Chapter One

Christina Sergiani almost choked on her fruit juice. Slamming her glass down on the wooden table of the cafeteria, she spilled some drops on her fingers. Oh, my God! I can’t believe it’s him!

She picked up a napkin and wiped her hand while her gaze was glued to the gorgeous young man who’d just stepped out of the black Jeep parked across the street. Dressed in a pair of tight jeans and a white T-shirt stretching enticingly over mouthwatering muscles, Alexandros Zafiriou was a sight for sore eyes. Is it really him, or is it my mind playing tricks on me again?

Christina’s heartbeat broke into a gallop as Alexandros strode towards the waterfront tables where she and her best friend, Anita Conti, were sitting, enjoying—at least until a couple of seconds ago—a much-needed break after a long day at work.

All of a sudden, the idyllic surroundings of the picturesque harbor of Vathy—the capital of the Greek Island of Ithaca—seemed to disappear from view. Christina felt as if the mythical island of Homer’s hero, Odysseus, had vanished in a haze, and she was floating on the borderline between reality and illusion. It can’t be him! Stop imaging things! But then again, the vision in front of her seemed so real...

Her breath caught in her throat. He’s coming this way?! Run!

Christina was on fire—a blistering heat that even the refreshing, salty breeze of early May could not cool off.

Panicking, she glanced around. The harbor was overflowing with life. People were strolling on the waterfront or sitting at tables under the perennial trees, enjoying their refreshments. But all background chatter seemed to have faded away, and Christina could hear no other sound but the thundering of her heart.

What on earth is wrong with you? Anita asked, snapping Christina out of her trance. You look like you’ve just seen a ghost.

As a matter of fact, I have, Christina replied, picking up the menu and holding it in front of her face.

Anita watched her stunned. Are you going to tell me what’s going on? she insisted.

Lower your voice, for God’s sake, Christina urged her.

Why? Anita scanned her surroundings. Oh, my God! she cried out the moment she spotted the guy who had just turned her friend into jelly. Alexandros Zafiriou is back!

It’s him, isn’t it? I can’t be sure with the sun shining in my eyes. I might be just imagining things.

Of course, it’s him...only more muscular and far more stunning. It’s been what? Four and a half years since he left Ithaca? Anita asked, turning to face her friend.

Would you keep your voice down?

Would you stop acting ridiculous? Anita grabbed the menu Christina was holding in front of her face. "Besides, we’re outside for God’s sake. With all this commotion on the waterfront, we can’t even
