Ben D

Author that has a very long urban fantasy series in my head and pushes it out on a bi-monthly basis. With enough support from my fans I can afford to push it to a monthly series.

    Chapter 1

    Mikayka Young. Ye are banished.

Tara’s words cut through the core of her being. She can see the Scythian chief’s face and knows the answer before she asks it. But the words still manage to find their way out of her mouth, Are you serious?

    Aye.

This doesn’t make any sense! Her protest draws the attention of the other Scythians assembled at the campsite. She lowers her tone to a loud whisper, You’re the one who invited me here!

We conscripted ye. Tara points the bloodied butcher knife in her grasp at her. And ye ran away.

She closes her eyes to re-trace where everything went wrong. Yesterday she was just Mikayla Young, ordinary honor roll student at Southside High. Not that it’s much of an achievement when she is the only one on it but it was enough to get an offer from nearly every after-school club. She chose to be the Vice President of the Paranormal Percipient Club.

After spending all day being a model student it was absolute bliss to indulge in the excitement of exploring the abandoned buildings around Southside. At least until her club adventures led her to be stalked by a remorseless killing machine that turned out to be a pair of wendigos. One was dead and she wanted to stay in the city and track the second one but Dacio talked her into coming here. Who is she to question the wisdom of not only the President of the P&P club but, as she learned last night, can see into the future? Her thoughts are interuptted by the grisely sound of Tara hacking away at one of the deer carcass in the center of the camp.

The hand of Lucine, the second-in-command of the Scythians, rests on her shoulder. My dear what Tara means is that you must finish your initiation before you are allowed to stay at the camp. Her voice is a soothing British to Tara’s rather rough Irish.

    My initiation?

A wild hunt would be appropriate I believe. She calls over to Tara, Does the Chief approve?

Tara, however, does not answer as she continues to work on the carcass with relentless chops. Lucine’s hand is still on her shoulder and she guides her over to the campfire. A wild hunt it is. South of our camp is the Moss Forest. Prove your ability to hunt by capturing game there and bring it back to the camp. It should be a simple task for a girl your age.

I didn’t come here to hunt. You said you knew my grandmother and why she had this. She points to the beaded bracelet wrapped around her wrist. From it hangs a silver charm that she was raised to believe was a dreamcatcher but is actually the crest of the Scythian clan. It matched the banner that hung from the largest of the primitive houses they had set up around the camp. A shield in the shape of a Nordic double-bladed battle-axe with a horse-head in the center. The crest’s edge has been shaped to resemble feathered wings and a single arrowhead is set behind the shield.

We have a policy of not sharing our knowledge with outsiders.

She wanted to mumble under her breath how Dacio knew so much about them. But maybe she was an honorary Scythian. How can I be a conscript and not a Scythian?

You missed your initiation ceremony with the other conscripts. So you are not, technically, one of us.

She adjusts the large travelling pack on her back, Fine then I’m going home.

We also do not allow outsiders to leave without permission from the Chief. Lucine pauses, Alive anyways.

Let me guess. She looks in Tara’s direction and musters the worst Irish accent she can manage. Ye aren’t gunna give it to meh?

From behind the carcass comes Tara’s answer, The lass is smarter than she looks.

OK. But I didn’t bring any kind of gun with me. I don’t even think I’ve fired one before. She winces at the sickening sound of bone cracking under the blows of the butcher
