Chapter 1: Her Reign of Choice
That was either the best or worst decision ever. Mera promised she wouldn’t let anything happen to her immortals. It didn’t even seem strange anymore when she thought of her immortals. She took a deep breath. Whatever happened, she had to be strong. I’m sure. This is my home now.
Arc bowed. Very good, my Queen.
More screams surrounded them. He grabbed her hand and led her into another room and shut the door. We should be safe here.
Should be? Safe from what? Which side are you on?
His smile tried to reassure her. Yours, my Queen.
Someone broke into the room they were just in. Mera backed up as far as she could, but the new room was a closet. All the oxygen had already been sucked out. Was that possible? She couldn’t breath. How could a room not have oxygen? Arc looked at her with a wicked expression, and Mera stepped back. She didn’t want the witch to save her like Zash did in town by kissing breath into her lungs. I hope they don’t look here.
Arc shook his head. He mouthed the word, Safe.
Here’s another vampire,
a voice said.
Laughter.
Those bastards don’t stand a chance against us,
another said.
More laughter.
Here’s hoping he suffered.
It sounded like someone was pounding hammers or shovels or clubs into the ground. Over the ashes? Why? Arc put his finger over his mouth as Mera’s mind swirled with questions. I can’t help it. I question everything. Always have. I’m a serial questioner. The noises stopped, and everything returned to quiet. Who were they? Were they actually battling the ashes? The vampire can’t un-ash himself, can he?
Arc looked at Mera as if he wanted to tell her but grabbed her hand and led her out a side door. It was night. She had no idea how long she’d even been in that room. She hadn’t seen night since she arrived. She always thought it was daytime. How long had it been since I was captured? How far away are my immortals? What are they thinking? I want them here, but I don’t want them in danger. Mera had no idea where she was since she’d been taken to the building blindfolded. It looked like a picturesque deserted country road. From what she could see of it anyway.
In the distance, fires engulfed the town, people screamed, explosions rocked the area. Mera looked up at shadows in the trees and realized the shadows were of several people hanging. Mera jumped back, but Arc turned her away. I won’t let them hurt you.
Who? Weren’t they human? Wouldn’t they be on our side? My side?
His eyes widened, and he pulled her closer to the tree with the hanging ones. Footsteps came from everywhere. Several vampires appeared dragging people with ropes around their necks. Arc pulled her close to him and chanted something.
The vampires dragged the people to the tree. Mera was close enough she could see the tear stains on the face of a girl her age. She looked haunted. She assumed from her clothes she was a reign. Her face was bloody, and she held her dress together where it had been ripped. Mera wondered when she was chosen. What time was she from? Did she have a choice?
Arc tightened his hold on Mera. She hoped they were invisible or something since no one was paying attention to them. She didn’t dare move or breath. She wasn’t sure if they’d be able to hear them or sense them, and Mera didn’t want to take a chance.
The girl was so close Mera could almost touch her. She wanted to comfort her. To speak to her. To tell her it was going to be okay, but Mera had never been able to lie. Mera wanted to look away, but she couldn’t. The girl was so scared. There was nothing left in her eyes but fear.
Arc held Mera closer to him, and she heard his heart race as five more vampires appeared with more reigns. Four boys her age and another girl. All had been beaten and most had bite marks on their necks and blood stained clothes. They didn’t cry out or beg or scream. Do they have anything left in them?
The vampires poked them, spit at them, laughed at them. Mera closed her eyes tight. Chicago looked pretty good. Arc’s grip tightened even more. He could read Mera’s thoughts. He knew how scared she was. He could read the regrets racing through her mind. Is this how it all ends?
He shook his head.
Is there anything we can do? Stop it? Create a diversion?
Arc again tightened around Mera indicating they would be next if they tried to help. One of the vampires threw one of the boys to the ground and several fed off him. The girl closest to Mera silently cried. Mera closed her eyes. She couldn’t watch this.
When Mera didn’t hear anything, she peeked. She shouldn’t have. The vampires stepped away from the boy they’d bled dry and two of them grabbed his arms. In a second they pull both arms off and threw them towards the others. Then, they grab one of the girls, and threw her to the ground. They didn’t just bleed her. They took everything from her.
Mera closed her eyes again. I want to go home. I want to go home. I want to go home. Mera kept thinking those words. Only this time, and this shocked her, she wasn’t thinking of Chicago. She pictured the castle. Her castle. Blu. Zash. Janx. Her immortals. I want how it used to be. I want that back.
Arc put his hands over her ears so she couldn’t hear the screams and shrieks. She knew she’d be able to hear them even if she survived this and lived to be a thousand. The way they laughed and pulled and tormented and took. The girl whimpered as her life slowly drained from her.
Arc pulled Mera a little when a vampire got too close. The vampire looked right at Mera. His black and red eyes stared through her. Mera thought she could hear her soul gasp as if it was trying to escape her body. It took all her strength and probably all of Arc’s to keep her from bolting. To run as fast as she could until they caught up to her.
Another of the vampires screeched something so loud Mera jumped. She was glad she wasn’t a screamer. One of the vampires yanked the rope of one of the girls over the tree branch and drug her up like he was pulling a doll. Mera closed her eyes again. She didn’t want to see her fear. She didn’t want to hear their laughter. Mera didn’t flinch as blood dripped on her. She gripped Arc tighter and buried her face into his chest hoping that would keep her from crying out.
She had to keep her mind off what was happening in front of her. Mera couldn’t scream. She couldn’t cry. She couldn’t be sick. She couldn’t help. She had to think of something else. Blu’s immortal quadruple chocolate malt with chocolate sprinkles and a chocolate straw. She went over Blu’s recipes. Several times. She memorized them all. She wanted him to test her. Her sugar faerie. She thought of Zash’s scars and the writing seared into his chest. She thought of Janx and his power.
After what seemed like an eternity, Arc let Mera go. She opened her eyes. Above her more bodies swung in the trees. She moved as far away as she could.
Arc stood in front of her. It’s okay. They’re gone.
It’s okay!
Mera motioned to the tree. What the hell is happening?
He moved closer, but Mera backed up. My Queen, I would never hurt you.
She couldn’t understand anything anymore. Why are you calling me that? I thought you wanted to end the reigns.
It’s complicated.
Mera rolled her eyes. I hated that expression in my time, and I hate it even more now. Figure it out. Use your words. Explain.
He glanced around. We’re not safe here. We need to get to Absulak.
Is that a who, a what, or a where?
He smiled. It’s a where.
He put his hand out for her. Please, my Queen.
She hesitated as she looked at his hand. Why am I still Queen if the reigns are falling? I thought you hated them? Us? Me?
Please, Mera,
he said, his voice barely louder than the wind whispering through the leaves.
She heard the pleading in his voice. She could see the fear in his eyes. I’m
