Linnea froze at the first skittering of noise, crouching ever so slightly as her eyes scanned the nearly colorless world around her. Gray boulders covered with whitish lichen under iron-dark clouds, even the lake in the distance was a steely blue. The bird’s feathers were mottled to match, and she would never have seen him if he hadn’t decided the bit of noise her worn slippers had made as she approached was nothing to worry about and bent his head to retrieve another barnacle from the underside of a boulder.

Slowly she picked up a stone and set it in the cup of her sling. She turned her body to line up the shot, spared a quick glance at Skadhi as silent as ever beside her. Skadhi, her eyes never leaving the bird, gave a grave nod and Linnea spun the sling and hurled the stone at her prey.

And missed. Something had startled the bird just in time and it was gone now, screeching at her as it spiraled up into the always stormy sky. Linnea walked over to where it had stood. The underside of the boulder was coated in barnacles. She hated barnacles. Too much work busting them open
