AUTHORS NOTE:
IS YOUR IDEA WORTH DEVELOPING is based on another of my books How To Sell Your Idea. That book covers all sorts of topics, which deal with a variety of different aspects of idea development and sales. As you might imagine, there are many steps you must take in getting your idea to market and How To Sell Your Ideal covers most of them.
This book, Is Your Idea Worth Developing? is not designed to cover the same material. So if you really wanted a step by step guide to taking your idea to market, Is Your Idea Worth Developing? might not be as complete as you would like.
But perhaps you only want to know What is my idea worth?
Perhaps you aren't yet ready to take on protecting your idea, presenting it, or writing a contract. You simply want to know if your idea has legs
. Is it worth taking any further? That's what this book is going to do. It's the first step (and in my view the most important) in bringing your idea to market.
This book is a very practical first step because all the other steps start getting expensive and if your idea is not saleable, you can save yourself a lot of time and money by first taking a good, hard look at what your idea has going for it before plunging in. Then once you're satisfied that your idea is good enough to pursue, you can purchase a comprehensive step by step guide like How To Sell Your Idea or one of many other books on developing your idea that you can easily find.
I don't believe there are many other books like this one out there. I sure wish there would have been. I wouldn't have made as many mistakes or fallen on my face so many times while pursuing so many wild butterflies. Yes, they were mighty pretty butterflies, but in the end they turned out to be not very substantial. If I had an idea of what some of my ideas were worth before I started out, it would have saved me a lot of bumps and bruises not to mention cold, hard cash.
As you read on, remember that now is not the time to kid yourself. There is just you and your idea right now. You haven't too much invested and if it turns out that this idea isn't as terrific as you thought then admit it right away. Your idea has to be worth something to someone else or it will never go anywhere. And don't worry if you have to let this one go. You'll find that this is not the only idea you'll have and somewhere at some time you'll find a better one. On the other hand maybe you'll find out that this little idea is worth a heck of a lot more than you originally thought. Now wouldn't that be nice?
I hope this one is.

FOREWORD
Right now, I assume that all you have is an idea. Maybe you've scratched the idea down on a piece of paper or tinkered something together as a very rough prototype. Your satisfied that with some serious effort you could actually make this idea of yours into something. I wouldn't be surprised if just like lots of other inventors, you wonder if this idea might really have something special. You are really proud of it. You’re excited about the possibilities. That’s great!
But before you rush right out and start hiring people, have you ever thought, is it salable? Isn't that the really important first thing you should determine? So how do you go about doing that? What questions do you need to ask yourself about this idea that will give you an idea of the value of what you have? That's what this book is all about.
The business of developing salable ideas is best learned by doing. I'm sure you realize that most ideas are not worth the effort. It would be a lot to expect that every idea you have can make it all the way to the consumer. You will find however that if you keep trying you will get better and better at it. What's the harm? You’ve wasted some time, sure, but you also learned a lot — and you still have all the same options that you have right now. You can always hire lawyers and marketing gurus or whatever it takes to help you get your idea sold. But don’t you owe it to yourself (and to your bank account) to find out if your idea has legs
without all that expensive assistance?
As it turns out, I didn’t need a lawyer or a marketing guru to evaluate my ideas. I was able to do it myself. And after realizing that, I found a great side benefit: After I did it once, I found I could do it again and again. You can too. If you came up with one good idea, you probably have quite a few inside you. Once you learn how to evaluate your first idea, you can go back to that well of ideas inside of yourself and do it again and again..
You’re very lucky, you know. Some people can’t do what you have already done. They have great difficulty creating new ideas. If you have the unique ability to see what others don't even notice then that can be worth something. Doesn’t it make sense to put that talent to work to help not only yourself, but also your family and perhaps the entire world?
Is Your Idea Worth Developing, covers what it says: how to decide whether your idea is a good one. Good ideas are valuable, and you might be the person who has one of those ideas that will improve not only your life but also
