About this ebook

After a decade apart, childhood sweethearts reconnect by chance in New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren’s touching, romantic novel Love and Other Words…how many words will it take for them to figure out where it all went wrong?

The story of the heart can never be unwritten.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

Editor's Note

Romance trifecta…

Because this sweet story bounces between the past and present day, it felt as though I got two love stories in one. It delivered the romance trifecta: an adorable meet-cute, the totally expected unexpected plot twist, and most importantly, a second chance at a happily ever after.

First kiss, first crush, first love. I had to sleep on this book review and let my heart settle because the emotions were crushing. If you havent read this and dont want spoilers, stop reading because I have a lot to unpack with this work of art created by Christina Lauren.

"But we dont talk about falling in love with someone else and where that leaves us now, no matter how much its with us in every breath, and every word, we font talk about what happened the last time I saw him eleven years ago"
Cue a Taylor Swift soundtrack . This line alone sucked the air out of my lungs and I just stared at the page. How many of us for wherever reason had no closure from the loss of our first love? Here it was in the first chapter..how Macy felt , the bring you to your knees feeling from seeing Elliott just across the room. Chapter by chapter , we went back to when they first met, their first talk, back to present where Elliott doesnt know why she disappeared, and the wreckage Macy still feels . It is a slow motion reel.. a slow dance of pre teen crush, that developed to he was her PERSON and she was his EVERYTHING. Back to the present and his quiet presence, his strength that shows he is never leaving again.
How could they come back from eleven years? I loved these two characters, especially Elliott. His patience, how he broke up with Rachel the same night he saw Macy again. They both had really been in a holding pattern.
Macy : " I sighed, chewed my lip, fidgeted. " Why cant everyone be like you"?
Elliott: " I can be enough of your world that it feels like everyone is."
If we are lucky in this lifetime we have our Elliott. But more than not we have a relationship that ended like theirs did at 18. The cheating, the lie, the deception that really was a misunderstanding that spiraled out of control with teenage tears.
We dont get a second chance, but if we did I would grab it with both hands like Macy did, go all in, because your person only happens once. If you're lucky you will have a lifetime.
The wedding scene I had tears running down my face, and by the last third of the book I was a puddle of tears on the floor. This book was pain, unconditional love and undeniable beauty. There are not enough stars in the sky for this couple. It may remain my fave backlist romance of 2022.

Well, that was unexpected! I cried so many times through this book. Sometimes for just how purely sweet the characters are, and sometimes for the heartbreaking sadness of Macy's losses. It's been a while since a story has touched me like this one did.
