CHAPTER 1
Leave it out Paul
. Claire just about restrained herself from turning around and thumping him. She was jumpy enough as it was without him creeping up behind her and grabbing her shoulders in an exaggerated attempt at snatching her. Placing a hand across her chest, she could feel the rapid thumping of her heart, almost painful in its intensity. Why are we even here anyway, I told you it was a stupid idea
. Longing to stomp off and reiterate her point, her fear of being alone out here held her back. Relax baby
Paul pulled her into his arms and tried to reassure her that they would be ok.
Glancing upwards fearfully from the safety of his embrace, Claire shivered as the trees swayed gently in the wind. In the darkness, the rustle of leaves sounded more menacing than they should, almost whispering out a warning amongst the human like moaning of the wind as it whipped between the trunks. Darting upright as a distant sharp crack echoed ominously through the woods, she strained her ears, convinced that something or someone was after them. Fighting back tears, she gripped Paul’s arm tightly, please get us out of here
she pleaded.
She hadn’t wanted to come on this stupid adventure
in the first place, couldn’t think of anything more pointless than arranging to meet near strangers in the woods for a ghost party. Keen to impress his new mates, Paul had reassured her that it would be a laugh, that if it was too crap then they would just go home. Yeah, great laugh this was turning out to be. Losing the trail they had been following it was swallowed by heavy undergrowth, they had spent the last few hours getting more and more lost. Her panic had risen as the darkness had fallen around them, leaving them disoriented and clueless as to where they had come from. Unable to relocate the trail, they had stumbled around blindly, desperately searching for anything familiar. Refusing to take the situation seriously, Paul had joked and pratted around as she frantically searched for a way out of the increasingly frightening environment.
Screaming as another crack bounced around the forbidding tree trunks, she felt a rush of nausea as a terrible sense of foreboding overwhelmed her. Spinning around in a frenzied attempt to locate the source of the noise, a dizziness crept up on her, made her lose her footing and balance. Stumbling to the ground, her heart
