About the Author
Chapter 1
"Gram, open your eyes!" a woman’s voice pleaded.
He knew the voice, but he couldn’t seem to place it. With his senses slowly returning, Gram could feel the woman tug on his arm.
He’s not waking up!
she proclaimed.
Calm down!
a man’s voice scolded. Gram’s fine. He’s starting to wake.
Flickers of memory ignited Gram’s mind, and he identified the voices as belonging to Sandrine and Mabon.
Don’t tell me to calm down in my own damn home!
Sandrine hissed.
My allegiance is to Pearl, not you!
Mabon returned in a voice as sharp as a dagger.
Gram’s blue eyes fluttered open, and he saw the concerned faces of Wilson, Mabon, Pearl, and Sandrine. The four were standing over him like onlookers gawking at a fatal car crash.
How do ya feel, son?
Wilson asked, helping Gram sit up.
What the hell happened?
Gram muttered, feeling more energetic than usual.
Has he forgotten?
Pearl asked urgently.
No,
Mabon replied, it’ll all come back in a second. I can feel Mathias’ magic inside him, and I can sense Gram’s mind organizing the new memories into his existing thoughts.
Mathias,
Gram said, attempting to rise to his feet. He was here, wasn’t he?
A spectral form of your father was here,
Wilson said, giving him a hand up.
Mathias may have been a specter, but he was present enough to give you his energy,
Pearl reported.
Energy?
asked Gram.
Yes,
Mabon replied. Mathias gave you something significant. Do you recall?
Gram steadied himself against the dining table and then stood straight up. Yes!
The quarterback’s eyes widened. My father zapped me with some blue flash of energy.
Mabon nodded. Yes, Mathias gifted you with what was left of his spectral lifeforce. Although unusual, there have been known cases of hexian spirits bolstering their progeny with the power they possessed in life.
How do you feel?
asked Wilson.
The words washed over Gram, but he took a moment. Looking past the staring faces, he observed the room. The lights were now on, so every color jumped out at him with its vibrancy. He had felt strong before, but now he felt invincible. Preternatural strength and boundless vitality were pulsing through his veins.
Different,
Gram finally answered. Everything’s so…
He trailed off.
"Everything’s so…what?" Sandrine asked.
So bright and colorful.
Gram continued scanning the room. But I’m confused.
Mabon took Gram’s hand. What confuses you?
Memories,
the teen said. I see…
He shook his head back and forth repeatedly, attempting to clear his thoughts. I have memories that aren’t mine.
He looked at Mabon. But how is this possible?
You’re experiencing Mathias’ memories,
Mabon replied with certainty. You’ve received them as part of the spectral transfer.
But Mathias lived for tens of thousands of years,
Pearl observed. Does Gram have all his father’s memories?
If this were a normal ascension, he’d have only some of the memories,
Wilson chimed in. But I’ve never seen an ascension quite like this before, so I’d be smart not to wager one way or another.
Gram paled suddenly and closed his eyes. It was like the world fell away, and Gram saw dozens of snarling faces around him. Although he didn’t feel fear in this memory, he felt phantom pain. And there was a flash of a smarmy blond man with black eyes.
What’s wrong?
Mabon asked.
When Gram opened his eyes, they were haunted. I can see a man, but it’s not a man,
he began. He’s blond with black eyes. He’s holding a sword. I think it’s Ford.
Gram stared down at Mabon. Now, he’s swinging the sword.
Gram put his hands to his neck. I can feel the sharp blade severing my head!
he cried out.
What’s happening?
Sandrine asked fearfully.
He’s remembering Mathias’ death,
Mabon said darkly.
Oh, God!
Gram continued. I can see Mathias’ decapitated body!
How can you see these things? Mathias’ head was cut off, right?
Pearl asked.
Mathias’ head was still aware of what was happening!
the teen gasped. His body’s still moving – Mathias’ headless body is trying to stand!
Oh, Earth Mother!
Sandrine cried out. The man was decapitated but still awake?
Yes!
Gram revealed. My father’s head is on the floor of what looks like a throne room, and I can see where they’re stabbing his writhing body.
He clutched his stomach, the horror of being a disembodied head twisting his guts. Gram put his hand to his mouth. I’m gonna puke! Where’s your bathroom?!
There’s one across the hall,
Pearl responded.
But as Gram’s big feet started to move in that direction, his stomach lurched, he doubled over, and then Gram vomited all over the dining room floor.
As Sandrine cleaned up the mess, Mabon and Wilson helped Gram to a sofa in Pearl’s living room.
I don’t ever want to see that again,
Gram said, tears falling down his cheeks. He looked at the sympathetic faces of his fellow hexians. I ain’t a guy to usually cry, but seeing through the eyes of a decapitated man who was still fully aware of his circumstances was so fucked-up. Never in my worst nightmares could I even fathom something so horrific.
Gram, I know these memories seem like you’ve lived through them, but you must remember that you have not,
Wilson advised logically.
But Mathias was alive for a while after they cut off his head!
Gram went on. Ford and his followers were cruel and mocking. They burned his body while making the severed head watch. Then they carried him around by his hair for hours until Ford…
He trailed off.
Until Ford what?
Wilson asked.
Gram took a deep gulp of air. Until Ford sliced off Mathias’ skin and hair and scooped out his brains… That’s where the memories end.
His was a horrible death,
Wilson said solemnly.
A death that must be avenged!
Mabon declared, bloodlust in his green eyes.
Yes! We must avenge my father’s death!
Gram looked at Mabon with newfound clarity. I understand now. Your cause is just and noble, Mabon. I will help you destroy the two-souled ghoul, but first,
Gram rose to his feet, I’m ravenously hungry.
What is it that you seek for nourishment?
Mabon probed.
It’s not food at all,
Gram realized, looking at the two older hexians. "I’m ready to fuck! Will I be able to absorb essence now?"
Mabon smiled. Yes, Gram, it is time for you to feed like a true hexian, and there are four stupid boys all tied up across town who are ripe for the picking.
Worried that Gram would fall out or vomit again, Sandrine and Pearl insisted that their visitors remain for a few more minutes to make sure the football player was steady enough to leave. Recalling Mathias’ tip, Mabon stepped outside to use his cell.
Hello, Ulf,
Mabon said sweetly in a predatory voice.
Mabon!
Ulf exclaimed. Where are you?
That is none of your concern at the moment, but soon, it will be. And don’t bother trying to triangulate my signal. This phone’s a burner.
What do you want?
I want the two-souled ghoul dead, and from what I’ve been told you and your brother wish him dead, too. Perhaps a little buyer’s remorse on your part?
I don’t know how you got your information, but it’s wrong. We’re loyal to Ford.
Mabon laughed. You’re a terrible liar, Ulf. From what I’ve been told, you and Uli were promised Brax. Now, Ford has gone back on his word. Do you deny this?
I deny nothing!
Ulf proclaimed. Exactly how did you find this out?
"Mathias told me."
But he’s dead!
He is dead, but his all-seeing spirit remained. Now, he’s been set free.
I don’t understand.
"It’s not your place to understand! But know that I’m coming for Ford soon, and I’m offering you, your brother, and
