    Chapter 1

The downpour was so intense it thoroughly drenched Dennis Wilson in the thirty seconds it took to lift his hard-sided suitcase from the cobblestone driveway onto the sidewalk and pull it into the open-air lobby of Club Sol Cabarete.

The signs telling him to stay home began appearing almost a month ago. Three weeks prior to his departure date, Dennis discovered his long-unused passport was about to expire. He’d had to pay extra to rush his renewal through the system. The same jerk who’d harassed the flight attendant because of the late departure, and who’d nearly gotten himself strip-searched at the Puerto Plata airport after being rude to the customs officer, was now complaining to everyone in earshot that he needed to get his room first. Call up the reservation for Ash. Michael-Vincent Ash. I can’t stand around in wet clothes for hours. I have a medical condition, he bellowed at the concierge after he’d cut in front of six other guests to get to the desk.

Yeah, you have a raging case of asshole, Dennis muttered.

A pretty, honey-blonde woman relaxing on the sofa in the center of the lobby burst into laughter.

His bad mood evaporated at her contagious glee.

Ash-hole’s offended gasp set him laughing too. The pasty tourist glared at everybody in line, quelling no one’s amusement. The concierge processed him quickly, and once he was gone from the lobby, the other new
