About this ebook
Too late for the California gold rush, Frederick plans on making it to the Helena gold fields in time to make his fortune. The west feels foreign to him.
He beds down in a rocky area after a day of long, hot travel on his bay mare.
Frederick wakes to find his horse stolen and Helena still many miles away. A battle with the hostile land, for his life, lies ahead of him.
An impressive historical of Montana’s gold rush era, authentic feeling, yet imaginative.

About the Author
A Hanging Offense
Frederick lay fully clothed in his bedroll, boots and all. Exhausted. The ground beneath felt rocky and his shiny new saddle made a hard pillow. But he needed to get used to roughing it.
He hadn’t built a fire. Hadn’t wanted to draw attention to himself. He didn’t know this part of the country. Wasn’t sure if it was safe to travel alone here.
It was a full moon and he could see well enough if he had to.
His rifle lay right beside him, beneath the bedroll, so no one could see its glint in the moonlight.
He wasn’t expecting company, but a man couldn’t be too careful.
He hadn’t been able to decide whether to push on to Helena or spend the night here. Since he didn’t know how far it was, he’d decided to spend the night here.
His bay mare had been tired, too. Almost too tired to eat. He’d ridden her hard in the hot sun, trying to make good time. He was in a hurry.
Rumor had it, Helena was awash with gold. That meant lots of money floating around. He needed to be there to scoop some of it up.
Wherever there was a gold rush, there were always plenty of suckers waiting to be relieved of their money. He’d heard too late about California. But Helena, in the Idaho Territory, he’d be right near the beginning of the rush. At least he hoped the rush would last a spell.
His empty belly growled and his mouth tasted sour, but he finally managed to go to sleep. Keeping an ear open for any trouble.
When he woke, the sun had just peeked over the mountaintops and into his face. He sat up. Stretched. Stood up and walked over to a tree to relieve himself.
It was then that he noticed the problem.
His horse was gone.
Nowhere to be seen.
The bridle he’d hung on a tree branch and the pretty bay mare gone. Vanished.
He’d used a halter and rope
