A Random Act of Kindness - Mike Coy RFC CPBA

    Afterword

    PROLOGUE

have you ever thought about a certain day or certain event that might have changed history? The bombing of Pearl Harbor. JFK, RFK, MLK assassinations. 9-11…..What about in your own life? You ever had that one certain moment, maybe a nonplanned, random event, that made you stop and go hmmmmm? I know I have.

June 14th, 1978. A nurse rolled my daughter into the hospital baby room. My mother-in-law, at the time, said; That doesn’t look anything like Nancy! My life was complete.

Please understand, in the late 70 s and early 80 s you did not know the gender of your child beforehand. You found out when everyone else found out. Surprise!!

September 2, 1981. I was stepping off the elevator at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, TX when a nurse said; Mr. Coy? My father said; Yes? The nurse looked at him, then at me and said; I don’t think so! C’mon, we are bringing your son down the hallway right now.

And July 12th, 2013. The ENT at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA walked into the exam room and said the three words no one ever wants to hear from a doctor; You have Cancer… I assure you those three horrible words coming from the doctor had a significant impact on my life. For someone that has never been sick a day in his life to suddenly be faced with Cancer.. .I can tell you my life has changed.

My kids give me a hard time about my life being broken up into two phases: BC (Before Cancer) & AC (After Cancer).

Several years ago, I read a true, inspirational short-story by John W. Schlatter called; A Simple Gesture. His story was about a simple gesture of kindness. Something I strongly believe we need badly in our country today.

Neither Jake, the athlete, or Gabe, the nerd, existed at the time. These were my two central characters that brought together my vision of this incredible story. It was a simple, random act of kindness that not only brought these two young men together as friends, it changed their lives forever. I hope and pray it does the same for you. I know what it has done for me.

Reaching out to someone with a simple, random act of kindness might be the golden ticket someone else really needs in their life at that certain time in their life. Helping someone through a tough time, especially when you have no idea that person is going through a tough time, is even more special.
