom, it’s OK. I just needed to get my frustrations out, Raina smiled.

I do that every night since your father’s been gone. He should be home next week, but I miss him.

You said you had an idea, Terry said.

I have something in the works with my brother. Don’t worry. Raina, honey, you and Martin just keep the lab going. Don’t close it. Things will work out.

    You think so?

Of course. Don’t you feel it? Alex laughed.

Raina laughed, as she shook her head. I try not to do that anymore. It’s too scary.

You shouldn’t be afraid of what’s in front of you or what you feel. You should only be afraid of what you don’t know, Alex kissed her cheek. Why don’t you two join me for dinner?

    Are you sure, Mom?

Alex nodded. I’d love for you two to spend the evening with me.

Raina looked at her husband. What do you think?

Sounds good. Xander and Logan are with Matt and James for the night, Terry said, taking his wife’s hand.

    2 New Hope

RAINA SIGHED, AS she walked into her office. She put her feet up on the desk and leaned back in her chair. She quickly removed her feet when there was a knock on the door. Yes?

Um, he slowly opened the door. Dr. Markum?

She stood up. "Yes. How’d you get through security?"

He pushed his jacket to the side, exposing his gold badge. He extended his hand. Kenneth Doyle, FBI.

Oh, what did you need from me? Raina asked, pointing to the chair.

Um, I work out of the New York City office, he said, sitting down.

What brings you all the way here to Sars Springs? We’re not even really on the map anymore, she sat down.

"Um, your name came up a few times in the past few years. I’m not just an agent. I’m a doctor."

"Doctor? What kind of doctor? I’m sorry, but what do you want from me?"

I didn’t mean to disturb you. I actually have a proposition for you.

"I’m sorry if I sound rude, but I don’t have any faith in the FBI or any of its, um, associates."

I can understand why. I know what the Phoenix office was responsible for doing to this town and its people, he sighed heavily. What I’m proposing, I think, will help you and, also, help me.

What is this about, Doctor? Raina asked.

I have some patients in New York that I’d like to bring here, to your lab, and have your help. You’re one of the smartest doctors and scientists in the United States. You’re not afraid to take chances or risks but not at the expense of your patients.

How do you know me so well?

You were recommended to me by an old friend.

    Who is?

"Jasper Timmery. We graduated from Quantico together."

Oh, Jasper is a good man. He’s been my cousin’s partner for years, Raina smiled. Did he know you were coming?

No. When he and Dr. Welch were in New York last month, I was talking to them about my patients. Some of them were transferred to my lab from a lab that used to exist in Austin, Texas. Some are just patients that had nowhere else to go for safety reasons, he sighed.

Raina stood up and sat on her desk. She looked into Kenneth’s eyes. You remind me of someone.

    Who?

I’m sorry. You remind me of my Uncle Bill. He died a few years ago. I’m sorry.

No, that’s OK. Do you think you could help me? Kenneth asked.

Probably. I’d like to try, but, first, I’d like Martin and I to take a look at their records. I’m not sure what kind of facilities you would need.

I’d like to take a tour of your facilities if you don’t mind. I heard about your sub-level lab and your secured ward, Kenneth stood up.

"Well, I still have patients in the secured ward. Five years ago, some men from an FBI experiment were shot and severely injured. The ones that survived the shooting are still up there in stasis. Maybe, at some point, I’ll show you that. But for right now, we’ll visit the trauma rooms, Great Room, living room, and Attic lab, Raina smiled. I like my lab to feel like home."

This is way more than just a lab, he smiled, combing his hand through his sandy hair.

My Uncle Steven calls it a hospital within a hospital, she laughed slightly. I guess it is. Follow me.

He stopped as he stared at the photos that carefully hung up on the wall. In memory of? He started to read the names under each photo. Evan Jones, Trey Emerson, Rose Dix, Annabelle Morton, Hank Marshall, he stopped and stared at the next photo.

"Those are some people who have died because of FBI involvement. Whether it be from Cerebtrix or just plain murder."

He continued to gaze into the eyes that stared back at him. Walter William ‘Bill’ Wheeler? he whispered, lightly touching the photo.

My Uncle Bill. He was killed five years ago. Is something wrong? Raina watched as a lone tear streamed down his face. "Kenneth, what is it? You know him, don’t you?"

Kenneth slowly looked into Raina’s eyes. I didn’t realize he was your Uncle Bill, he wiped the tear off his chin.

    How do you know him?

"He’s, um, he was my, um, father."

"Your father? Raina stared at him. Are you sure? I mean, I’m sure you’re sure. But, I, we, none of us, knew he had a child. He never, ever mentioned that he had a son."

I haven’t seen my father since I was three. Eyes never lie. I’ll never forget those eyes. I’ve heard about him and knew who he was.

I’m so sorry. Did you know that he passed?

No, I didn’t even know where he was or what he did with himself after he left Pennsylvania. I was given up for adoption soon after I was born.

She took his hand and led him to her office. Kenneth, please, sit down, she held his hands as she looked into his eyes.

"Get your hands off my wife," Terry said, as he burst in the office.

    "Terry, don’t," Raina said.

"Who is this man and what’s he doing holding your hand?" Terry snapped.

This man, my love, she smiled. "Don’t even think about it."

    "What?" Terry crossed his arms.

This man is Dr. Kenneth Doyle. He’s from New York. He works at an FBI lab and wants me to take in some of his patients. But… there’s something else.

Terry sat down next to Kenneth and stared into his eyes. You look like… he whispered.

Kenneth, this is my husband, Inspector Terry Markum.

    Kenneth smiled slightly. I’m sorry.

"No, let me apologize. I’m not used to anyone touching my wife. Sorry."

"No, I was just about to explain how her Uncle Bill is my father."

You do look like him, Terry smiled, as he uncrossed his arms and crossed his legs. "Tell us. We never knew he had a child."

Well, my mother was a married woman when she had an affair with him. After I was born, they gave me up for adoption. When I was about two, my real mother was killed in a car accident. After that, my father tried to find me.

You said you saw him when you were three? Raina asked.

My father came to see me. I don’t remember it much. He told me how much he and my mother loved me. Then he was gone, but he sent me letters and photos throughout the years. He shared parts of his life with me, and I, when I got older, did the same, but, no, we never saw each other again. He sent me a letter telling me that he was leaving Pennsylvania and going to start a new life. He couldn’t live with the memory of my mother’s death anymore. I never heard from him again.

Oh, I’m sorry. He never, ever mentioned it to any of us, Raina said. I think besides my mother, I was the closest to him, she smiled. He was a remarkable man, but he did keep too many secrets.

I’m sure. At some point, not now, I’d like to learn about him.

Of course, Raina smiled at Terry, who shook his head. What?

Terry looked at Raina and then at Kenneth. "Your mother, Gloria, right?"

Kenneth looked at him. How did you know?

    Raina looked at him, "Gloria?"

"Gloria Dix. Mike’s first wife," Terry sighed.

"Mike Dix, you know him?" Kenneth asked.

He and his brother, Mark, live around here.

Oh, I don’t know what to say. I didn’t know, he leaned back. As far as I knew, he didn’t know about me.

Well, we don’t have to let it out. We can keep secrets, Raina said. Kenneth.

    Please, it’s just Ken.

"All right, Ken. Why don’t you get settled in your hotel and we can do the tour tomorrow?"

Is there a hotel around here?

"Marshall Hotel Suites. It’s on Palace drive. Take Main Street down for three blocks, take a right at the police station on Court Street and it’s the third left," Terry said.

Thanks. If you see Jasper, tell him I’ll see him tomorrow. I am kind of tired. I came here straight from the airport, Kenneth shook hers and Terry’s hand.

Bye, Ken. We’ll see you tomorrow, Raina sighed, walking out the door and shook her head at Terry.

    What?

    "Now, who was jealous?"

Oh, I couldn’t help it. It’s been a while since I had competition for your heart.

"Well, you don’t have it now. But now you know how I felt the other day, she hugged him. What did you come here for, anyway?"

I wanted to take my wife out to dinner, he smiled.

There’s no restaurant around here anymore, since Amoré shut down.

I have dinner and we’re eating out, in the park. Come, wife. Let’s go make a moment, he took her hand and led her out of her office.

    3Moments

TERRY TOOK RAINA’S hand and led her through the park. Where are we going? she whispered.

Over here, he pointed to a picnic table, which was spread out with a tablecloth and a basket.

    Terry? she smiled.

Doc, I love you so much. I love you every day. Sometimes we end up letting life get in the way of our romance and us. I realized the other day that we needed this. We need some time to ourselves. Our sons are going away to school and won’t be home as often. You have your job and I have mine. Yours takes up a lot of your time, and mine can call me out at all hours of the day or night.

I’m sorry. I guess it’s the lives of a doctor and a cop, she sat down at the table. I’m so sorry if you feel I’ve been neglecting you.

He took her hands as he sat next to her. "It’s not that, my love. It’s that you’ve been blaming yourself for the downfall of Sars Springs. Doc, it’s been five years since we cleansed this town."

Raina stood up and walked over to the bank of Salter’s Creek. "Terry, look at this town. When word got out that the FBI had
