I drop my duffle bag into the trunk and freeze when I notice a dark figure walking toward me up the sidewalk. My blood ices inside me as I watch his approach, a shadowy silhouette against the highlight of the harsh streetlight behind him.
My mind starts to race. Who is this guy? How long has he been there, watching me?
Glancing into the trunk and slowly lowering the lid, I urge it shut until I hear the lock snap. My eyes narrow as I watch him come closer. His gait has an odd limp, and immediately I don’t trust him. Something about him just isn’t right. Honestly, what kind of people are awake in this part of town, wandering these streets at two-thirty in the morning?
Bad kind of people, that’s who.
I glance over my shoulder and search the shadows to determine if this is some kind of ambush, but there’s no one else. A dull ache starts to burn across my lower back, and I feel myself grow increasingly nervous, palms starting to perspire in the frigid air. Come on, Dale. Ignore him. Get in the car and go.
I walk around to the driver’s side of the car and open the door as he steps off the curb and approaches me. I check behind me once more. Still no one. We’re
